More Bovine TB Prompts Island-wide Animal Quarantine

By Catherine Cluett Pactol | Editor

Recent detections of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) on Molokai has prompted the state Dept. of Agriculture to issue an immediate, island-wide quarantine order restricting the movement of all ungulate animals except horses to prevent further spread of the disease. Between June 2021 and March 2022, the HDOA issued quarantine orders on six infected herds in the areas of central and west Molokai.…

The property, located just east of Kilohana School on the mauka side of the highway, is a three-bedroom home on nearly 11,000 square feet of land that will enable the Dept. of Fire and Public Safety to house two firefighters and an office, according to Maui County.

“The current firefighters’ quarters are beyond repair,” said Maui Fire Chief Bradford Ventura. “Housing our firefighters at this newly acquired property will allow our department to maintain emergency-response times within 30 minutes for the 1,500 residents of Puko`o District in East Molokai.”…

The ‘ohana of Moses Soo Chun Kamana’o’i’o Kim, Jr., (Uncle Moke/Kumu Kim) extends a heartfelt mahalo to the Molokai community for their love and kokua. He was born on April 26, 1945 and passed away a year ago, on April 17, 2021.

Uncle traveled, lived, and worked in many places in his life, but he loved living, teaching, and serving on Molokai for 35 years the most. He had endless aloha for this island, especially the keiki. He enjoyed coaching and mentoring students during his time Molokaii High and Intermediate, and on his homestead, Na Mala o Hana Kupono, which served as a home for continued Native Hawaiian aina-based education.…

Wednesday, April 13th, 2022

As we approach the first anniversary of Uncle Moke Kim’s death on April 17, please join me in reflecting on his words from an interview he gave years ago:

We want to be independent, we want to be self-sustaining, we want to be sovereign. Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘Every household, take care of yourself first.…
