Kilohana Honored

 

Kilohana Elementary School received an award from the Department of Education (DOE) in recognition of three years of improvements academically.

Kilohana was amongst the top five percent of public schools in the state that demonstrated a growth in math from 2010 to 2012, Ronn Nozoe, deputy superintendent for the Hawaii DOE, said in a letter to Kilohana principal Richard Stevens. The letter informed Stevens that his school was a recipient of the Strive HI award and a one-time grant of $12,500.

“The department is committed to schools like yours that emphasize innovation and reform, attempt to close the achievement gap, and prepare students for college and career,” Nozoe said in the letter.…

Elsa’s Kitchen: Sharp new look for old Pork House

 

Roast Pork House, a favorite dining spot for visitors and locals alike, has added a lot of new perks including free coffee and WIFI since it came under new management. Elsa Salazar Aquino, who worked at the restaurant since it opened over a year ago, purchased the establishment and made some dramatic changes, including a more personable business name and a clean and cohesive new look.

Elsa’s Kitchen, as it now goes by, celebrated its grand opening Monday, March 4. Those who stopped by noticed a number of new changes, including a vibrant new logo that is featured on the front sign and uniforms as well as an expanded menu.…

Molokai Arts Center (MAC) invites everyone to the third annual Soup R’ Bowl fundraiser March 16 at Coffees of Hawaii in Kualapu`u. MAC is helping Coffees of Hawaii celebrate the 200th anniversary of coffee in the Hawaiian islands. With hundreds of beautiful bowls, this Soup R’ Bowl promises to be the best yet.

Soup will be served from 5 until 7 p.m. The public can sip on soup and enjoy the tunes of jazz pianist David Henderson, followed by the U.S. Air Force Band.

The soup choices include: vegetarian pumpkin, tortilla, chicken with wild rice, Portuguese bean and chili.…

Soap for Molokai, Pride in Residency

 

Molokai Soaps has its own shop now, and owner Patricia Hammond hopes to bring some pride in residency to Kaunakakai. This means she’s working on beautifying town and encouraging others to follow suit.

She moved her business into a portion of the old Fish and Dive on the main strip of Ala Malama Street. The remaining portion of the former dive shop, though empty, is now a little livelier thanks to Hammond’s initiative.

“This is the first thing you see when you come into town,” Hammond said as she stood outside the store next to her soap shop. “And unfortunately it’s an ugly building.”…

Molokai Resident Receives MBA

 

Education was a priority for Liliana Napoleon. After overcoming a decade’s worth of challenges, the Mana`e resident received her master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) last semester.

She attained her bachelor degree from Western Governors University (WGU), an online, nonprofit school with over 39,000 students nation-wide.

When she completed a double associate degree from Molokai Education Center in 2004, her plans were to continue her education through the University of Hawaii system. But when her father fell terminally ill, her plans changed.

“Those who have been touched by cancer truly know that this disease does not sleep,” she said, noting the constant care she devoted to her father.…

Eat, Drink and be Maika`i: Hotel Lively but No Kitchen Until 2014

When Hula Shores, Hotel Molokai’s restaurant and bar, burned down last June, there were questions over the business’s future. But thanks to a small menu and some talented kupuna, Hotel Molokai is still serving up drinks, food and entertainment until the new restaurant is rebuilt.

Hotel chef Gene Pike cooks up mahi-mahi, chicken, hamburgers and hotdogs as dinner plates or sandwiches Thursday through Monday from 4 until 9 p.m. Na Kupuna attracts a crowd to the bar each Friday night, and the market that goes along with the event gives vendors a chance to make money and send visitors home with souvenirs.…

Captain Clay Ching left his rod and reel behind last Thursday as he made his way into the Molokai High School (MHS) library. He was there for Future Fest, an annual event that brings together professionals and students at MHS. And though his fishing equipment was back on the boat, the man behind Hallelujah Hou Fishing still did some casting in the midst of books and computers.

“The thing about this day is vision casting,” Captain Clay said about Future Fest. Ching explained how his hobby had transformed into a business which allowed him to support his family. This inspired a student who said he enjoyed kayak fishing, and Ching encouraged him to follow that interest into a career offering a unique activity on Molokai.…

Molokai Middle and Kualapu`u Charter schools news release

The first 5K in the Kualapu’u Charter and Molokai Middle School series of five 5K’s went off without a hitch this Saturday with over 40 participants – racers, runners and walkers – taking on the three-mile challenge from Coffees of Hawai`i to Ala Ekahi and back.

Taking first place overall was Molokai High School track standout Akona Adolpho, winning in a time of 20:07.  Second and third places went to fellow MHS teammates: Hunter Manaba with a time of 21:50 and Grayson Aldridge with a time of 22:08.  In the women’s open division, Sue Forbes and Jesse Ford continued their three-year duel with Sue managing to outlast her longtime rival and friend. …

Girls Pin Place at States

Molokai High School wrestlers competed in the HHSAA State Championship this weekend. The girls team placed fifth overall with a score of 91.1, and the boys finished 35th out of 48 schools with a 10.5.

Five girls and one boy placed in the individual competitions. Kailaoe Cabating came out in second in the 105-pund weight class, Rizpah Torres Umi finished third in the 125 class, Desiree Corpuz tooke fourth place in the 113 class, Cendell Manley finished fifth in the 140 and Karley Kaulili placed sixth in the 109-pound weight class. Noah Caparida finished sixth in the boys 140-pound weight class.…
