National Recycle Day at Kilohana

Community Contributed

By Val Hart

To celebrate National Recycle Day on Nov. 15, the Kindergarten and fourth grade students of Kilohana Elementary School presented visual, verbal, and written displays concerning changes humans have made on the world. To support environmental education in the schools and in the community, we are emphasizing the three Rs — Reuse, Reduce and Recycle – and practicing it in our daily lives. Also, by pledging to support positive environmental practices, we are gaining a better understanding about the connections existing between humans, our natural resources, and the natural environment.

Kaua Kaili, and Justice Luafalemana showed a display on erosion, including pictures of the hazardous conditions that develop on our roadways during heavy rains.…

Photos: Parade of Lights 2012

The faces of hundreds of keiki and ohana lining Ala Malama Avenue lit up as lavishly decorated Christmas-themed floats and marching teams paraded past last Saturday night. The Molokai Island Foundation’s fifth annual Parade of Lights featured 13 floats and eight marching units this year, including entries from Friendly Market, Monsanto, and other local businesses. Just a few of this year’s favorites included Rudolph the reindeer school bus, Poinsettia hula dancers, the Grinch and of course, Santa Claus.

Families and local organizations dedicated hours to designing and decorating their floats in hopes of winning this year’s contest. The Grinch and Whoville float, representing the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, took home the grand prize of $700.…

Molokai Red Cross Volunteers Spread Aloha

When Hawaii was hit with a tsunami following the earthquake in Japan last March, Molokai’s seven Red Cross volunteers were spread thin, working around the clock to assess damages and connect residents with the resources they needed. There were 25 cases of damages reported on the island — the highest number in Maui County, according to Michele Liberty, Red Cross Maui director.

“After the Japan tsunami, we realized there was clearly a need… it lit the fire to focus on growing the Molokai team,” said Liberty. Since then, membership on the island has grown to 20, thanks to ongoing training workshops and recruitment efforts.…

Remembering the Pearl Harbor Attack

Sunday, December 2nd, 2012

On Dec. 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise military attack on the U.S. naval base at Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor. Eight U.S. battleships were damaged, and four were sunk. One hundred eighty-eight U.S. aircraft were destroyed. Two thousand four hundred two Americans were killed and more than 1,000 were wounded. The attack shocked Americans, and prompted the U.S. entry into World War II, with a declaration of war on Japan announced the following day.

Around Hawaii, residents feared further Japanese attacks. On Molokai, the community experienced black-outs, drills and food rationing. In honor of Pearl Harbor Day this Friday, the Dispatch asked Molokai residents to share memories of reactions on the day of the attack and life in the months that followed.…

Scoring Green Hair

Molokai High School (MHS) Principal Stan Hao may have looked like his usual self when he showed up for school last Thursday morning, but by lunchtime, he was sporting a flashy new look –spiky, green hair. At the start of last school year, Hao promised MHS students that if they reached Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards, he would dye his hair green for the day in front of the entire school. Though MHS did not technically meet AYP standards due to a shortfall in graduation rates, their double digit gains in both the math and reading portions of the Hawaii State Assessment (HSA) last year were noteworthy.…

Middle School Most Improved in the State

With great achievement comes great reward, and Molokai Middle School (MMS) students have certainly earned both. They were recently recognized by the Department of Education (DOE) as the most improved school in the state. Not only did they make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards for the first time since they separated from the high school eight years ago, but they made significant, double-digit improvements in both reading and math.

“It is my privilege to come here because you are the best performing school in the entire state of Hawaii,” said the Board of Education Chairman Don Horner at an academic achievement celebration assembly held at the school last Thursday.…
