Molokai Celebrates Inaugural George Helm Jr. Day

By Jack Kiyonaga, Reporter

“George Helm, Jr. is known as one of Hawaii’s greatest Aloha ‘Aina heroes, setting in motion a movement of consciousness for generations,” reads a recent Maui County proclamation that declared March 23, 2023 to be George Helm, Jr. Day throughout Maui County.

Helm is best known for his activism, leadership and music. Part of the “Kaho’olawe Nine” along with prominent figures like Walter Ritte and Dr. Emmett Aluli, Helm helped spearhead the movement protesting the U.S. Navy’s bombing of Kaho’olawe. On March 7, 1977, amid a rescue effort on Kaho’olawe, Helm and Maui’s Kimu Mitchell disappeared at sea.…

Mayor Bissen Heard Mokulele Concerns

Wednesday, March 29th, 2023

By Jack Kiyonaga, Reporter

Molokai residents took the opportunity to air their many flight grievances and address overwhelming frustration with unreliable and expensive flights on Mokulele Airlines two weeks ago when Mayor Richard Bissen made a two-day visit to Molokai.

A talk story event at the Mitchell Pauole Center constituted the mayor’s first stop on his Holomua Kakou initiative, with the goal of visiting towns around Maui County.

The purpose of the trip was to run the County of Maui out of Molokai for two days, as well as field questions from Molokai residents in a communal talk story gathering.

While reminding the Molokai community that the County government does not have input on private airlines like Mokulele, Bissen called Keith Sisson, Chief of Staff at Mokulele’s parent company Southern Airways, to have a conversation with Molokai residents. …

Molokai Robotics: A Legacy of Learning

By Catherine Cluett Pactol | Editor

Preparing for their regional competition on Oahu, Molokai High School robotics students spent their spring break practicing the delicate art of maneuvering blocks onto three levels using a robot they designed, built and programmed over the past several months. In the competition, they form alliances with teams from around the world, with a dozen other students and their robots all competing to perform the same tasks on a basketball-court-sized competition field. It’s a high-tech, high-pressure activity that costs thousands of dollars just to enter.

But in their tiny workshop set up on Molokai High cafeteria’s stage area, students use the tools they have. …

Wins for Volleyball and Baseball

The Molokai High Baseball and Boys Volleyball teams had a weekend of wins last Friday and Saturday.

The Volleyball team hosted Seabury at The Barn, winning 3-0 in three sets last Friday, when they also celebrated the team’s seniors with a home crowd. On Saturday, the Farmers won 3-2. The boys are off to a strong 4-0 start to their season.

Baseball also played Seabury, on Maui. Friday’s game closed 11-0 in a three-inning mercy rule. On Saturday, Seabury rebounded but the Farmers still brought home a win with a 10-8 game. The team now increased their season winning streak to 6-0.…

Paka’a Lanakila Comes to Molokai

By Jack Kiyonaga, Reporter

Molokai residents were treated to a multisensory art experience last week that blended classical music with Hawaiian legend.

Composed by Dr. Jon Magnussen, this performance of the Paka’a Lanakila story featured chamber music by the Spring Wind Quintet, part of Chamber Music Hawaii, as well as storytelling by Kalama Cabigon.  The performance combined chamber music with Hawaiian language storytelling and visual art effects to create an experiential form of storytelling.

“It’s meant to be a theater piece that envelopes everybody,” explained Magnussen. “Multiple elements are telling the story. They all work together in a way that makes it much greater than it ever could be with just one of them.”…

Resident Raises Awareness for Early Cancer Screenings

Wednesday, March 29th, 2023

UH Cancer Center News Release

Molokai resident Nancy Swartz noticed redness and a lump on her right breast. Having breast cancer in her family and a husband with prostate cancer, Swartz took these symptoms seriously. If your husband is also dealing with prostate cancer, I recommend you to find out here a great supplement that can offer many health benefits.

To continue, she consulted her primary care physician who found her symptoms to be consistent with Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC). IBC is a rare form of breast cancer that gets its name from symptoms appearing swollen and red, or inflamed. IBC can present different symptoms than other types of breast cancer, such as rapid change in breast size or shape, redness or rash on the breast or nipple, pain or tenderness in the breast, nipple retraction or discharge, and enlarged lymph nodes under the arm or collarbone.…

By Sara Jane Larkin, Teacher

In Kilohana School’s first grade class, one of our students had a loss of a family pet and he was grieving. I took the opportunity to talk a little bit about loss and grief with them. At the end of our conversation, I asked them to think of an animal or a person or even an experience where they had grief or loss, to close their eyes until they had a memory in their heart that made them smile when they thought about it. And this beautiful poem is the result, a composite written by all my students and myself. …

Vandalism at the Library

Wednesday, March 29th, 2023

Our historic Molokai Public Library, built in 1937, is a wahi pana and pu’uhonua for our island. It is truly a hale, hosting guests and making people feel at home. We have all come to enjoy the cool comfort of its interior, an escape from the fierce Kaunakakai heat, the free WiFi provided both inside and out, the helpful staff who go above and beyond for our community members, and the plethora of information, community programming and valuable resources housed within.

The Library’s lawn has hosted many special events and is home to the distinct “Pule Oʻo” copper sculpture by Bumpei Akaji, Nisei Veteran, installed in 1973.…

Mahalo, Misaki’s

Wednesday, March 29th, 2023

Thank God for Kevin Misaki and all of the wonderful people that work at Misaki’s to bring the people of Molokai food to nourish their bodies and minds. The very trying times that COVID has had on the people of Molokai have deepened our appreciation of those working at Misaki’s who have given so very much, often putting others above their own safety. Through endless weeks, months and years, Kevin and his employees persevered and gave endless hours of their time, energy, kindness, politeness and helpfulness to the people of Molokai. Upon entering Misaki’s grocery store from now on, I plan on shouting, “Thank God for Kevin Masaki.” …
