Are you dealing with difficulties due to current or former sex assault or abuse? Help is here. The Molokai Sexual Assault Center provides information and referrals, supportive advocacy, clinical therapy, case management, support groups and other services for youth, survivors, kupuna and children.

Call Child and Family Services at 553-5529. Our office is located at 107 Ala Malama, Room A and B in Kaunakakai. Office walk-ins are welcome. Regular business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on holidays. Our Sex Assault hotline is open 24 hours a day.

Our hotline offers confidential advocacy support and referrals.…

Hospital Celebrates 50 Years

A lot has changed in medical services on Molokai since the mid-1900s — a time when it wasn’t unusual to go into the hospital to get your tonsils out and your doctor would have just come from delivering a baby. Hours before that, he would have removed your neighbor’s appendix.

“People used to think, ‘He’s a doctor, he’s supposed to do it all,’” Dr. Paul Stevens, the island’s oldest physician, said in a 2010 interview. Stevens first came to Molokai in 1956, and has practiced medicine here ever since.

Last Saturday, Molokai General Hospital celebrated its 50th anniversary — as well as remembered all the changes in Molokai healthcare over the years, with the introduction of treatments like antibody production services as well.…

Mitchell Pauole Center Construction to Move Forward

A slew of proposed improvements to the Mitchell Pauole Center in Kaunakakai have been approved and construction will begin next year. The changes include expanding the existing lanai and constructing a new freestanding lanai, as well as updating the facility’s kitchen and upgrading the entire building to current Americans with Disabilities (ADA) standards. The community center is currently scheduled to be closed for general use starting in February through the end of 2014. They find an aerial lifts service to help them with the construction. You can also use scaffolding from Badger Ladder that provides a safe and stable working platform. …

Fuddy Given Final Salute on Molokai

Fuddy Given Final Salute on Molokai

Department of Health Director Loretta Fuddy was given a final salute when her casket left Molokai Monday morning. Molokai Fire Rescue and Police personnel accompanied her body to the airport, where it was flown to Honolulu.

“We saved eight,” paramedic Scotty Schaefer reminded fellow emergency responders, “because of what you did… We gave her a chance…Loretta was family to us.”

Fuddy was a passenger on Makaki Kai plane leaving Kalaupapa Wednesday that experienced engine failure and landed in the water just off the peninsula. Fuddy died in the water after exiting the plane.

8 Survivors, 1 Death in Makani Kai Kalaupapa Crash — UPDATED

Updated Thursday, 12/12 at 3 p.m.

A Makani Kai flight departing Kalaupapa this afternoon crashed into the water about 3:45 p.m. shortly after take-off about 1/2 mile off the peninsula last night. Eight on board the Cessna Grand Caravan survived, while Department of Health Director Loretta Fuddy died in the water after exiting the sinking plane.

The pilot, Clyde Kawasaki, has been flying for Makani Kai for one year. He previously worked as a pilot for Aloha Airlines and has experience working thousands of hours of flight time, according to a Makani Kai representative.

“He’s a pilot that I’ve flown with frequently — he’s one of the best,” said Department of Health Kalaupapa Administrator Mark Miller.…

At the beginning of last month, the Molokai High School VEX Robotics team competed in the Valley Isle VEX Tournament held in Iao Middle School on Maui. The tournament consisted of 23 teams from Kauai, Oahu, and Maui. Molokai teams 1037A and 1037B (“The Farmers”) placed 5th and 10th place respectively, ending up in the quarter finals.

VEX Robotics is a program designed to introduce the world of robots to children, teenagers and even adults. VEX provides a learning environment for people interested in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (known as STEM).…

Warming Up with Winter Athletics

The end of the year brings a new winter athletic season. Though most students are getting ready to take a holiday break, farmer athletes are fired up, training hard and ringing in the New Year with new coaches, new competition and new goals for state championships.

For MHS swimming, some athletes have been training all year through the Molokai Chapter of Maui Dolphins Swim Club (MDSC) — a swimming program for all ages that began in August — prepping for the season.

Lighting the Way for Christmas

As darkness fell over Kaunakakai last Saturday, the town transformed into a festive wonderland of lights.  Moving to the beat of seasonal tunes and decked with colorful costumes and light displays, a parade of 22 community groups and organizations announced the arrival of Christmas, Molokai-style.

Kaunakakai’s main street closed for a few hours as the community crowded the streets for the seventh annual Parade of Lights.
“I’ve watched the parade almost every year and this year was the most beautiful I’ve seen,” said resident Sally Trinidad.

The parade began by Rawlins Chevron and travelled to Mitchell Pauole Center. Spectators of all ages smiled and waved at their favorite holiday-themed floats, with this year’s standouts including Friendly Market’s ohana-themed float complete with a pig cooking on a rotating spit, Monsanto’s gift-wrapped tractor and the Church of Latter Day Saints’ Nightmare Before Christmas float.…
