Molokai Paniolo Heritage Festival & Rodeo

A full-day rodeo festival last Saturday in Hoʻolehua attended by hundreds of people celebrated the paniolo culture that is still alive and thriving on Molokai. 

“This is the Molokai Heritage Rodeo. Today we are just coming together to rodeo and have fun, and share a little bit about the paniolo heritage,” Cheyanne Keliihoomalu said. “We also honored two of our very dear paniolo who just passed away; Uncle Vernon DeMello and Uncle Clifford Dudoit.”

The festival opened at 8 a.m., but the rodeo events began at noon and lasted way past 4 p.m. Seventy-three paniolo, including 17 from other islands, from little keiki to kupuna competed in 16 categories.…

Bennett Pottery Annual Show and Sale

Dan Bennett of Bennett Pottery will present his Annual Show and Sale open house from Monday, Nov. 24 to Monday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at his Kalaʻe Studio. 

The show will feature finely crafted high-fired functional stoneware and porcelain — items made for home and garden use, such as mugs, bowls, plates and platters, planters, salt jars, soap dispensers, sponge holders, tea pots, and much more. 

New items this year include pizza stones, sushi platters, and numerous casseroles. The work for sale is durable for daily use, and safe to put in the oven, dishwasher and microwave. …

Edwina Holt Cacoulidis

Edwina Holt Cacoulidis, 90, of Kaluaʻaha, Molokai passed away on Oct. 21, 2025 at Kuakini Hospital. She is survived by her sister Leatrice H. Scales of Kahului, Maui, son-in-law Darryl Dudoit, granddaughter Darryl-Lynn Dudoit of Kapolei, HI, and many nephews, nieces who loved her. She is predeceased by her husband Louis J. Cacoulidis and daughter Jolenta L. Friel Dudoit, parents Eddie Howard and Annie Apo Holt. Siblings; Eddie, Harry, Annie, Adeline, Emma, May, Owen and Sarah.

She grew up in Kaimuki graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1952. In 1961 she married and moved to Molokai where it became her home till her passing.…

November, December Ace Winners

The Hui O Kukui Golf Club awards two Ace winners in the month of November each year to set the field of 12 for the Ace of Aces in December. And the winners are Billy “Musubi” Moore for November and Rodney “Hot Rod” Reyes for December. 

Moore, one of the awesome senior golfers of Molokai and a gentleman extraordinaire, shot 56–52 for a gross total of 108 and with his 36 handicap his net 66 got him the November victory.

Reyes, one of Molokai’s professional golfers and one of many who always gives back to our beautiful golf course, shot 44–42 for a gross total of 86 and with his 17 handicap his net 69 got him the December Ace. …

As the holiday season fast approaches, a relatively young market on Molokai stands out. It’s a place where you can find unique locally made gifts, but it has also become a hub for the community to gather while enjoying live music and good food.

12th Annual Floating Lantern Ceremony

Molokai residents once again honored their departed loved ones in a touching ceremony on Kaunakakai’s shoreline. A couple hundred people attended the 12th Annual Floating Lantern Ceremony to release wooden and paper lanterns on the ocean Saturday evening in memory of their family and friends who have passed away.

“We invite everyone that wants to come decorate a lantern to honor their loved ones that have died,” event coordinator Barbara Helm said. “We’re all together in this to support each other, and we’re not alone.”

The lantern ceremony has become an annual tradition on Molokai since it was first held on the island in 2014.…

Molokai Community Does Great Job in Wildfire Preparedness Efforts

Look what Molokai Communities accomplished in 2025 with technical and financial support from the Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization’s Firewise Communities Program, funded through a grant from the American Red Cross. 

Nāʻiwa removed one acre of dry brush and shrub to clear their main access roadway in case of evacuations. Twelve families assisted in removing over 20 cubic yards of flammable vegetation, consisting mostly of invasive haole koa. 

Kalamaʻula cleared over 200 cubic yards and contributed 100 hours of volunteer work to reduce the risk of wildfire for 124 homes, eight churches, seven businesses, and two preschools. 

Paniolo Hale maintained a fire apparatus road that doubles as a fire break and removed wildfire hazards.…

Established in 1952, the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to perpetuating the rich heritage of Hawaiian canoe racing.

OHCRA is the organizer of the Nā Wahine O Ke Kai and Molokai Hoe (Molokai to Oahu) canoe races across the Kaiwi Channel. Both events are regarded as among the most famous and most challenging outrigger canoe events in the world. More than 2,000 canoe paddlers from around the globe come to compete in the annual 41-mile event from Hale O Lono Harbor on Molokai to Waikiki Beach on Oahu.…
