Hawaii Craftsmen Exhibition Still On

Hawaii Craftsmen is still planning to hold its annual statewide exhibition and is doing everything they can to make sure that it will be a successful and safe experience for all of Hawaii’s artists. Hawaii Craftsmen has developed contingency plans that take into account different levels of social distancing and travel restrictions. As it gets closer to the exhibition date, some adjustments may need to happen, so please keep that in mind, keep an eye out for any email announcements, and check the prospectus page on the website for updates.

At this point, one thing that is certain is that the statewide jurying will be an all digital review, so be sure to take stellar images of your entries.…

Art Show Postponed

In light of new COVID rules, the 2020 Molokai Arts Center Member Art (MAC) Show has been postponed until the fall. We will not collect art work between Aug. 14-28 as originally planned.

The new dates will be posted soon on our Facebook page and sent via our e-newsletter. Like our page and visit our website molokaiartscenter.org to be added to our mailing list.

Arts Center Celebrates 10 Years

On Aug. 6, 2010, Molokai Arts Center, Inc. was established as a nonprofit organization in the state of Hawaii. Ten years later, in the midst of COVID-19, the MAC, as it is affectionately known, continues to grow despite its current limited capacity.

In 2005, master potter Dan Bennett transformed his two-car garage into a studio. He invited a small group of Molokai artists to share his space and equipment. Dan taught, guided, and encouraged this growing group of potters and sculptors.

Five years later, over 20 eager artists were creating and collaborating. Dan’s modest space was bursting at the seams.…

Save the Arts Center

Government mandates to close schools and stay at home closed our doors over a month ago. The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) has had no income for our basic expenses such as rent, utilities, and staffing to keep our nonprofit going. Our income from keiki classes, workshops, studio memberships, Alu Like Kupuna Program, Molokai Middle School Hawaiian Language Immersion Program, UPLINK, Kualapu’u School 21st Century Program, adult classes, and Maui Community College classes came to a complete halt. Concern is growing as COVID-19 continues to shape the way we operate.

Honolulu Magazine, in conjunction with the Hawaii Community Foundation, has repurposed Give Big Hawaii into The Aloha Campaign platform to assist in raising critical funds for nonprofits in Hawaii during this time of exceptional need.…

Tapping Into Tradition

The rhythm of tapping, like a heartbeat, filled Kulana ‘Oiwi Halau last Tuesday night. It was the sound of a traditional tattoo, or uhi, coming to life — in what might have been the first time on Molokai in more than a century.

Residents gathered around in the dim evening light to watch as cultural practitioner Keli’i Makua brought forth a new uhi before their eyes. Makua studied under renowned Hawaiian tatau artist Keone Nunes, who revived the practice in Hawaii as it was on the verge of extinction. In 2016, Makua went through a historic ceremony in which he became a Kahuna Ka Uhi, or priest of tattooing — the first to receive this honor in Hawaii in more than 200 years.…

Kealopiko Shirt Supports Kualapu`u Immersion Students

Each morning, students at Kualapu`u School start the day by joining together in chanting a Hawaiian `oli. The third line of the `oli — “Aia i hea ka `uala Lanikeha e wili ai ka lei kalina” — talks about the Lanikeha varity of uala, or sweet potato, from Ho`olehua. This line will soon have special significance and visual representation on a shirt that will both celebrate February as Hawaiian Language Month and raise money to support Hawaiian language learning at Kualapu`u School.

The T-shirt is the result of a collaboration between Hui Makua, the parent organization of Ke Kula Kaiapuni `o Kualapu`u Hawaiian Immersion program at Kualapu`u, and popular local clothing company Kealopiko.…

Forces of Our Time Talk

Noted artist and author, Mr. Hooper Dunbar, will speak on Tuesday, May 31 at 5:30 p.m. at Kalele Bookstore in Kaunakakai.

His topic is the title of his book, “Forces of Our Time: The Dynamics of Light and Darkness,” which addresses the many forces at play in the age in which we live and how spirit manifests itself in the realm of matter as capacity is developed.

Dunbar’s artistic works have been featured in shows by the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the National Academy of Arts in Shanghai and at the United Nations in New York City, among others.…
