These past 20 months have been quite subdued at the Molokai Arts Center, but we’re looking forward to an exciting, art-filled 2022!

Our Artist in Residence program will be back on track with our first artist arriving in January. The MAC AIR program offers artists the perfect backdrop to create, explore, and experience a unique culture. 2022 will bring an established movie/TV scriptwriter, an Oceanic wood sculptor, a world-renown conductor/concert pianist, and a Kanaka Maoli musician.

The Performing Arts component will grow in 2022, beginning with ukulele classes and theatre workshops in addition to presentations by our AIR musicians.…

Bennett Pottery is hosting an open studio sale at its Kala’e location from Nov. 15 to Dec. 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily.  Call (808) 567 6585 early for a viewing appointment to have the best selection.  Please wear a mask.

Dan Bennett, Molokai potter, has created a number of pieces suitable for use in the home, including mugs, bowls, plates and platters, tea pots and cups, planters, sponge holders, salt jars and storage containers, just to name a few. All work is made of high fire stoneware or porcelain and is suitable for daily use.…

Award-Winning ‘Mock Chicken’

This work of art, crafted by Molokai artist Misty Mollena, is titled “Mock Chicken” and created from chicken feathers and cotton fabric. It won Best in Show during the Molokai Art Center’s annual Member Show, earning Mollena a $300 prize. Show juror Kat Kazlauskas praised the piece for its “incredible attention to detail in its execution as well as an innovative approach to cultural references.” To read more about this piece and other award-winning entries in the Member Show, click here.

Kudos to all the Molokai artists who entered the 10th annual Molokai Arts Center (MAC) Member Show. Due to gathering restrictions, awards were announced via Zoom. The Member Show is online and can be found on the MAC website molokaiartscenter.org/2021-member-show/.

While all the art work was exceptional, not all submissions were juried in. Our juror, artist Kat Kazlauskas, graciously shared thoughts about each piece juried in on the MAC blog molokaiartscenter.org/2021/10/03/some-notes-from-our-juror-kat-kazlauskas/. Read her notes alongside the photos. Some of the works are offered for sale where a price is listed. Otherwise, you will see NFS=Not for Sale.

Congratulations to this year’s prize winners. Best in 2-D ($100) “ʻIʻiwi Bird” was won by Nan Walters.…

Malama Maui Nui is excited to announce that submissions are now being accepted for The Art of Trash and Trashion Show slated to open in April 2022 at MMNui.org/ArtOfTrash! If you haven’t already done so, start creating now! Submissions close Feb. 1, 2022.

The Art of Trash Exhibition and Trashion Show are annual, juried events that inspire community members to reimagine our resources, such as previously used materials, as elements for creative inspiration. All pieces are original work made from recycled and/or reused material. 

Residents of Molokai, along with Maui and Lanai, are invited to create art pieces for the Exhibition and/or fashion pieces for the Trashion Show.…

Molokai Art on Display at Statewide Exhibit

Hawaii Craftsmen News Release 

Twelve Molokai artists entered a total of 48 entries into the Hawaii Craftsmen 2021 Annual State Exhibition. Of the 48 entries, nine works were accepted. This year, the competition was very stiff as there were a total of 551 entries statewide, submitted by 195 artists, and of the 551 entries, only 20 percent of the works, or 122 pieces, could be juried in.

The Molokai Artists whose works were juried in are: Kim Markham (three pieces were accepted), Patti Golebieski (one), Carol Rocha (one), Dan Bennett (two), Arabella Ark (one), and Terry Klerlein who collaborated with Kim Markham (one).…

MAC Show Deadline Coming Up

Friendly reminder to all members, affiliates, and students (keiki through college) of the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) that the submission deadline is approaching for the 10th annual MAC Member Show.

We are currently accepting artwork for the Show! Deadline for submission is Sunday, Aug. 15 at 5 p.m. Notifications for juried works and cash prizes will be made the week of Aug. 31. All work juried in will be exhibited online from Sept. 28 through November.

Artwork must be dropped off with an entry form at the MAC studio Aug. 8-15. Reservations for drop off required! No walk-ins, please.…

The 10th annual Molokai Arts Center (MAC) Member Show will be virtual again this year! It’s time to put the final touches on artwork created within the last three years (2019, 2020, 2021) for submission.

Artwork must be dropped off with an Entry Form at the MAC studio between Aug. 8-15. The Entry Form with drop-off instructions will be available on the website (or email molokaiartscenter@gmail.com) beginning Aug. 1. A maximum of three works may be submitted by current MAC members. Keiki Affiliates and MAC program school-age participants may also submit work for prizes.

Molokai Arts Center’s Saturday Youth Arts Classes have been growing and with limited space due to current safety protocols, we are adding special weekday classes!

Prior weekly sign up is required. No walk-ins due to safety protocols. Email molokaiartscenter@gmail.com for sign up instructions along with current safety protocols.

Cost is $10/class or $25 Youth Loyalty Card (good for five classes; one punch per use by individual or family). Annual Family Members ($75/year) receive a 20 percent discount. Annual Friend Members also receive a 20 percent discount on adult classes. Payment can be made on molokaiartscenter.org or in person before class starts.…

On Saturday, June 5, an indigo dye class hosted by the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) was held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at an off-site venue at the Holomua Junction. The class was an introductory class and no previous experience was required of the participants.

Indigo is a natural and ancient dye, known for its deep and rich blue color. It was used by many civilizations such as in Mayan, Egyptian, Japanese and Indian cultures. Natural indigo is obtained from a variety of plants, the most widely used one being indigofera tinctoria. But, did you know that we actually have an indigo plant species called Indigofera suffruticosa that grows in the wild here all over the island?…
