The Shields’ Animal Shelter Foundation would like to welcome you to a community forum at The Mitchell Pauole Center on Monday, May 6 at 6 p.m. Please join us in an open discussion regarding our proposal to bring The Shields’ Animal Shelter to Molokai.

The Foundation was established in 2009 upon the passing of longtime friend of Molokai, Mrs. Kathleen Shields. A great animal lover, Mrs. Shields supported the mission of the Molokai Humane Society, and it was her dream to one day see a fully functioning animal shelter on Molokai. Mrs. Shields’ was so inclined to improve the lives of the animals on Molokai that in her will she left a small endowment for the expressed purpose of building a shelter on this island she loved so very much.…

Rock mining isn’t one of Molokai’s more well-known industries, but it nonetheless plays an important role on the island. Molokai rock is used to pave all the island’s roads, form the cement for its buildings and sidewalks, provides gravel to repair its dirt roads and stones for its rock walls. Since mining poses certain risks and dangers, it is recommended that they offer msha new miner training to their workers.

In mining operations, the use of electric motors plays a crucial role in powering various equipment, from drills and crushers to conveyors and pumps.…

Preschool Travels for Keiki

 

Every Monday and Wednesday morning, the Mitchell Pauole Center is transformed into an area of learning and discovery as caregivers bring their keiki to Tutu and Me Traveling Preschool.

“It’s fun for me and it’s fun for them,” said Jerrilu Heen, who brings her granddaughter, Alai Miguel, to the free program. “Over here there are no distractions. We’re here and we’re focused on playing together.”

That’s the idea behind Tutu and Me, a free program dedicated to the development of keiki. Head teacher Kanoe Paleka said the caregivers – often grandparents – bring children as old as 5 to interact over games, songs, stories and playtime.…

Halau Reunites for Aunty Moana

Thousands of supporters from Molokai, Hawaii and around the world gathered on Molokai April 27 to celebrate the life and legacy of Aunty Moana Dudoit. Members of the late kumu hula’s halau over the past 40 years reunited, performing together in remembrance of Dudoit, who died March 16 at the age of 73.

The celebration, which followed a memorial service for friends and family, honored Dudoit with hula, food and togetherness. Dudoit’s grandniece Zhantell Dudoit emceed the event, adding humor and commentary as different generations of the halau took the stage. Dudoit’s sister Raquel Dudoit, who also led the halau, helped provide music for the dancers.…

New Homes Coming for Habitat for Humanity

Molokai Habitat for Humanity (MHFH) received a grant that will allow the organization to build four to 10 homes over the next two years. In mid-April, MHFH was awarded $290,000 from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), which will support the Molokai organization’s Native Hawaiian Housing Program. MHFH was one of five organizations awarded funds under OHA’s new Stability in Housing initiative.

Since taking the position of Executive Director of MHFH two years ago, Zhantell Dudoit said the organization has been working to restructure and build sustainable partnerships with agencies like OHA and the Department of Hawaiian Homelands (DHHL). She said with a lagging economy, funding has been harder to obtain while the cost of building is rising.…

Baseball, Softball Close Regular Seasons Strong

Molokai High School Baseball and Softball teams both finished their regular seasons at the top of their league as they swing for a regional title.

Lady Farmers Softball won the Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) Division II championships last weekend and MHS Baseball will compete for the title this weekend on Maui.

The girls secured a spot at states thanks to an 18-1 win against St. Anthony’s School last Thursday that put the team at the top of their league for the season. They carried the winning streak into the MIL DII championship at the tournament last weekend and will return to Maui May 2 for the HHSAA State tournament.…

Island Air Reduces Molokai Flights

One of Molokai’s primary air carriers, Island Air, has made changes to their flight schedule that have raised concerns among local customers. The airline has cancelled all flights between Molokai and Maui, and as of May, will decrease flights between Molokai and Honolulu from five to three per day.

“My concern for the decrease of Island Air travel to Honolulu is for our island population,” said Molokai resident and county councilmember Stacy Crivello. “Molokai people travel to Honolulu for specialized medical needs or hospitalization that may not be provided by Molokai’s health care providers. Molokai families also utilize Island Air… to visit and care for our sick `ohana and be part of our loved one’s celebration of life.”…

Duo Takes Tennis Title

Molokai High School tennis players Pono Chow and Kamanu Pascua went into their final game of the Maui Interscholastic League (MIL) championship match last Saturday against King Kekaulike. With one win for each team and 300 spectators surrounding the court, this final game could put Chow and Pascua in the Molokai history books as the island’s first MIL tennis champions.

“I just kept telling myself and my partner that we have to win – we just have to,” said Chow. “We played hard to the end and we won.”

Boys’ tennis coach Pono Asano said when he met with Chow and Pascua before the final game, the first thing out of the players’ mouths was “I won’t quit.”…

March in March: What We Love, We Will Protect

The statewide “March in March” event was inspired by professional surfer and MMA fighter Dustin Barca, in partnership with the Hawaii GMO Justice Coalition. Barca’s intention was to bring awareness to GMOs and chemical testing conducted by Monsanto and other biotech companies throughout Hawaii, pointing out that “everything we love is in serious danger — our children, our land and our ocean.”

Thousands gathered to voice their concerns; the five-island demonstration opened on Oahu, continued on Kauai, Hawaii Island, Maui, and concluded here on Molokai.

“I felt a sense of togetherness like nothing I have ever been a part of before,” said Molokai father Jay Duquette.…

Halau Hula O Kukunaokala News Release

The 22nd Annual Molokai Ka Hula Piko Festival is a three-day community event celebrating the birth of hula on the island of Molokai with a goal of educating the community and visitors alike. This year’s festival will be held Thursday, May 2 through Saturday, May 4, with Ho`olaulea and hula show on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lanikeha Community Center in Ho`olehua.

The festival consists of two days of educational and cultural day excursions, including sharing mo`olelo (story) and hula (dance) onsite at Ka`ana, the place where according to Molokai tradition, the art of hula began.…
