Molokai keiki participated in fun games, learned the story of Easter, and hunted for eggs at Hawaii’s biggest Easter Egg hunt, hosted by King’s Cathedral at Kaunakakai Ball Field on Saturday. It was a free event for young and old, with thousands of prize filled eggs for the finding.

Molokai Arts Center is pleased to announce a new class offering beginning in April 2012. Yoellah Yuhudah will teach the art of glass and clay bead making beginning on Tuesday April 17 2012 from 4 to 6 p.m. for an eight-week session. This art is also called “lampworking.”
In this structured curriculum, students will learn to make perfectly round beads as well as glass techniques like flowers, raking stripes and dragging techniques to create shapes and feather colors. The emphasis will be on safety and proper use of tools including the mandrell, the torch and various materials.…

Did you make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight or get fit? Has that resolution come and gone? The dancercise class at Kilohana Elementary School may be the answer to finally keeping that promise. The 21st Century grant is now offering Dancercise at Kilohana Elementary on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 4 to 5 p.m.
Like all 21st Century grant programs, the Dancercise class is free and open to anyone who would like to attend. Led by Lani Sawyer, the class is guaranteed to get your heart pumping. Dancercise is a combination of cardio, aerobics, dance and stretching that will leave you feeling energized and a little sweaty.…
The U.S. Marine Corps is looking to expand their presence in Hawaii, and some of their proposed operations may take place on Molokai. New aircraft would be based at Kaneohe on Oahu, but the Marine Corp’s draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) calls for increased activity at the Kalaupapa airport, and use of the Ho`olehua Airport for training.
“With new squadrons [coming], it’s important to take a look at all potentially available facilities,” said Maj. Alan Crouch.
The proposed activity was met with unanimous objection from Molokai residents who attended a Marine Corps consultation meeting last week. A public scoping meeting for the project was held on Molokai back in 2010, with a public comment period open last fall.…

Write Out Loud, a group of Molokai High School writers, has been meeting on Friday mornings to draft, revise and share their writing since November, 2011. This April, they are trying out a new genre: screenwriting. Write Out Loud will join the international movement of Script Frenzy that occurs each April and is made possible by the organizers of National Novel Writing Month in November.
Students have been preparing themselves by reading actual screenplays that were made into movies, such as “Benny and June.” They have been introduced to the infamous three act structure and the concept of the sought-after McGuffin.…
Rep. Mele Carroll News Release
The Molokai Irrigation System (MIS), currently facing drought conditions, has help on the way from Representative Mele Carroll. Last Friday at the Hawaii State Capitol, the House Committee on Agriculture held a hearing on two measures that would address the short-term and long-term concerns regarding the MIS.
Both House Concurrent Resolutions (HCR) 207 and 208, introduced by Rep. Carroll who currently represents the island of Molokai, were unanimously passed unamended in the House Committee of Agriculture.
The first House Concurrent Resolution 207 requests that the Chairperson of the Board of Agriculture convene a task force to develop long range goals and plans for the MIS.…
The Molokai Planning Commission, a decision-making body comprised of volunteer residents, is left on shaky ground after two commissioners leave the group this month. The five-year terms of Chairperson Miki`ala Pescaia and commissioner Debra Kelly have expired. That leaves the commission with barely enough members to make quorum, and with no candidates under serious consideration, the commission is seeking community volunteers.
“Right now, the authority rests with county council,” said Mike Molina, executive assistant to Mayor Alan Arakawa. The mayor’s office received a letter on March 6 informing them that the two applicants they had recommended, Karen Ashley and Amy Maeda, had been rejected by the council, most likely due to their lack of experience and long-term residency, according to Molina.…
The Farmers defeated Seabury Hall at Saturday’s home game. They are currently 3-1, tying for first place with the Spartans in the Maui Interscholastic League Division II standings. Highlights include Trevor Meyer, who finished 2-for-2 with a double, David Rapanot who was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs, and Brandon Willing-McCutcheon with two runs.

A west Molokai couple was recently awarded $3.87 million in damages when a Maui jury supported claims of harassment, threats and intimidation in a lawsuit against the Ke Nani Kai (KNK) homeowners association. In 2008, KNK residents Jim and Nancy Bevill, originally from California, sued the association, its board of directors, and several individuals, resulting in what has been called the largest monetary judgment of its kind in the country.
The 120-unit low-rise Ke Nani Kai resort on Molokai’s west end is intended to offer homeowners and vacationers a relaxing atmosphere with ample amenities. But for more than six years, “the Bevills found themselves targets… by an unlicensed contractor with a criminal record who was hired to do various tasks around the complex” as well as the resident manager, according to Terry Revere, who represented the Bevills.…
