Molokai, I hope you’re ready for the biggest and most anticipated show to ever hit the Friendly Isle. This Thursday, HI Finest Clothing presents the Molokai Throwback Jam 2012 Featuring Fiji, The Mana’o Company and Bruddah Waltah. Molokai has seen some pretty big shows over the years, but nothing quite like this one. It’s been years since these local music pioneers blessed our island with their music, and they are all going to be performing together on one stage in one night.

Fiji, The Mana`o Company and Bruddah Waltah all share multiple Na Hoku Awards, been in the business for over 20 years each, sold out shows all over the world, and all share a common love for Molokai.…

Hail to the Hall

Renovations to Kalaupapa’s Paschoal Hall celebrated

Paschoal Community Hall, formerly known as Kalaupapa Social Hall,  was once the center of Kalaupapa’s social life, but it had been years since the building was fully usable – until last week. Kalaupapa residents and patients celebrated the unofficial reopening and blessing of the 97-year-old hall, the settlement’s largest historic building, which was recently renovated and restored by the National Park Service (NPS).

History

The hall was built in 1916 as a place “for coming together, for socializing, for ‘talk story,’” according to the NPS website.  It was used to host silent movies, dances, amateur theater performances and concerts.…

Molokai college completes first outdoor studio art class

Local artists and artist-hopefuls were able to explore their own talents last semester as part of University of Hawaii-Maui College, Molokai’s first art studio class, Outdoor Studio Art 190. The fruits of their labors are currently on display at the college.

“It’s good to see artists developing their own style and personal enjoyment in art,” said instructor Heather Williams, who will also be teaching Intro to Painting Course –Art 123 in the fall. The students, who ranged from 18-year-olds to kupuna, were instructed to focus on natural sites as much as art concepts.…

First Kualapu`u School Tech Show

The first Kualapu`u School Tech Show is to honor and recognize student achievement in technology. The show will take place on Wednesday May 16 at the Kualapu`u School Café at 4 p.m. The top two projects will get Barns and Noble Nooks.

Using a rubric and a peer review process, the best projects are chosen by the students. The review their classmates projects, nominate projects and then vote. The process continues for grade level, until two candidates are nominated, one from the lower grades and one from the upper grade. The attendees then vote one of the two top projects.…

The Ho`oku`i Project on Molokai

Project Ho`oku`i encourages students to take up to 12 credits during their high school junior and senior years at UH Maui College, Molokai, which count (through a program called Running Start)towards their high school and college total credits. As this project nears the end of its second year, it is good to report that Molokai High School has 14 students enrolled on their journey to college.

The introduction to university life through the project comes at no cost to students’ families, as tuition and books are paid for by the project. This UH Native Hawaiian Education Grant program is also available for students at three schools in Maui, 12 schools on Hawaii Island, and has already helped 169 students on their way to college.…

Molokai Volleyball Player Signs with North Idaho

LeeNell “Nohe” Hernandez, a 5-foot-7-inch outside hitter from Molokai, has committed to the 2012 North Idaho College volleyball team.

“On my recent visit, I observed and felt the intensity of Coach Kelly’s [NIC Head Volleyball Coach Kandice Kelly] program, which made an immediate impression. I loved the team chemistry and passion which produced that quality volleyball,” Hernandez said. “Coeur d’Alene and the NIC campus is clearly a beautiful place surrounded with friendly people that made me feel like NIC is the perfect home for me for the next few years.”

In 2010, Hernandez was an impact player on Molokai’s first Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II state championship team.…

Hawaiian Language Summer School Opens

Kualapu`u School will be site for a four-week Hawaiian language summer school. The program, sponsored by the Department of Education and The Kamehameha Schools, will be open for students in grades K-8. Called Kula Kaiapuni Kauwela `o Molokai, the school will run from June 5 to July 6, 2012. Students do not need to be from an immersion classroom or have any Hawaiian language experience to enroll. All students should be motivated to learn and use Hawaiian for the duration of the program. Kula Kaiapuni Kauwela offers students with remedial assistance as well as academic enrichment.…

In a month, summer will be upon us and with it, longer and hotter days. Although most vegetables don’t enjoy this kind of weather, a few will respond favorably to heat and stress, which can enhance their nutrient content. According to research by U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Vitamin E or alpha-tocopherols content of early maturing varieties of soybeans can increase three-fold when under water and heat stress. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant, and most Americans are deficient. Soybeans are one of the most important food crops due to their protein content, in addition to other health benefits, including phytonutrients like phytosterols that lower the “bad” cholesterol that can lead to heart disease and stroke.…

Kaunakakai Harbor Improvements Meeting This Wednesday

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will conduct a public
information meeting in Kaunakakai on Wednesday, May 16, to provide information on planned construction activities for improvements to the commuter ferry (Molokai to Maui) and the impact to harbor operations.

“DLNR is the lead agency coordinating the design and construction of this major project, in coordination with the state Department of Transportation-Harbors Division, which manages the commercial harbor side,” said William J. Aila. “Public use of this essential harbor will continue during construction.”

Kanemitsu Bakery to Appeal $90,000 Fine

Dept. of Health cites sanitation violations

Kanemitsu Bakery plans to appeal $90,000 of fines in violations issued after failing to suspend operations for two days in March following a Department of Health (DOH) order. Kanemitsu Bakery, makers of the famous Molokai hot bread, distributes its products statewide. Customers have been giving their specialty breads rave reviews for over 75 years, but the DOH’s reaction wasn’t so enthusiastic.

“On March 7, an inspection by the DOH uncovered serious deficiencies in the maintenance and manufacturing practices conducted at the facility,” stated a DOH press release. Violations included improper cleaning of cooking implements, inadequate control of rodents, lack of hot water, and general unsanitary conditions.…
