Business Conference Builds Entrepreneurs’ Toolbelt

From those with just a dream of a business to thriving entrepreneurs, last Wednesday’s annual Molokai Business Conference offered a learning opportunity for everyone. 

“It was a great turnout; we had business leaders, people interested in starting a business, we had people from the nonprofit sector, private and commercial sectors, we had bankers,” said Tylor Tanaka, small business specialist at Maui County’s Kuha’o Business Center on Molokai, which organized the conference.

A hybrid model brought classes both in person at the UH Maui College Molokai campus as well as virtually by Zoom for those who couldn’t be there, drawing more than 50 participants.…

Fall Sports Primed for ‘Exciting’ Season

The school year has started and sports are back in full swing at Molokai High School. This year will be

filled with excitement, as seniors’ last regular scheduled season of sports was during their freshman year.

COVID-19 may have put a bump on the sports schedule for the last two years, but it didn’t put a bump on

students’ spirit towards playing for Molokai High. 

“We are super excited getting fall sports underway,” said MHS Athletic Director Lee DeRouin. “We offer sideline cheer, eight-man football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls air riflery.” …

Molokai Paddlers Win Silver at States

Molokai wahine paddlers from Wa’akapaemua Canoe Club’s age 65 crew took second place at last Saturday’s state regatta on Oahu. Camie Kimball, Annette English, Penny Martin, Stef Bush, Choppie Kalama and Crystal Egusa, coached by Jerome Kalama, earned their silver medal with a time of 4:41.68 in the half mile sprint event. 

They were joined at the state regatta by the Wa’akapaemua 70s crew, who finished fourth in their event, as well as youth crews who competed. The girls 12 team finished fifth place, the boys 12 finished ninth, the mixed boys and girls 12 came in fifth, boys 13 crossed 10th, boys 14 finished 14th, and the boys 15 crew came in 10th. …

Dispatch Welcomes New Intern

We are excited that Sage Yamashita, a senior at Molokai High School, will be interning with The Molokai Dispatch. During her internship, Sage will help provide news coverage of community events and MHS sports through photography and reporting. She will also gain hands-on experience with all aspects of weekly newspaper operation over the next semester. 

Sage’s parents are Melinda and Matt Yamashita, and after graduation, she plans to study marketing. 

“I’m starting my senior year and I’m using this year as a starting point to learn some new skills, get out into the world, and prepare myself for college,” she said.…

Hoʻolehua Tree Trimming This Week

DHHL News Release 

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) and County of Maui Highways Division will conduct tree trimming work on Kolea Ave in Ho‘olehua, Molokai, beginning Monday, Aug. 8 through this week.

The tree trimming service will be on-site and working within the roadway from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with temporary traffic redirections and elevated noise levels during the scheduled work interval.

The work is expected to be completed by Aug. 12, weather permitting. DHHL lessees impacted by the work in the area have been notified via USPS mail of the work and have been asked to remove any personal property, including vehicles, between Kolea Avenue and their homestead lots.…

Longtime Molokai Middle School science teacher Scott Hemenway is the August Ace for the Hui O Kukui Golf Club. Hemenway shot 41-38 for a gross total of 79 and with his 12 handicap his net 67 got him the victory.

Mahalo to the staff and management of Iconic Ironwood Hill Golf Course for perpetuating the game of golf on Molokai.…

Good Samaritan

On Aug. 22, I left a bank bag containing a deposit slip and a large cash deposit on the top of my car. This was not a smart thing to do, as I forgot it and drove off. The bag fell off on the side of the road. After searching, to no avail, I assumed that all was lost, with the complication that the money was not mine.  As it turned out, a good Samaritan found the bag and turned it into the police department intact. Through the deposit slip, the police were able to return it to its owner. 

As the good Samaritan did not provide a name, I feel that it is appropriate for me to thank the whole community of Molokai for fostering such an atmosphere of aloha. …

Last Chance to Vote

If you haven’t already cast your ballot, there’s still time! This Saturday, Aug. 13 is the last chance to vote in the primary election. If you received a ballot in the mail and haven’t postmarked it yet, it won’t arrive in time to count now so you can drop it off in person at the Voter Service Center at Mitchell Pauole Center. You can also vote electronically through machine there or register to vote same day so you can still vote even if you’ve never done it before.

Voter Service Center hours this week are 8 a.m.…

Misaki’s Celebrates a Century in Business

One of Molokai’s iconic and longest-standing stores celebrates 100 years in business this month. From a tiny candy store in the present-day RWH Chen Building in downtown Kaunakakai to one of Molokai’s largest grocery stores, Misaki’s Grocery and Dry Goods has been vital to island life and economy for a century. 

“For most of us, it’s just something we do — it’s our life. Time just passes by so fast,” reflected General Manager Kevin Misaki, whose grandparents founded the business. He “practically lived” in the store growing up, and so did his kids.

And for the Molokai community, it feels like the store has always been here for their ‘ohana. …

Molokai Paddlers Race at States, World Sprints

Molokai paddlers are representing the island at the state level as well as internationally this month. Six keiki crews and two wahine masters crews are racing at the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championships this Saturday, Aug. 6, held at Oahu’s Ke’ehi Lagoon. The following day, three of Molokai’s elite paddlers, Penny Martin, Camie Kimball and Torrey Goodman, will leave for London, England, where they will compete in the International Va’a Federation World Sprint Championship. Sports fans who want the get latest sports development may check international sports updates online.

Hosted by a different country around the world every two years, the World Sprints represent the highest level of outrigger canoe paddlers globally.…
