Kilohana Elementary School is a Project Based Learning School and we encourage learners to develop problem solving and critical thinking skills, and extend our thinking beyond the classroom. In answering the question, “How can we share our learning with our friends, families and our community?” first graders at Kilohana will share their understanding with our community in the Dispatch.

We were very thrilled about the big storm east end last week.  Our writing was focused on what we saw, what we heard and how we felt during the storm.…

Bennett Pottery Annual Show and Sale

Bennett Pottery News Release

Bennett Pottery will present its Annual Show and Sale open house from Friday, Nov. 25 to Saturday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kala’e Studio. The show will feature high-fired functional stoneware and porcelain: items made for home and garden use. The objects are durable for daily use, and are safe in the oven, dishwasher and microwave. You are invited to come and discover a wide variety of unique quality ceramics found nowhere else in Hawaii, right here on Molokai.

Dan Bennett has been creating hand crafted work on Molokai since 1974. He was a mathematics teacher at Molokai High School and UHMC Molokai, and currently teaches ceramics at the Molokai Arts Center for adults on Wednesday from 3-6 PM and Saturday, 1-4 PM.…

Kalaupapa Nonprofit Receives Award

Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa News Release

Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa was presented with a preservation award by Historic Hawaii Foundation last month for their efforts in designating January as Kalaupapa Month annually in Hawaii.

“Kalaupapa Month will be a way to bring the people of Kalaupapa back into their own history and to make sure their legacy lives on,” wrote Kiersten Faulkner, Executive Director of HHF in informing Ka ‘Ohana of the honor. “We congratulate Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa on their exemplary preservation efforts.”

It was the seventh preservation award bestowed upon by Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa by HHF in the past 10 years.…

Honoring the Molokai Cowboys

Two of Molokai’s own have been inducted into the Paniolo Hall of Fame.

Clifford Dudoit and Morrency “Porky” Dudoit were honored for a lifetime of paniolo achievement by the Hawaii Cattlemen’s Council on Nov. 19.

They joined Jimmy Duvauchelle, who had previously been the sole Molokai representative in the Hall of Fame.

The Paniolo Hall of Fame was established by the Hawaii Cattlemen’s Council in 1999 “to recognize yesterday and today’s paniolo statewide who have contributed to keeping Hawaii’s paniolo heritage alive, and honor those who made the paniolo culture legendary.”

“Molokai has a long history of cattle ranching,” said Alan Gottlieb, a representative for the Hawaii Cattlemen’s Council.…

Oct. 19 was Unity Day.  We began a focused campaign to prevent bullying and demonstrate kindness to all. In first grade, we have been learning about verbs, which we used in our writing about unity. Our prompt was, “Aloha in action creates unity.”…

U.S. History, the textbook that is given to every student in high school, states the United States of America fought for freedom for everyone. But is that true for the indigenous people of Hawaii? Oppression and exploitation of our language, culture, land and people is what we as the indigenous people of Hawaii got in the name of freedom!

Welcome Back Festivals of Aloha

Last Saturday, Festivals of Aloha returned to Molokai for the first time since 2019. Beneath a rising moon, the Molokai community shared in the momentous event.  

True to Festivals of Aloha’s mission to “honor Native Hawaiian culture and traditions from generation to generation, as well as share them with visitors and people from the community,” all residents came out in force to enjoy the night at the Mitchell Pau`ole Center. From keiki to kupuna, attendees gathered to eat shave ice, musubi, poke, teriyaki chicken and other local favorites, as well as watch entertainment, hula and royal traditions of the past and present. …
