Film Explores Community-Based Resource Management

The half hour documentary film “Fishing Pono: Living In Harmony With The Sea” tells the story of declining fisheries and how some Native Hawaiian communities are using traditional conservation practices to restore their fishing grounds.

 

Featuring lifelong fisherman Kelson “Mac” Poepoe, narrated by Kauai native Mauna Kea Trask, and directed by award winning helmer Mary Lambert, “Fishing Pono”follows Trask as he travels to Molokai to meet Poepoe and learn how his community based conservation program succeeded.

 

Poepoe’s fishing conservation program on Molokai, based on historical practices, is an inspiring story of how one community turned the tide on a seemingly doomed resource.…

Jeans Warehouse Opening on Molokai

When Molokai residents expressed their farewell to the Molokai General Store in August, many were saddened to see the one-stop shop close its doors.  The Mikami family was grateful for the community support over the years, but unfortunately, was driven to close their doors due to declining sales.

The Mikami family has been searching for new occupants to provide a welcomed service to the island of Molokai.   Protecting the community and culture of Molokai has been the key concern with Mr. David and Jon Mikami’s search and has been very selective in their decision.

As Jeans Warehouse prepares to set up its first store on The Friendly Isle this October, taking over the space once occupied by Molokai General Store, stakeholders may want to consider installing Factory Flooring to ensure a seamless and stylish environment.…

Molokai residents can learn how to transform scrap lumber into a powerful soil amendment at a Biochar Production Workshop on Friday, Sept. 5. The workshop will be led by guest speaker Josiah Hunt of Hawaii Biochar Products. Biochar improves soil by providing habitat for microbial life. It also retains water and sequesters carbon, making it a cool for climate mitigation.

Come to the event at the UH Maui, Molokai Farm in the Molokai Agricultural Park Sept. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. For more information, contact the Extension Office at 567-6929. Granting Success

When she was in eighth grade, Molokai High junior Momi Afelin wrote her first grant for robotics education. Fast forward three years and she has five successful grants under her belt, with the most recent awarded to the Kaunakakai Elementary robotics program last Friday morning.

“I hope this grant opens the kids’ eyes to all the opportunities that are out there for them in STEM,” Afelin said, referring to science, technology, engineering and math fields

For the last two years, Afelin has volunteered her time as a student mentor after school at Kaunakakai Elementary to help students with their presentation skills.…

Life-Saving Flights

It usually signals unfortunate circumstances when Hawaii Life Flight (HLF) — an air ambulance service — arrives, but last week it was a celebration. The company has been offering emergency air medical transport on Molokai since 2006, and this year, made the island one of its bases. That means faster service for Molokai residents in need – and a better chance to save more lives, according to HLF staff.

“For all time-sensitive patients, like stroke, cardiac and trauma, every second counts… It can be life or death,” said flight nurse and Molokai base manager Josh Schroeder.

With the nearest bases on Oahu and Maui, the response time for HLF crew to arrive on Molokai for a call used to be between 45 minutes and an hour and a half, said Schroeder.…

Aloha my fellow veterans and residents of Molokai, old Jesse here with all the veterans news and upcoming events. The 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, is nicknamed “The Walking Dead.” Do you know why? First activated during WW II, the infantry battalion earned its macabre nickname during the Vietnam War. In a 1966 speech former Vietnamese Prime Minister Ho Chi Minh referred to the Marines as “walking dead,” dead but not buried. The unit sustained the highest casualty rate in Marine history during the Vietnam era, according to the battalion’s webpage on Marines. Military deployed for a combat tour lasting 47 months and seven days, another record.…

Over 25 years ago, we encountered a swarm of some vicious Yellow Jackets at Forest Camp. Later, as we ate lunch of venison and rice, they started landing and feeding on the venison. I knew this wasn’t just any old Yellow Jacket; this was the notorious Western Yellow Jacket. Yellow Jackets are wasps, and have a predatory and also a scavenging habit and will feed on many insects, including plant-eating insects and nuisance flies around house and garden. However, they become a major threat when they attack humans, good insects and animals, including Hawaii’s native species.…

Kawela Bridge Project Completion

There’s good news for drivers who live on the east end as well as residents of the Kawela area: construction on the Kawela Bridge is finally complete.

The former, 70-year-old bridge was deteriorating, and a $6 million construction project began back in 2012 to remove the original bridge and replace it with what you see today.

The old bridge, constructed around 1940, was clogged with stream deposits which impeded the flow of water below the deck, resulting in flooding in neighboring properties, said Project Engineer at Goodfellow Bros., Inc., Clayton Morrell.

Goodfellow Bros., Inc was contracted to remove the old bridge and build a new one in its place with a capacity to handle high volumes of water to pass beneath the roadway and remove stream deposit buildup that migrates down, Morrell said.…
