Maui Electric Hosts Community Meetings This Week

Maui Electric Company invites the Molokai community to attend a series of public meetings regarding the recent power outages affecting customers on the island.

There will be three meetings to accommodate customers across the island. Light refreshments will be served.

The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the Kualapu`u School Cafeteria 6 p.m. A meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 29 will take place at Kilohana Community Center at 6 p.m. On Thursday, Jan. 30, the final meeting will be at Kulana `Oiwi at 6 p.m.…

Girls Basketball MIL Champs

The Lady Farmers had only one loss under their belt against Lanai when they entering the Maui Interscholastic League Division II Basketball Championship this year. But that didn’t phase them last weekend as they came away with the championship title, sweeping Lanai 65-37. Top scorers were Tiara English with 20 points, Illana Meyer with 17, and Lehiwa Pedro and Hepuakea Falealii both scoring 8.

“I thought the girls made a huge leap during practice and prepared well for the MILs,” said coach Lee DeRouin. “We put a great deal of pressure with our guards did a great job defensively.”

DeRouin said the girls basketball program has had a history of talented athletes.…

Documentary Featuring Challenges of Molokai High Athletics Airs This Weekend

“Going the Distance: The Journey of Molokai and Lanai High Sports,” a new documentary chronicling the unique, harsh challenges faced by students representing Molokai High School or Lanai High School in interscholastic athletics, airs on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. on KGMB and Sunday, Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. on KHNL. “Going the Distance” was filmed and produced by aio Hawaii and the Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii (DACH) with the broadcast support of Hawaii News Now.

Unlike other high school teams nationwide that simply board buses, every away game or tournament for Molokai and Lanai student-athletes means a bumpy ferry or small plane ride, often departing in the early morning, twelve hours or more before game time.…

As long as he remembers, Father James Loughren, a country boy from the foothills of the Adirondacks, knew he wanted to be a priest. After studying at St. John’s Seminary in Boston and receiving Master’s degrees in Divinity and in Systematic Theology, he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest. After years of serving very happily in many churches throughout upstate New York, he felt he needed to take some time off to pray and reflect further on God’s will and purpose for his life and ministry.

A short time later, through the invitation of a friend, an Episcopal bishop, God revealed His plan and Father Jim returned to active ministry, now as an Episcopal priest.…

Ozone Therapy on Molokai

Major Autohemotherapy (MAH) is a natural remedy that utilizes ozone to purify the body of various illnesses.  Oxygen is used to generate medical grade ozone.  A small amount of blood is removed and introduced into an IV bag of normal saline.  Medical ozone is then introduced into the bag.  This is then passed through an ultra-violet light machine and infused back into the body, a treatment that is now available on Molokai.

In our local diet, we have a tendency to consume too much meat and rice, and not enough greens. Greens are the missing link to a healthy balanced diet, along with fruits, in meeting requirements of the food pyramid. Today, greens are finding their way into our diets through healthy drinks utilizing lettuce, kale, spinach and other greens.

The largest group of vegetable greens has a common ancestor that evolved into at least six rather distinct groups. Collectively known as crucifers, cabbages or mustards, and also by their Latin name, Brassicas, they include broccoli, cauliflower, collards, mustard greens, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbages, and a mix of Chinese mustards.…

Molokai Athletes Nominated as National All-Stars

Nearly 1,000 of the nation’s top high school boys and girls basketball athletes are nominated each year to play on one of two all-star teams for the McDonald’s All American Games. This year, two players in state were nominated for the event that in the past has included basketball legends like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett. Those two players are both Molokai High School (MHS) students — seniors Shaniah Lopez and David Rapanot will have a chance to make the final roster.

“We are delighted that Shaniah and David were chosen to continue in the selection process to compete in the McDonald’s All American Games,” said Erlinda Rosario, a McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii owner and operator, in a press release.…

On Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, the Molokai College Career Tour Club (MCCTC) will present Keola Beamer, internationally recognized Hawaiian slack-key guitar master and composer, in concert at the Molokai Community Health Center (Old Pau Hana Inn). There will be dinner, music, silent auction, Valentine’s treats, and more for couples and families. The doors for silent auction will open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. with entertainment by the MCCTC members and other performers followed by Keola Beamer’s concert at 8:30 p.m. Tickets including dinner cost $50 while the VIP tables cost $75 a seat. …

HI Businesses Support Molokai and Lanai Athletics

Proceeds from a fundraiser event called “Cheers for Molokai and Lanai High,” held on Oahu, will support student-athletes at Molokai High and Lanai High whose athletic departments annually face travel budget shortfalls. Held by Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii (DACH), a nonprofit founded in 2012 to advance sports programs of Hawaii’s public schools and support student athletes, the fundraiser will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., in front of Murphy’s Bar and Grill in downtown Honolulu.

In the current 2013-14 school year, Molokai High is underfunded by about $32,000, and Lanai High is often forced to travel with partial squads and offers a limited number of sports due to lack of funding and resources.…

Landfill Closed After Ordnance Discovery

The Molokai Landfill closed temporarily last week after workers discovered a potentially unexploded ordnance there on Monday.

“The ordinance was found during the sorting and separating of an older waste pile that consisted mostly of construction…waste with green waste mixed in it,” said Rod Antone, Maui County communications director.

The ordnance was from the 1940s, when military aircraft dropped practice bombs on some areas of Molokai for training, according to U.S. Army’s Staff Sergeant Corbin Heard with the 74th Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit at Schofield Barracks.

After the ordnance was found, the Molokai Police Department contacted Heard’s unit to investigate the bomb.…
