Great Expectations

Here on Molokai, the word tourism spurs images of sprawling resorts and brash tourists that crowd the beaches of Maui and Oahu. With the goal of attracting the right kind of visitor – those who think of themselves as guests, not just tourist – Molokai Visitors Association (MVA) has produced a video in partnership with local filmmaker Matt Yamashita.

"A Visitor’s Guide to Molokai: Hawaiian by Nature" is part marketing tool, part educational film, said MVA Director Julie Bicoy. She called the video, which came out last month, a “crash-course” in life on Molokai.

“The basic concept of it was to spend a day on Molokai and move with the sun,” she said. Featured stops include Halawa Valley, Pu`u O Hoku Ranch, fishponds on the east end, Kalaupapa and the west end beaches.

Along the way, Yamashita recounts ancient Molokai history, interviews local business owners and highlights annual events like Ka Hula Piko and the channel races from Hale O Lono to Oahu. The video’s sweeping landscapes – from the North Shore cliffs to the Kamakou Preserve -- will woo visitors and impress locals alike.

Local musician Lono provides most of the soundtrack and the DVD includes four music features with original songs about Molokai. Lono said he has worked with Yamashita before and was excited to help on this project. “I love Molokai -- that’s where I’m from!”

Yamashita, who wore three hats as writer, director and producer, said the video tries to market the island responsibly and protects what makes Molokai special – the environment, culture and small population.

“We loose any one of those things and the fabric of what makes Molokai Molokai falls apart,” he said.

Yamashita owns the production company Quazifilms and typically makes cultural and education films. “This is the first time I’ve really stepped over to the commercial side,” he said.

MVA approached him last year about making the video. Bicoy said MVA was looking for ways to target “the right market” of visitors. The video is now being distributed to travel agents to show clients what Molokai has to offer.

“It’s not a typical tourist destination -- it’s not a party place or somewhere to come and be pampered,” Yamashita said.

After previewing the video back in March, Yamashita heard from some that it was too “touristy.” In response, he dialed down the sales pitch and made it more of an education in Molokai.

“It was a real challenge because we had to walk that fine line,” he said.

On Dec. 19, 2009, Ruby Villa-Nueva made a critical call that would reunite 10 family members to fulfill one purpose: to give back to the island of Molokai.

“It was a spiritual mission,” Villa-Nueva said of recently-opened Aunty Ruby’s Café on Ala Malama Avenue. “We all have a common interest in serving people. We wanted to use our different skills and bring back what was good.”

Eight of the 10 Villa brothers and sisters moved back to Molokai to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors, five of which moved back from Maui and Oahu within the last three months.

“I wasn’t going to [open a restaurant] if all 10 weren’t in,” added Villa-Nueva, co-owner of Aunty Ruby’s.

has definitely brought back the good food and feeling of the Mid Nite Inn,” Umi said. “It was family-run, too. I think people appreciate that.”

Even into the late evening hours, laughter beckons from the café doors, luring in passersby who long to join in on the celebration and consumption of delectable treats made by Royce Villa. His skills have landed him gigs all over the globe – especially for his wedding cake designs, which can be ordered through the café.

“I learned everything I know from my mom,” said Royce Villa, whose baking experience spans 15 years. “I also went to culinary school and traveled to many places where I’ve picked up on different techniques. I love making exquisite desserts with a bite.”

Within two months, the café plans to expand with a surprise addition – one that will utilize Royce’s baking talents.

Family Affair
The family connection with Ala Malama Avenue began long before Villa-Nueva became inspired to open a restaurant.

It was in 1975 that her grandparents, Julien and Louisa Torres, opened the Torres Thread Shop, occupying the same building as the café, but closed about five years later. Soon thereafter, Hop Inn, a classic Molokai eatery specializing in Chinese food, took over the building and gained local popularity throughout the heyday of pineapples. It closed some 20 years ago.

As fate would have it, the vacant rundown building, leased to the Villa `ohana by Union Leasing Corp, would become home to Aunty Ruby’s Café.

“The opportunity just opened up,” Villa-Nueva said. “It’s amazing, the timing, how it all came together.”

The Villas also have family ties with the Store House, a shop nestled alongside the café that offers wholesale goods, whose `ohana runs the establishment.

At Aunty Ruby’s, Umi said he hopes to blend all generations, leaving a Villa legacy.

“We have the first-generation mentors, but we have the second generation bringing in new, unique styles,” he said. “We want them to take their ideas and run with it.”

As for the recession that has seen the entire state littered with dead restaurants and vacant buildings? Umi said he hopes to see Aunty Ruby’s defy gravity by not only managing to survive the economic downturn, but by thriving.

“There is a recession all over but we choose not to be apart of it,” he added. “We want to bring healing to the community.”

Na Kupuna O Moana’s hula halau seem to glow as they join in a celebration of hula at Ka Hula Piko last Saturday. In its 19th year, the festival was held at Mitchell Pauole Center for the first time, a switch from its traditional Papohaku Beach location.

One event organizer said Ka Hula Piko had not seen decreased attendance at its former location at Papohaku Beach but that organizers wanted to bring it to a bigger cross section of Molokai and not just the west end.

The late kumu hula John Kaimikaua founded the annual event in 1991. “The heartbeat of our culture is dance. It is the essence of ourselves. Every movement in the universe is in our dance,” wrote Ka`imikaua.

According to a mo`olelo from the eighth century, a wahine named La`ila`i is said to have given birth to hula at Ka`ana on the hill Pu`u Nana on Molokai’s west end.

This year’s Ka Hula Piko featured both local and guest halau performances, ono grinds and a wide selection of local artists selling their crafts. The theme of the festival was “Molokai Pule O`o,” an ancient epithet spoken in praise and fear of the powerful prayer of Molokai’s kahuna (priests). Ka Hula Piko 2010 was dedicated to Aunty Louise Malulani Bush, who passed away on Feb. 10.

Tricia Allen sits with the books she’s authored spread before her, pen in hand. A lei po`o rests atop her salt and pepper hair, her fair-skinned face curving in a mild-mannered smile. A couple of tattoos peak out of her Hawaiian print shirt. But you’d never guess by looking at her that Allen is a tattooist and expert on Polynesian tattoo history and art.

“It’s a mark that identifies who you are and where you’ve been,” Allen says of tattoos.

A Kane`ohe resident, Allen visited Molokai last Saturday for a book signing at Kalele Bookstore in Kaunakakai. Her most recent book, “The Polynesian Tattoo Today,” is a compilation of 216 photos representing the work of 73 artists from around the globe. The event attracted a generous audience, from local tattoo artists to “tattoo virgins,” curious to find out more.

“I’ve wanted to meet this woman for 15 years,” said Teri Waros, owner of Kalele Bookstore and Divine Expressions.

Creative Process
While her last book, “Tattoo Traditions of Hawaii,” delves more into the history and context of tattoos in Hawaii, “The Polynesian Tattoo Today” has very little text – a sure hit on your coffee table. It beautifully highlights the artists’ work itself.

“Lots of people just want to share their art and not write about it,” she explains.

To create the book, Allen contacted many of the world’s most well-respected Polynesian tattooists she had met or heard of. She asked them to send photos of their work or contact their clients for photos. In some cases, she arranged photo shoots to capture the images. Out of 748 submissions, 216 images made the final cut. The product is a stunning presentation of the best Polynesian-style tattoos around the globe, from small pieces to art that covers much of the body. 

Allen has traveled the world studying Polynesian tattoo traditions, and combines her academic background with an organic and deeply cultural understanding of the art. She says the average time with a client before completing the tattoo is eight months. That time is spent getting to know her client and helping them design a tattoo that means something to them. Both body placement and the design itself influences the meaning of a Polynesian tattoo. Every symbol has meaning, though that meaning can be different for each individual, according to Allen.

Tattoos and Academia
Allen hasn’t always had a passion for tattoos. She was working at the Denver Art Museum, where there was a display featuring a full body tattoo.

“I used to walk by the display, thinking ‘why would anyone do that?’”

But Allen’s interest in tattoos grew – sparked, she says, by an interest in the cultural, historical and artistic aspect of Polynesian tattoo traditions. She went on to get her master’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, completing her master’s thesis on the early practice of tattooing in the Marquesas Islands.

She continued her studies, researching the revival tattooing in the Pacific Islands, including Samoa, Aotearoa, the Society Islands, the Marquesas, Rapa Nui and Hawaii. She trained to become a tattooist herself, and has now tattooed over 8,000 members of the Polynesian community.

“Now half my friends look like that guy in the case at the museum,” she laughs.

Learning the Art
Tattoos aren’t always pretty – sometimes they’re ugly, Allen admits. But they are a part of you, often marking important transitions in your life. She says the first time she held a tattoo machine, she was tattooing herself. The results weren’t necessarily pretty but proved a valuable part of her training.

She says she makes her apprentices learn the same way. One of the biggest challenges of tattooing, she explains, is using the right amount of pressure to hit certain depths of the skin tissue. The only way to learn what is too deep and what will fade is to observe that tattoo over a period of time. You can either do that by learning on yourself or learning on your dog, she laughs.

Allen has campaigned for hygienic practices around the world, and says she has seen a huge improvement in some areas. She has also worked to revise state statutes for tattoo licensing and testing for people to become a legal tattooists.

Allen talked with her audience about the challenges of tattooing, its history and revival in the Pacific Islands, its cultural and social implications today, and her own mana`o as a tattooist.

“I’m just a tool in this process – to find out what’s in your mind, put it on paper, and eventually on the skin,” Allen explained.

A young woman, living in Kalae many, many years ago, fell in love with a mysterious young man. She fell sick over her love, never eating, never sleeping. Her parents became concerned, and sought the advice of a kahuna. He told them to find out where the young man comes from, by tying a string to his malo. They followed him down to Ho`olehua, to a large outcropping of boulders.

There, they discovered a giant caterpillar, or pe`elua! The kahuna said in order to save the daughter, the caterpillar must be killed by building a fire. When the cave exploded, the large caterpillar became thousands of pe`elua – and Ho`olehua became forever known as the place of pe`elua.

Kula Kaipuni o Kualapu`u, the school’s Hawaiian immersion program, put on this original play based on a traditional Ho`olehua mo`olelo – telling Ka Mo`olelo `o Pu`u Pe`elua – the story of caterpillar hill.

Poepoe Honored for Pono Practices

Mac Poepoe is humble about his work to preserve Hawaii’s ocean resources through sustainable fishing practices. But despite the low profile he likes to keep, he just received the 2010 Ho`okahiko Award from Duke’s Waikiki for his efforts.

He was given the award at a private ceremony held at Duke’s two weeks ago, where he was presented with $4,000 from the Duke’s Legacy of Aloha fund to support Poepoe’s nonprofit on Molokai, Hui Malama o Mo`omomi.

"We value [Poepoe’s] commitment to sharing his knowledge and to keeping Hawaiian culture alive through Hui Malama o Mo'omomi and want to ensure that his efforts can continue," said Duke’s senior general manager, Ross Anderson, in a news release.

“I never like receive the award, especially when I heard there was money,” says Poepoe.  “I no like money – I like people to learn. But the idea behind it was good.”

Established in 1993, Hui Malama o Mo`omomi’s mission is to restore and maintain the health of the Mo`omomi coastline for all who live on Molokai, and to educate people so the area will be preserved for generations to come. Among its long list of activities, the organization built and maintains the pavilions at Mo`omomi, hosts hands-on educational programs and cares for the coastline area. Poepoe says Hui Malama o Mo`omomi also works closely with neighboring land managers, the Molokai Land Trust and The Nature Conservancy, to promote responsibility for both land and ocean resources.

Through the organization, Poepoe has published the Pono Fishing Calendar, an acclaimed guide to responsible fishing. The calendar teaches fishermen when not to fish, based on each species’ life cycle to ensure their renewal. Begun about 10 years ago, according to Poepoe, the calendar has been made possible in the past through both federal and private grants. He says this year, he will use the money from the Ho`okahiko Award to fund its publication.

The fishing calendar is distributed all over the state, first to people who requested it and to schools, according to Poepoe. He says this will probably be the last year of its publication, however. A lot of work goes into making sure the calendar is based on fact, he explains.

“I blazed the trail,” says Poepoe. But it’s “not an easy path to follow.”

The message Poepoe would like people to remember? “Whenever you go fishing, don’t be greedy; no take ‘em all. Leave some for the next person, and stay pono.”

The Hawaiian word "ho`okahiko" means "to cling to traditions.” The Duke’s Ho`okahiko Award was established to honor those who exemplify and pass on those traditions today. Previous recipients of the award include Nalani Kanaka`ole and Sig Zane, the Kamaka Brothers, Kaua`i Brant and Aunty Nona Beamer.

Preserving the Land: Kawaikapu Blessed

The Moloka`i Land Trust (MLT), adjacent neighbors, and guest dignitaries participated on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the Kawaikapu Preserve land blessing to launch the preserve’s future as a conservation and cultural preserve.

The blessing, conducted by Pastor Cappy Caparida,  honored Auntie Marie Place, Pookela, Molokai Laau Lapau and daughter of “Bamboo “ Davis, who is one of the oldest kupuna in the Kawaikapu-Kainalu Ahupuaa. William “Billy” Akutagawa spoke of Kawaikapu’s historical ownership and significance. Kawaikapu’s name literally translations to “the sacred waters” and is the birthplace of Chief Abner Paki, the grandson of High Chief Kamehameha Nui Ai Luau and the biological father of Bernice Pauahi Bishop. In subsequent years, the area provided homes for displaced residents of the Kalaupapa Peninsula who were forced to move because the newly created Hansen’s disease settlement. Ranching began in the 1850s and continued into the 20th century. Today the 196.4-acre Kawaikapu Preseve will be protected from future development and all historic and cultural sites will be protected and significant biological and ecological resources will be sustained for culture and future spiritual, cultural, and subsistence users.

Maui County Council Chair, Danny Mateo, spoke about the purchase of Kawaikapu, which started in 2004 and was finalized in December 2009, as an example of fortitude, commitment, and partnership among many government and community groups such as Maui County; State of Hawaii Legacy Lands Commission; State Department of Land and Natural Resources: State Historic Preservation Division; the landowner, Greg Gordon; Kawaikapu Community Advisory Committee; Ke Aupuni Lokahi, Inc; and MLT. “Tough challenges are worth it when you see the end result. Kawaikapu is the beginning of preserving and protecting the land for its people and a legacy for today and future generations,” said Mateo.

Abbey Mayer, former executive director of Ke Aupuni Lokahi, said, “Kawaikapu represents an opportunity to re-establish the extensive loi system in the watershed property, nurture the native plants used for cultural purposes, manage subsistence gathering, and protect the native forest. The work begins now for the community to re-establish a cultural and spiritual connection to the land,” said Mayer.

The mission of the Moloka`i Land Trust is to protect and restore the land, natural and cultural resources of Moloka`i, and to perpetuate the unique Native Hawaiian traditions and character of the islands for the benefit of the future generations of all Moloka`i, particularly Native Hawaiians.

Long Live `Olelo Hawai`i

The day was filled with keiki, dancing, ono food, and `olelo Hawai`i (Hawaiian language). Hundreds packed the yard of Lanikeha last Saturday, entertained by hula, Hawaiian songs, cooking demonstrations and local bands. It was Ho`omau, meaning ‘to continue,’ showcasing the Hawaiian language and culture to the community that it teaches the kids of Punana Leo o Molokai preschool.

“It’s a known fact that babies, especially two, three, four, are like sponges,” said Loke Han, director of Punana Leo. “They learn quickly and they retain a lot. If we can embed the language in them at an early age, it’s not such a chore [later].”

Different groups, from homestead associations to local crafters, joined Punana Leo in their 17th annual community celebration. The middle school had students performing songs and hula; Kula Kaiapuni Kualapu`u led their students in the Hawaiian version of the Hoki Poki, and Maui Community College handed out free sushi from their culinary program.

Lessons from the Land

First quarter our main focus was about the different types of limu that grow in Makakupa’ia in Ali’I Fishpond. Second quarter our main focus was about invertebrates (crabs). This quarter, the third, we’re focusing on vertebrates like fishes and anything that has a backbone. At the end of the quarter we create a section of our field guide. Our field guide is made up of four sections, each quarter we submit a section. Now that were at the ending of third quarter we start to wrap up our book including all data from our research.

To me I think this is the best type of learning offered at Molokai High School. The Hawaiian Immersion program is ideal for this place-based learning due to the cultural education.  To me I think out of all my four years in high school my senior year was the one that made it count learning wise. I feel that I have learned a lot through this type of learning, Mahalo to Kumu Mahina Hou and Kumu Manuwai for making this possible for our program. Although I’m graduating this summer I think Kumu Mahina Hou should continue place-based science inquiry for the next upcoming school year.

Playing Games in Naiwa

In our last episode our hero, Kalimahopu is longing for the red-hair beauty, Koa`ekea, who has been chosen to lead an evening of games during the time of Makahiki.  In the meantime she is fulfilling her role as a matchmaker choosing men and women as partners for the rest of the evening.

Koa`ekea is also looking for someone herself. She tells the master of ceremonies, Kalaeloa, that they should walk around together and when she sees the man she wants, she will give him a sign. As they approach our hero, he is standing with his mischievous friend. Since both men are handsome, Kalaeloa is not sure which one our beauty wants. He picks the wrong man. 

The metaphor used was that Kalaeloa had to “find another ship for this captain to man.”  When Kalaeloa selects the correct man, our hero, with the maile wand, Kalimahopu feels lucky she has chosen him. She in turn flings her arms around him and kisses him much to the delight of the watching crowd.

The author of the story then digresses to make a point.  He says, these were the things the ancestors did to multiply the race.  That is why the population was large until the time the Ka-haole-kaukau (white people) came.  In the times of wars many were killed and many were born.  But once the people were mostly monogamous, the race shriveled.  The story served as an illustration or explanation.

Once our beauty and hero become a couple, they had to decide where to go as dawn was on the horizon.  Being that our hero was from Kalaupapa, they go to her grandparents house close by along the road leading to Mo`omomi.  The grandparents welcomed them and began to prepare food.  When her grandmother saw the head lei of ohelo berries woven with red blossoms and green awikiwiki leaves, she remarked that her granddaughter must have been a favorite of the chiefs and is pleased.

What is interesting is how food was cooked.  Making a fire involved rubbing fire sticks and adding the sparks to wood with a few stones.  A chicken was cooked with stones in a closed gourd calabash with ananu, popolo, aheahea greens and a little water.  Poi was made from both sweet potato and pink taro poi from kaioea.  After eating the couple washed their hands and relaxed with full bellies.

While reflecting, our hero says that everything that happened the evening before went well and no one complained.  However, he is ashamed because he has no gift for her.   Our beauty answers that he has nothing to be ashamed about because he has not stolen from nor plundered the people.  They had simply to fulfill their desires in obedience to the voices of the chiefs of the land.
