Local Photographer to Show at Arts Center

Molokai boy Zach Socher will show his art photographs on Friday, March 23 at the Molokai Arts Center. The new Molokai Arts Center (MAC) is sponsoring Zach’s show as part of their ongoing series featuring local artists in all media organized by Kim Markham. The show begins with a student showing from 2 to 3 p.m. followed by an adult showing at 5 p.m. MAC is located in back of the Coffees of Hawaii plantation complex in Kualapu`u.

Since his student days at Molokai High School – Zach graduated in 2000 – Molokai locales have been his muse.…

Organic Initiative Funding Available

NRCS News Release

Federal funding is available for organic farmers, and now is your chance to benefit from this program. Offered under the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), a division of the United Stated Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Organic Initiative provides a wide array of conservation practices specifically designed for organic production. Practices will help the selected applicants meet many requirements of their USDA Organic System Plans and stay in compliance with USDA’s National Organic Program.

“We are pleased to provide this federal funding to help organic growers in our farming community,” said Mr. Angel Figueroa, NRCS Director of the Pacific Islands Area (PIA).…

Teruo Nakamoto

Teruo Nakamoto, 90, of Kualapu`u, Molokai, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Haie Makua, Kahului under Hospice Care. He was born February 16, 1922 in Wailuku.

He was a retired Foreman with the Del Monte Company. He is survived by his wife Agnes M. Nakamoto, son Roland (Sharon) Nakamoto, daughters Lorraine (William) Rhyne, Gwendolyn (Donald) Wheatlake, Sherrie (Guy) Ueki, eight grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and sister Kimiko “Kay” Nakagawa.

Services over ashes are on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Kaunakakai Baptist Church, Molokai. Visitation from 9:30 to 10:30am; Service at 10:30 a.m.

Family request no flowers. Casual attire.…

Pitching a Homerun for Youth

The County of Maui Parks and Recreation will host a free Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run competition for Molokai youth. The event will take place on March 31 at the Kaunakakai Little League Ball Park at 9 a.m.

Pitch, Hit & Run is the official skills competition of Major League Baseball. This grassroots program is designed to provide youngsters with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/softball skills.

Competitors are divided into four age divisions: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the 2012 MLB All-Star Game®.…

Live Well with Diabetes

UH Molokai Extension Office News Release

Got diabetes? Know someone who does? Be on the road to living well with diabetes by enrolling in the Diabetes Detection and Prevention Project. Participants will receive free, confidential medical screenings and information about diabetes and how to live well with the disease.

To participate, you need to have been diagnosed with diabetes or have a spouse or other family member with the disease, answer two surveys, provide a small blood sample (fingerstick) and urine sample, and attend this session to learn more about diabetes.

University of Hawaiian and Department of Hawaiian Homelands team up for “Farmer’s Friday” on March 23 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.…

Farmers Sports Start Season Strong

The spring sports season is off to a strong start for the Farmers. The boys’ volleyball team triumphed over the Lunas at Friday’s home game, boys baseball defeated Lanai at their away games this weekend, and girls softball won against Seabury in Friday’s game, though were unable to hold out against the Spartans on Saturday.

The team won their home game at The Barn on Friday against Lahainaluna. As of that game, Molokai is still undefeated this season (3-0). Coaches did not return calls after Saturday’s game.

At Friday’s game, the Farmers swept the first three sets in a row.…
