A new county program seeks to support small businesses on Molokai, Lanai and Maui this holiday season. The County of Maui Office of Economic Development is launching the Maui Nui First “Season of Giving” campaign, aimed at promoting small businesses across Maui Nui during the upcoming holiday season. The campaign invites local entrepreneurs to submit their holiday specials, distinctive products or service information, and inspiring stories for consideration on the Maui Nui First website and social media platforms. There is no cost to participate. Small businesses can also benefit from using a Free AI video generator to create eye-catching promotional videos that help showcase their products and connect with more customers online during the holiday shopping season.…

Health Insurance Open Enrollment

Hawaii Dept. of Commerce and Consumer Affairs News Release

The state of Hawaii Dept. of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Insurance Division is encouraging residents who do not have health insurance coverage through their employer to visit HealthCare.gov to compare plans. Open enrollment via the Health Insurance Marketplace lasts through Jan. 15, 2025. Consumers who enroll by Dec. 15, 2024, can secure coverage that starts January 1, 2025.

People who already have a Health Insurance Marketplace individual plan can update or upgrade their health plans during this period. Over 20,000 Hawaii residents purchased plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace in 2024, and more than 17,000 received subsidies.…

Pest Alert, Coqui Frog

Eleutherodactylus coqui, commonly known as the coqui frog, is a small tree frog slightly larger than 2.5 centimeters, or 1 inch, long, with colors varying from light yellow to dark brown. It has a round body shape and a broad rounded snout with obvious toe pads. They also make a distinctive “ko-kee” vocalization that can be easily heard. They are native to Puerto Rico.

Since the discovery of coqui frogs on Hawaii Island in the late 1980s, they have made it to all major islands including Maui, Oahu and Kauai.

MoMISC has intercepted and controlled one immature and seven mature coqui frogs that arrived on Molokai since 2001, preventing the establishment of this species on island. …

Making Art Out of Your Own Backyard

Several Molokai artists put their talents to use teaching residents how to create artful arrangements out of the plants growing in their own backyards. Kala’e Tangonan, Scarlett Ritte and Mokihana Paleka led workshops at the Molokai Land Trust on Nov. 2 geared towards making fun, homemade gifts for the upcoming holidays.

Using koa, pohinahina, eucalyptus, ironwood pines and more, attendees were led through holiday designs, bouquets, and crafts like keychains. The two-hour workshop was accompanied by a plant giveaway from the Molokai Land Trust.…

Veterans Day 2024

This year’s Veterans Day was marked by the Molokai Veterans Caring For Veterans celebration at Memorial Park in Kaunakakai. Attended by State Sen. Lynn DeCoite, as well as staff from U.S. Sen. Maize Hirono’s office, the ceremony honored the Molokai men and women who have served their nation. In particular, this year was dedicated to the 442nd Regimental Combat team, which had various volunteers from Molokai’s Nisei, or second-generation Japanese American, population.

One of the celebration’s keynote speakers, John Wa’a Nahoopii from Molokai, honored the late founder of Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans, Larry Helm, with a portrait that he had created featuring Helm’s military medals.…

National Arts Prize Winner Credits Molokai Roots 

One of the most prestigious awards for the arts, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, was recently awarded to Vicky Holt Takamine of Oahu, for her work as a kumu hula and executive director of the PA’I Foundation. With the prize, which includes a cash amount of $450,000, Takamine joins the likes of Robert Redford, Bob Dylan, Spike Lee and more. 

 

While she lives and works over on Oahu, Holt Takamine explained that it was time spent on Molokai as a girl during which she was first exposed to many of the Hawaiian cultural arts she champions today. 

 

Holt Takamine’s family would spend their summers with the Place ‘ohana on Molokai’s east end.…

Prince Kuhio Play Brings History to Life 

As part of the Hawaii Pono’i Coalition, a play honoring the late Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole Pi’ikoi came to Molokai for a special performance at Kulana ‘Oiwi. In collaboration with the Ho’olehua Homesteaders Association, the play sought to educate audiences on the biography and character of one of Hawaii’s most famous leaders. 

 

Written by Victoria Nalani Kneubuhl and directed by Sammie Choy, the play covers the life of Prince Kuhio. Starting with his early years in Hawaii and adoption by his aunt and uncle Queen Kapi’olani and King Kalakaua, the play follows Kuhio’s journey throughout the turbulent years of the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii, subsequent rebellion, imprisonment, and eventual career as Hawaii’s delegate to the U.S.…

In an effort to expand Alzheimer’s and dementia research in native communities, Justina Tavana and her team of researchers from Brigham Young University’s Natives Engaged in Alzheimer’s Research program brought the Brain Train study to Molokai on Nov. 1 and 2. Funded by the National Institute on Aging, this initiative aims to develop culturally tailored research and treatments for Alzheimer’s and dementia specifically for American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations. The event on Molokai offered local residents an opportunity to learn about Alzheimerʻs and dementia research and to participate in a brain health screening. This milestone event highlighted the importance of this research, especially in underserved communities, and the need for awareness, early detection, and culture specific interventions for prevention and care.…

Joseph Sotero Manaba

Joseph “Joe” Sotero Manaba was born to Sotero and Marie Manaba on March 19, 1941 at Shingle’s Memorial Hospital in Ho’olehua, Molokai. On the morning of October 10, 2024, after fulfilling a beautiful 83 years of life, Joe left his Earthly home in Kamiloloa, to be welcomed into his new eternal home with God.

Joe is survived by his wife Dolores “Dodie” Manaba; children, Tania Manaba, Desmund (Christy) Manaba, Tertia Keliiholokai, Dedric (Jersula) Manaba, Deidre Manaba, and Jordan “Koa” (Rebecca) Manaba; 18 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and his sister, Paulette Kortekaas. Joe was preceded in death by his brother Randolph “Randy” Manaba, and his sister, Mildred “Millie” Hayes.…

November and December Golf Aces

Rodney Reyes and Scott Hemenway are the November and December Aces for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club.
Two aces are handed out in November to make the 12 participants for the Ace of Aces Club Championship on Dec. 7 at Iconic Ironwood Hills Golf Course. The winner will be president of the club for the next calendar year.

Hot Rod Reyes, Molokai professional golfer and all-around good guy, shot 44-42 for a gross total of 86. With his 16 handicap, his 70 net got him the November Ace.

Mr. Scottie Too Hottie Hemenway is a retired Molokai Middle School science teacher and one of the icons of the sport at iconic Ironwood Hills.…
