Noted artist and author, Mr. Hooper Dunbar, will speak on Tuesday, May 31 at 5:30 p.m. at Kalele Bookstore in Kaunakakai.

His topic is the title of his book, “Forces of Our Time: The Dynamics of Light and Darkness,” which addresses the many forces at play in the age in which we live and how spirit manifests itself in the realm of matter as capacity is developed.

Dunbar’s artistic works have been featured in shows by the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the National Academy of Arts in Shanghai and at the United Nations in New York City, among others.…

Annual Pottery Show and Sale

Bennett Pottery will present its Annual Show and Sale on Saturday, Nov. 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kala`e Studio. The show will feature high-fired utilitarian stoneware and porcelain ware — items made for home and garden use. The objects are durable for daily use, and are safe for use in the oven, dishwasher and microwave. You are invited to come and see a wide array of unique, quality ceramics found nowhere else in Hawaii, right here on Molokai.

Dan Bennett has been creating unique hand crafted work on Molokai since 1974. He is a past mathematics teacher at Molokai High School and University of Hawaii, Maui College (UHMC) Molokai, and currently teaches ceramics at the Molokai Arts Center for adults, and classes for credit through UHMC.…

3rd Annual Art Show

Molokai Arts Center (MAC) will present its third annual member show Nov. 18 through Dec. 9. Hosted at the Molokai Public Library, there will be an opening reception from 5 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 18.

This year’s entries include art work from members, as well as volunteers, students from UHMC classes, the kupuna class and a group project from the keiki class.

Some works will be available for sale at the opening reception with a portion of the proceeds going to the Friends of the Library. Refreshments will be provided at the opening reception. The public is encouraged to come and enjoy the unique handcrafted art work created by members of the Molokai community.…

Filming Nonprofit Holds Logo Contest

Ke Ala Pono (The Righteous Path) is a local nonprofit that is that provides film and editing experiences for community members that are interested. We would like announce a contest for the creation of our logo. The contest is open to all ages and will run through the month of November.

Ke Ala Pono is looking for a design that can be displayed on our mobile trailer, films and paperwork. All submitted logos will become the property of our organization. Our mission is “to preserve the culture, heritage and natural resources of the island of Molokai and the State of Hawaii through advocacy, outreach and education by providing programs that benefit all sectors of the community.”…

12 Molokai Businesses at County Product Show

At this year’s second annual Made in Maui County Festival, we have 12 booths occupied by Molokai businesses. The Kuha`o Business Center (KBC) is excited to not only have businesses returning to the festival from last year, but to be adding to the list of Molokai businesses that will be represented. The festival takes place Nov. 6-7 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului.

The event will boast a larger format with more products, more vendors, more food trucks, and more reasons to buy local. Nearly 140 product vendors and food trucks are confirmed for this year.…

Alii’s Life Story Through Hula

When Kumu Hula Micah Kamohoali`i and his halau started gathering stories about Kamehameha the Great, they simply wanted to save their Hawaii Island community’s history before it was lost.

Now, what began as a cultural revival has been channeled into a hula drama called “Hanau Ke Ali`i: Born is the Chief,” which combines hula, chant and Hawaiian martial arts to reenact lesser known details of Kamehameha’s life. After performing on six islands, Waimea-based Halau Na Kipu`upu`u is completing its tour on Molokai this Friday at the high school gym.

Ariana Nadia Nash and Brandon W. Jones will be reading from their works in progress at Kalele Bookstore on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. in a lively literary event cosponsored by Kalele Bookstore and the Molokai Arts Center (MAC).

Wine and the written word have gone hand in hand since before the time of Euripides, so bring a bottle of wine and/or a pupu dish to share and come lift a glass to the literary tradition.  Ariana will be reading new works of poetry and Brandon will be reading one of his short stories, with time at the end to ask them questions about their work. …

Island Foundation Logo Winner

Congratulations to Michael Onofrio, winner of the Molokai Island Foundation’s (MIF) logo contest.  Michael was presented with a $200 check for his winning design, which depicts a gourd, a vine that reaches out and bears a hard shell fruit used as an implement (ipu) adorned with kukui nuts and leaves. This exemplifies the foundation’s purpose: to reach out into the community, to serve and support its needs.

Michael graduated from Molokai High School in 2013 and is about to begin his junior year at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, where he majors in graphic design.…

Arts Center Poetry Workshop

The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) is excited to present “An Introduction to Poetry,” a two-day creative writing workshop taught by award-winning poet Ariana Nadia Nash.  The two-part course will take place on consecutive Saturdays, July 25 and Aug. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at a private residence in Kawela Plantation.  The cost will be $55 for the general public and $44 for MAC members.  The workshop enrollment fee includes catered lunches both days by Roshani Nash.

The course is intended to be a fun, no-pressure introduction to the basics of modern poetry. In the first class, students will learn fundamentals of craft, both as readers and writers, and in the second class, students will try their hands at writing poetry.…
