Molokai Art on Display at Statewide Exhibit

Hawaii Craftsmen News Release 

Twelve Molokai artists entered a total of 48 entries into the Hawaii Craftsmen 2021 Annual State Exhibition. Of the 48 entries, nine works were accepted. This year, the competition was very stiff as there were a total of 551 entries statewide, submitted by 195 artists, and of the 551 entries, only 20 percent of the works, or 122 pieces, could be juried in.

The Molokai Artists whose works were juried in are: Kim Markham (three pieces were accepted), Patti Golebieski (one), Carol Rocha (one), Dan Bennett (two), Arabella Ark (one), and Terry Klerlein who collaborated with Kim Markham (one).…

Molokai Tourism Meeting Postponed

HTA News Release

The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) and Maui Visitors and Convention Bureau (MVCB) are postponing the Destination Management Action Plan (DMAP) Meetings for the island of Molokai. Originally planned for Friday, Nov. 12, the virtual community meetings for Molokai residents will be rescheduled to a later date.

The community meetings for Maui and Lanai will continue as planned, on Tuesday, Nov. 2 for Maui and Tuesday, Nov. 9 for Lanai. 

In these virtual, interactive community meetings, tourism leaders will provide island updates specific to each island in a process that serves as a guide to rebuild, redefine and reset the direction of tourism on the respective islands.…

We all enjoy the beauty of our Molokai beach, ocean land for survival of our life in this beautiful Earth we call home. Dwindling Services

We, the people of Molokai, used to have a ferry that traveled to/from Maui twice daily, and we used to have services from three different airlines.  However, as of February 2021, off-island travel for family visits, doctors’ appointments, medical treatments, or to conduct business or shopping (not only for tourists) means to fly Mokulele Airlines/Southern Airways, only.  Except for an occasional mishap we basically were satisfied with Mokulele’s service.

However, our 20-month-old grandson and his parents were here visiting this past weekend from Oahu (a quick two-day visit and vacay).  Their return flight was delayed 36 hours. The airport was full of passengers, and I’m sure each have their own story to tell. …

Her Majesty The Queen
have had to say
today
as drone pilots train to play
God, absent
from the sky…

This is America?
Sorry,
that is a lie.

This is stolen land occupied by
uniformed women and men
with misguided aims and pride
drinking Mai Tai’s and hi-
jacking waves after nine-to-five’s
spent learning from hawks
just how to fly
wearing aloha shirts
never asking why
life is blurring
into a video game.

So, what would Lili’uokalani,
Her Majesty The Queen
have had to say
if she were alive today
if not
“SHAME”
as drone strikes continue
to kill and to maim
civilians
half a world
away
in the name of the same
people who came to her palace
locked her up
stole her kingdom and her crown
saying she’s the one to blame
because white always
thinks might makes right
and she was brown
just like those beautiful souls
in the crosshairs of the reaper
drones today
half a world away
from the pilots here in Hawaii Nei

Girls Volleyball Split Weekend

The Molokai Lady Farmers Girls Volleyball team earned a split with the Hana Lady Dragons last weekend in Hana. Hana High School’s Lady Dragons (5-1) won 3-2 in a tough five-set match on Friday night, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-27 and 15-12. On Saturday, Molokai (3-3) got the win 3-1 in four sets, 25-14, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-22.

Head Coach Mahea Rawlins was happy with her team’s play. 

“Our girls experienced a great challenge in reaching five sets on Friday night,” she said. “Despite all the adversities, they still fought to the end. Although we came up short on Friday, to me we won in our own way.…

If you care about using our coastal roads, surfing, eating kole, ʻoio, limu, and going to the grocery stores in Kaunakakai, sea level rise affects you!

The sea level is expected to rise approximately 4.07 feet in Hawaii before the end of 2100 if we continue to operate business as usual. Large parts of Kaunakakai town will be flooded with seawater, including major infrastructure. Sust’ainable Molokai is leading the planning process to ensure that our community is prepared to adapt to this already occurring and ongoing change. Coastal communities and waterfront property owners may need to start new seawall construction projects and look for equipment like a bobcat rental to prepare for the rising sea level.…
