Two-Day Pottery Workshop

Molokai Arts Center (MAC) will be presenting a two-day Japanese Throwing and Slip Inlay Workshop featuring international artists from Denmark, Gregory Miller and Janne Hieck. During the workshop on Saturday Feb. 23 and 24, they will be demonstrating European and Japanese techniques for throwing on the wheel, such as “throwing on the hump,” as well as ways to modify , alter, and add to basic wheel thrown forms.

On the second day of the workshop, the artists will demonstrate various ways to decorate with slip and inlay for salt glazing. Class participants will have an opportunity to fire their pieces with Gregory and Janne the following weekend, March 1 and 2.…

The Friends of the Molokai Public Library is pleased to present a reading by acclaimed poet Ariana Nash on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 6 p.m. at the Molokai Library. Ariana will read poems from her just-released book “Instructions for Preparing Your Skin” which won the 2011 Philip Levine Prize in Poetry. She is also a recipient of a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Prize and a MacDowell Colony Residency.

Ariana’s poems are precise and frank, measured and uncompromising. She has the ability to illuminate the intimacies of human connections, and while doing so, she demonstrates an eye for textures, spaces, and metaphoric images.…

Arts Center Pot and Plant Sale

The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) will be having an open house and Pot and Plant sale at the Arts Center located in Kualapu`u, behind Coffees of Hawaii, on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. After nearly one year in this location, the artists are all excited to share their space and talents with the island.

Everyone has been busy creating planters for the sale, which is a fundraiser for the center. There are pots of all sizes, some with plants, and some without. In addition, other items will be offered for sale including bird baths, ceramic plant tags, garden luminaries, bird houses and even gift memberships for that hard to buy for person on your Christmas list.…

Molokai Arts Center First Annual Art Show

Creating works of art from all types of media including pottery and jewelry, the artists at Molokai Arts Center (MAC) have been busy since the Center’s opening in March. Now everyone is excited as they choose one or two of their favorite pieces to display in the First Annual MAC Art Show to be held from Nov. 4 through 16 at the Molokai Public Library and continuing in the Ike Lihi Gallery the Molokai Arts Center until December 8.

The Molokai community will have an opportunity to view a small sample of the original and creative work completed over the first full year of operation of the MAC by many of the volunteer artists that have helped to make it a success.…

Festivals Flourish with Aloha

Whether it’s the coronation of the royal court, the procession of pa`u units riding atop lei-draped horses through town or the chaotic teamwork of the bed race, the annual Festivals of Aloha is all about pride, color and tradition. Every year, the three-day event draws large crowds to participate in fun activities that also perpetuate traditional Hawaiian culture. The theme of this year’s Festival was “E kupuohi I ke Aloha –- Flourish with Aloha,” as symbolized by the Kamehameha butterfly, one of two butterfly species native to Hawaii.

“The point of the festivals is to carry on the heritage of Hawaiians,” said Moana Dudoit, who has been organizing the festivals on Molokai with her sister Raquel Dudoit for the past three years.…

Art at Aka`ula

As the sun set slowly over the hills of Kalae on Friday, students, teachers, families and friends gathered to enjoy Aka`ula School’s “Celebrating the Arts” exhibit. The annual exhibit, which first started in 2006, features the works of Aka`ula students and some family members who donate their art to raise funds for the school.

“It really is about getting [the students’] artwork out into the community,” said Dara Lukonen, one of the school’s founding teachers. “New students have been very surprised and awed when they see their work displayed –sometimes it is as simple as putting a mat on it and lighting.”…

Media is a means of communication. The exciting thing about media in the 21st century is that it is the hands of the beholder, as opposed to being transmitted by few to the masses, as is the case with traditional news, television and radio. This is especially important for today’s tech savvy youth, and on Molokai, the Molokai Art and Media Academy is guiding youth to analyze, evaluate and yes, create their own media.

From Oct. 1 to 5, the organization is holding a Media Literacy Academy for youth ages 13 to 18 during the fall school intersession.…

Painting a Retrospective

Molokai Artist Miyako Yamazaki’s work on display at Arts Center

Contemporary artist Miyako Yamazaki has had her fair share of success as an artist. She has worked as a fashion illustrator for companies like Christian Dior and Barneys New York, designed packaging for Japan Airlines, been featured in prominent galleries in Tokyo, and is a published author of two books. However, she said her aspirations in life were never to be widely rich or successful. Instead, what she truly wished to do was to “paint like a child.” This childlike spirit shines through in her vibrant animal canvas art, which captures the innocence and joy of nature, inviting viewers to reconnect with their own sense of wonder.…

“Miyako Yamazaki, 1987 – 2012 — A Retrospective” will be on display in the ‘Ike Lihi Gallery at the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) from Sept. 21 to Oct. 21. An opening and birthday celebration will be held on Sept. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Miyako is a Contemporary Artist from Tokyo, who has been living on Molokai since 2004. She has worked in oil, acrylic, video and photography, as well as publishing two books; LOVE SPEAKS, 1999, Kourinsya, Kyoto, Japan, Out of Print, and Gift from Molokai, 2007, Sangyo-hensyu Center, Tokyo, Japan, and one DVD, Heavenly Brights, 2001, now on media, Tokyo, Japan.…
