If you care about using our coastal roads, surfing, eating kole, ʻoio, limu, and going to the grocery stores in Kaunakakai, sea level rise affects you!

The sea level is expected to rise approximately 4.07 feet in Hawaii before the end of 2100 if we continue to operate business as usual. Large parts of Kaunakakai town will be flooded with seawater, including major infrastructure. Sust’ainable Molokai is leading the planning process to ensure that our community is prepared to adapt to this already occurring and ongoing change. Coastal communities and waterfront property owners may need to start new seawall construction projects and look for equipment like a bobcat rental to prepare for the rising sea level.…

Families to Get Housing Needs Through Grant

Three Ho’olehua families will have improved living conditions thanks to a grant given to The Molokai Baptist Church’s Aloha in Action program, which has been helping community members with building needs for the past 12 years. The $75,000 grant was awarded to the program last week by the Nareit Foundation. 

The funding will provide a new roof and residential gutter system repair for a disabled, single mother with her three kids who currently live under a badly leaking roof; a bathroom and septic system installation for a single mother with two children and a grandchild without a bathroom in their home; and a small house for a couple on their homestead property.…

Cases Decline, State Readies for Child Vaccines

Molokai COVID cases continue to slow as the island logged two new COVID cases on Oct. 18, marking the only positive tests in the past week. According to the Dept. of Health, nearly 73 percent of Molokai’s population has initiated COVID-19 vaccinations – or 4,566 residents – and just over 68 percent, or 4,315 residents, are fully vaccinated, as of last week. 

Statewide, the daily average of new cases has dropped to 124 over the last week, according to the Dept. of Health. As the state reached 70 percent vaccinated two weeks ago – the benchmark at which Gov.…

Hoʻahu Energy Cooperative Molokai, a local group formed to support community-owned energy projects, invites you to join us for our next virtual workshop on Saturday, Nov. 1, 9 to 10:30 a.m.

The workshop continues Hoʻahu’s work to design solar and battery storage projects for Maui Electric’s upcoming Community Based Renewable Energy (CBRE) Request for Proposals (RFP).

This Saturday, we will focus on discussing how best to make sure that low-income residents have the opportunity to save money on their electricity bill by participating in Hoʻahuʻs CBRE project.

The annual membership meeting of the Kaunakakai Filipino Association has been postponed to Thursday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. Collectors will be contacting members when location (tentatively Veteran’s Center) is confirmed.

Agenda includes elections and new members. Any resident of Molokai who is of Filipino descent and wishes to join may email Alice Cabael Kaahanui at molokai.bred@gmail.com for an application. Applicants must attend one of KFA’s quarterly meetings to be considered for membership.

The Kaunakakai Filipino Association was founded more than 60 years ago to provide community service to the Molokai community. Its main objective is to provide financial assistance to Filipino families upon death of a family member.…

Disappointing News for Football Season

Molokai High 8-Man Football held their first Green and White scrimmage last Friday afternoon.

Head Coach Mike Kahale and his staff and players were happy to be out on the field again. 

“It was an exciting scrimmage and a great opportunity for our boys to play at ‘game’ speed and intensity,” he said. “It was a defensive battle with Team White prevailing in a 8-6 victory.”

Nakoa Orlando scored on an outside run for Team Green and Clarence Tanabe caught a long touchdown pass from Angelo Duvachelle for Team White.

Kahale was hoping for some Maui Interscholastic League games after 19 months of no games, but got some disappointing news. …

Home Wins for Girls Volleyball

The Lady Farmers volleyball team got their first wins of the season last weekend while hosting St. Anthony at the Barn. 

Last Friday, Molokai took the victory over St. Anthony 3-0 in three sets, 25-8, 25-6 and 25-10. Molokai’s Lia-Chae Meyer had 10 kills, Jordyn McCutcheon had nine kills and Daisci Burrows added 29 assists. 

On Saturday, the two teams faced off again, with the Lady Farmers again taking the win 3-0, with set scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-7. Meyer had 11 kills, McCutcheon added another nine kills and Burrows came in with 28 assists. …

New ‘Ukulele Lending Program

Attend a free online event on Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. with ‘ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro in launching a new ‘ukulele lending collection at the Molokai Public Library! 

The event will include live performances with guest musicians Jon Yamasato, Herb Ohta, Jr., and Molokai’s own Jeremiah Kahuakai Kaholoaa.  In addition, Alice Kaahanui, Executive Director of the Molokai Arts Center, will speak about her organization and the programs offered for all ages.
