Cadaver Dog Joins Search for Missing Woman

Thursday, September 16th, 2021

By Catherine Cluett Pactol

The search continues for Gianina Reid, a 25-year-old woman who disappeared at Pala’au State Park on June 24 – now with police again taking the lead and community volunteer searchers “standing down.” Last Friday, police brought in a cadaver dog from the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency to search the Kalaupapa lookout area. Though the area had been extensively scoured by police and volunteers in the past, this was the first time a trained dog had been brought on the case.

“There have been eye witness reports and other evidence leading away from this area but recent findings have brought us back here,” said Molokai police detective Kyle “Ikaika” Bishaw-Juario.…

Molokai had nine new COVID-19 cases last week, according to the Dept. of Health as of Sunday’s data – two each last Wednesday and Thursday, and five new cases last Friday. Statewide, the average daily case count over the last week has been 604.

A Molokai High School employee was among those to test positive last week.

“Our school is taking the recommended precautions to ensure the safety of our staff and community, including notifying potential close contacts, closing and disinfecting impacted areas, sharing case information with the DOH and coordinating next steps with the Department’s COVID-19 Core Response Team,” wrote MHS Principal Katina Soares in a letter to the school community.…

Blood Quantum Change ‘Nail in the Coffin’

Wednesday, September 8th, 2021

In response to your excellent reporting “Congressman Kahele Visits Molokai” in the Aug. 25 issue.

The need for changes of our Abbott and Costello government begins with a restitution that releases the “native Hawaiians” from our longtime policy as wards of this crooked state!

There is no such law, at both levels, which promotes the “rehabilitation” nor advocates “the betterment of the conditions” on behalf of the 1/32 blood quantum Hawaiian.

The introduction in the changing of the blood quantum requirement in order to inherit Hawaiian Homes Land falls in line with Hawaii’s latest scam, Act 80, which reduces the successorship qualification of a lease’s spouse, children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, etc.,…

International Aloha

Wednesday, September 8th, 2021

Let’s all hold our hands together on Molokai, in our mind, and feel the positive energy, spirit of our international aloha. Keep our cultures strong and keep our life strong, healthy and safe with this deadly disease. Think about the younger generations of life, keep them safe and all of us. It’s a very important mission, purpose and reason for our adults, parents, to protect ourselves and our younger generations of life.

Don’t ever say, “I wish I did that.” Wishes die a long time ago – yesterday, today, tomorrow, every day. Say, “I’m so happy I did that.” I believe that will help all of our lives.…

Heartfelt Condolences

Wednesday, September 8th, 2021

I am writing this as a means to communicate our heartfelt condolences to Anakala Pilipo, Greg and family on the passing of Dianna.

We came to Molokai for the first time six years ago, fell in love with the island but especially the people. They have brought us back year after year until COVID grounded us. We miss so many friends there and it is especially hard to lose a dear soul so far away.

We always went to Halawa every year and we felt a real bond with the Solatarios — I blew conch with Greg and had some nice moments with the family beyond the usual tourist visit.…

80 Businesses Supplied with PPE

By Catherine Cluett Pactol

Two, 40-foot containers of personal protective equipment (PPE) was distributed by volunteers last Wednesday to about 80 local businesses and organizations. The PPE came to Molokai from the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, organized by Molokai dentist Boki Chung.

Thirty-eight pallets stacked high with masks, disinfectants, gloves, face shields, hand sanitizer, gowns and other items were sorted by county employees with the assistance of Stacy Helm Crivello, along with community volunteers.

Chung said the Maui County Dental Society originally reached out to her regarding PPE distribution earmarked for dentists but after speaking with HiEMA, Chung was able to coordinate for any Molokai business in need. …

Volunteers Search for Missing Woman

By Catherine Cluett Pactol

More than two dozen community members gathered last Saturday to search areas surrounding Pala’au State Park for Gianina Reid, a woman who has been missing since June 24. She was last seen at the Kalaupapa lookout parking lot, where she abandoned her car and belongings and presumably fled on foot after hitting the park caretaker with her vehicle. Though diagnosed with bipolar disorder and known on Molokai for unusual behavior, the circumstances and reasons behind her disappearance remain a mystery. Friends and family haven’t heard from her and there have been no confirmed sightings of Reid since June 24.  …

A Year on Molokai

Wednesday, September 1st, 2021

As a 74-year-old I treasure the memories of past lives, one of which was a lifetime spent on Molokai in one year. It was 1982 and I had lost my job in Washington state due to an economic downturn. I traveled to Koloa on Kauai and after working and living there for a month, I recalled a friend-of-a-friend had a charter sailboat business on Molokai and said he would take me out, so I took the next plane to the Molokai airport. I remember it was difficult to find a ride to Kaunakakai so thankfully most of my walk was downhill.…
