Yacht to Continue Molokai Visits, For Now

Monday, January 9th, 2012

American Safari Cruises (ASC) is resuming scheduled two-day stops to Molokai later this month after company officials, local protesters and state and federal authorities reached an agreement. The 36-passenger yacht temporarily ceased docking on Molokai in early December after residents raised concerns about local protocol not being followed in allowing the boat to add Molokai to its Hawaii itinerary."We are grateful to the wonderful people of Molokai for their true aloha spirit. We hold tremendous respect for their unwavering desire to preserve their traditional lifestyle for future generations," said Dan Blanchard, ASC CEO.

New Home for Christmas

Monday, December 19th, 2011

For the first Christmas in years, Harry Puaa won’t have to worry about rain blowing into his house. The Vietnam veteran lives with his wife “in the oldest house on this road” – Pu`ukapele Ave. in Ho`olehua – and has called it home since the early 1940s. Now, with bedding peeking out of broken wall boards, glass windows mostly missing and a sagging roofline, living in the old house could make some people question their good fortunes.

But “Uncle Harry” doesn’t think much of it, referring nonchalantly to having spent two years in Vietnam with no house at all. “To me, it’s a house,” he says, motioning a camouflage uniform-clad arm toward a new home that is rising behind his old one.

Parish Prayers Answered

Monday, December 19th, 2011

In the soft glow of dusk and new lights of the bell tower, hundreds gathered in front of the recently-completed St. Damien Catholic church in Kaunakakai last Friday to celebrate its dedication.

Father Clyde Guerreiro led the throng through the doors for the first time, followed by Honolulu Bishop Larry Silva, a host of visiting priests and many Molokai parishioners. The parish has been planning and fundraising for the new worship structure since 1995, with a goal of holding Mass in the church on Christmas Eve 2011, according to Guerreiro.

Blessed Marianne Close to Sainthood

Monday, December 19th, 2011

Molokai’s Blessed Marianne Cope, who served in Kalaupapa with St. Damien, came one step closer to sainthood last Tuesday when Vatican officials attributed a second miracle to her intercession, according to the Syracuse, N.Y.-based Sisters of St. Francis.

Now all that remains before her canonization is Pope Benedict XVI’s approval, expected sometime next year.

A group of cardinals and bishops in Rome confirmed a medical board’s decision that the recovery of a woman from a fatal health condition was inexplicable, and due to a miracle of Blessed Marianne, according to Syracuse.com.

Lighting Up the Holidays

A spectacle of sparkles, Santas and steamrollers made its way down Ala Malama Avenue last Saturday, bringing smiles and holiday excitement to keiki and their families during the Molokai Island Foundation’s fourth annual Parade of Lights. Seventeen floats and five marching units showed off their seasonal best, riding through town and caroling Christmas favorites. Community members then milled about Mitchell Pauole Center (MPS) for a Molokai style Ho`olau`lea, indulging in sweet treats and perusing the colorful displays.  New to this year’s holiday festivities included the keiki ID program, presented by the Maui County Fire Department, where over 300 cards were distributed for children ages 12 and under. The Foundation is looking forward to their annual senior dinner and dance at MPC this Saturday.

For the Love of Art

For the Love of Art

It seemed as though art was everywhere in Kaunakakai last Saturday, as the Molokai Arts Center (MAC) hosted a gift fair and brunch next to Kalele Bookstore and the Saturday market. Artists offered everything from batik scarves and sea-glass jewelry to pottery, painting and purses, while Lono performed music accompanied by a troupe of hula dancers. The event was an opportunity for shoppers to purchase holiday gifts directly from local artists and musicians, who kept the profits, while also supporting future arts education programs at MAC via silent auction, lunch plates and other donations. MAC, Molokai’s first public art center, is being built at the Coffees of Hawaii location in Kualapu`u.

For more information about MAC, visit Molokaiarts.yolasite.com or its Facebook Page. Tax deductible donations may be sent as checks to the Molokai Arts Center at HC1 Box 370, Kaunakakai, HI 96748.
