MAC Show Deadline Coming Up

Friendly reminder to all members, affiliates, and students (keiki through college) of the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) that the submission deadline is approaching for the 10th annual MAC Member Show.

We are currently accepting artwork for the Show! Deadline for submission is Sunday, Aug. 15 at 5 p.m. Notifications for juried works and cash prizes will be made the week of Aug. 31. All work juried in will be exhibited online from Sept. 28 through November.

Artwork must be dropped off with an entry form at the MAC studio Aug. 8-15. Reservations for drop off required! No walk-ins, please.…

The 10th annual Molokai Arts Center (MAC) Member Show will be virtual again this year! It’s time to put the final touches on artwork created within the last three years (2019, 2020, 2021) for submission.

Artwork must be dropped off with an Entry Form at the MAC studio between Aug. 8-15. The Entry Form with drop-off instructions will be available on the website (or email molokaiartscenter@gmail.com) beginning Aug. 1. A maximum of three works may be submitted by current MAC members. Keiki Affiliates and MAC program school-age participants may also submit work for prizes.

More Art Classes Coming

Molokai Arts Center’s Saturday Youth Arts Classes have been growing and with limited space due to current safety protocols, we are adding special weekday classes!

Prior weekly sign up is required. No walk-ins due to safety protocols. Email molokaiartscenter@gmail.com for sign up instructions along with current safety protocols.

Cost is $10/class or $25 Youth Loyalty Card (good for five classes; one punch per use by individual or family). Annual Family Members ($75/year) receive a 20 percent discount. Annual Friend Members also receive a 20 percent discount on adult classes. Payment can be made on molokaiartscenter.org or in person before class starts.…

On Saturday, June 5, an indigo dye class hosted by the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) was held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at an off-site venue at the Holomua Junction. The class was an introductory class and no previous experience was required of the participants.

Indigo is a natural and ancient dye, known for its deep and rich blue color. It was used by many civilizations such as in Mayan, Egyptian, Japanese and Indian cultures. Natural indigo is obtained from a variety of plants, the most widely used one being indigofera tinctoria. But, did you know that we actually have an indigo plant species called Indigofera suffruticosa that grows in the wild here all over the island?…

Molokai Artists Encouraged to Enter Statewide Exhibition

Held annually since 1967, the Hawaii Craftsmen Annual Statewide Exhibition of traditional and contemporary crafts brings a juror of international reputation to the state of Hawaii to jury entries and give public presentations on each island. Accepted artwork will be exhibited at the Downtown Art Center in Honolulu, and will be featured in an exhibition catalog.

Emerging and established artists from across the state of Hawaii are encouraged to submit up to six completed artworks to be juried by Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy, a Los Angeles and New York-based curator, writer, and arts administrator of contemporary art and craft, and an assistant curator at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), New York.…

Free MAC Classes Memorialize Two Artists

The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) has been awarded grants from Maui County Office of Economic Development and Atherton Foundation. These grants, along with generous donations and recent fundraisers, allow Molokai’s only nonprofit arts education organization to offer three months (April, May, June) of free ceramic and mixed media arts classes for children, youth, adults, and seniors. The project, titled Panaʻi Aloha — Giving Back to Molokai, is the MAC’s way of celebrating its 10-year history and helping its island home cope with and revitalize during the ongoing pandemic. Mahalo for Soup ‘R Bowl Support

The Molokai Arts Center held its 11th annual Soup ‘R Bowl on March 6. Themed “Reimagined,” the fundraiser event featured 492 soup bowls and mugs created by Molokai artists. MAC reimagined the usual sunset under the banyan tree dinner fundraiser and created a COVID-compliant walk-through, take-out experience that was enjoyed by all.

Mahalo Molokai for supporting Molokai’s only nonprofit arts education program. Yes, the Molokai Arts Center is still having its 11th annual Soup ‘R Bowl, but the event has been reimagined! It will be held on Saturday, March 6, at the Lanikeha Community Center in Ho’olehua (2200 Farrington Ave). Tickets will only be sold online this year. Visit molokaiartscenter.org today to order.

Due to current COVID protocols, the Molokai Arts Center’s 2021 fundraiser will be more streamlined with the same featured ceramic Soup ’R bowls made by Molokai artists. Instead of a sit-down dinner, the event will be a walk-through, take-out event. A highlight will be a “Meet the Artist” hour for premium ticket holders. The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) Member Art Show 2020 showcased Molokai’s keiki artists. Two keiki classes are held every Saturday: Session 1 from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. and Session 2 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The MAC also hosts classes for Molokai Middle School (HLIP and Dolphins), Kualapu’u School 21st Century Program, Aka’ula Summer Session and other workshops as requested by agencies and schools. Congratulations to our young artists who submitted and won awards!
