Aloha all my fellow veterans and residents of Molokai, old Jesse here with all the veterans news and upcoming events. What is the VA Telehealth program? Telehealth is the use of electronic information to support long-distance health care. Technologies can include videoconferencing, the Internet, and wireless communications to share health information with care providers.

The VA’s program is called the Coordination Home TeleHealth Services for veterans including those with chronic health problems, homebound veterans, veterans who need assisted living services and veterans with mental health conditions. Benefits of this program include prevention or reduction of completions from chronic health conditions, assistance in managing your health and making health decisions, and daily monitoring of your health condition by a registered nurse care coordinator trained in the use of home telehealth technology.…

Halau Prepares for Hula’s Biggest Stage

 

Last week, residents and visitors at the Molokai Community Health Center got a sneak peek of the talents to come in this year’s Merrie Monarch Festival.

Moana’s Hula Halau, which was invited to participate in the storied hula festival in Hilo this year, held their annual dinner show last Saturday night. Dancers from keiki to kupuna entertained a crowd of hundreds in a fundraiser for festival-bound halau members. It’s been more than 10 years since the halau has performed at the festival.

“To be asked to come again is a privilege for us because we have a lot of new girls and [it’s] a good experience for them,” said halau Kumu Hula Valerie Dudoit-Temahaga.…

Rep. Mele Carroll Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of former state House Representative Diana “Mele” Carroll.  She passed at 3:50 am on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015 with her family at her side.  At this time services are pending and will be announced at a later date.

Carroll was re-elected on Nov. 4, 2014 to begin her sixth term, representing the 13th House district.   The 13th District is a true canoe district that includes East Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kaho`olawe and Molokini.

On Friday, Feb. 20, Sergeant Major Ronald Green will become the top enlisted man in the Marine Corps. Commandant General Joseph Dunford has chosen Sgt. Maj. Green to be the 18th Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps. I join with Marines around the world in congratulating him and wishing him the best in his new job.

In a recent copy of the Marine Times, they reported a problem at the VA Medical Center in Tomah, WI of overmedication of patients and prescription practices.…

Molokai Arts Center (MAC) announces its fifth annual Soup’ R Bowl fundraising event, a fundraiser for the arts and art education on Molokai.

Ho`ola Hou Community-Based Scholarship

MOM Hui News Release

The MOM Hui’s 2015-2016 Ho’ola Hou Community-Based Scholarship application was released on Feb. 11, 2014.

There are six awards available in the amount is $1,103.  Individuals who are seeking an Associate’s, Bachelor’s or higher degree in one of the following areas: Health, Environmental Studies, Sustainable/Organic Farming or Hawaiian Studies may be eligible.

The completed application and supporting documents are due on April 15.

Mahalo to the generous donation of the Molokai Environmental Protection Act and the many, many contributions from members of our Molokai community for contributing to this annual fund.

MEO Celebrates 50 Years

This year Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) celebrates 50 years of service to the people of Molokai and Maui County. MEO began in 1965 as nonprofit grass roots Community Action Agency chartered to fight poverty in Maui County.

For more than two generations MEO has been engaged in this effort through community advocacy and by providing needed services such as transportation, early childhood development, youth services, inmate reintegration back into the community, and micro loans and business development services to low-income entrepreneurs.

Continuing with efforts to expand upon our work in the community, on March 21, MEO will host our 50th anniversary fundraiser dinner “Dancing with Our Stars.”…

Lono I Ka Makahiki! It is the time of year when schools from all around Hawaii  come together to celebrate Makahiki. Makahiki is the season when ancient Hawaiians observed harvest by holding  strength and skill competitions. We play  games like  `ulu  maika, where you roll a circular stone between two stakes. Konane is often called Hawaiian checkers. Pa Uma, is stand up arm-­‐wrestling. Schools from around the state visit the sacred Makahiki grounds called Na’iwa.…
