William KCL Puleloa

William (Bill) KCL Puleloa was born to Amy Sau Lan Hee and “Jack” Mun Lee in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, on March 6th, 1943. When he was five years old, Bill’s mother passed away and he eventually settled under the loving care of his mother’s sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Francis Yim. Throughout his childhood, Bill learned much of his Hawaiian heritage from his maternal grandmother, Isabella Kakainahoe Puleloa, and at age 21 finally fulfilled her request to change his last name to her own: Puleloa.

Gorilla Ogo Be Gone

Nonprofits Sust’ainable Molokai and Sustainable Coastlines partnered together with community volunteers for a cleanup of invasive gorilla ogo seaweed at Kaunakakai Wharf last Saturday. Growing in thick mats, gorilla ogo chokes out native limu species, as well as killing coral and other sea life. 

The effort brought about two dozen people to help with the cleanup. They identified the invasive limu, separated it from any native species growing with it, and bagged it for removal. They joined a growing number of regular volunteer efforts that have been successful in reducing the volume of ogo around the wharf area, which sometimes collects along the shoreline in massive quantities. …

Farmers Take First Season Win

The Molokai Farmers Football team put on an excellent game this weekend against Lanai Pinelads. Taking the win at 41-6, the Farmers took the start to the season with the supporting community and spirit of the cheerleaders right beside them. Head Coach Mike Kahale with his staff and players worked hard to start the season strong. 

Reflecting on the game, Kahale was pleased with the effort. He said it feels like years ago since the last real season of football, with only the one 11-man controlled scrimmage with the Na Ali’i of King Kekaulike High School in between.…

Residents Get Trained in Suicide Prevention

 MEO News Release 

Twenty Molokai residents learned to be suicide prevention gatekeepers in training sessions last Tuesday and Wednesday conducted by Maui Economic Opportunity Youth Services.

The four sessions, held over the two days at MEO’s Kaunakakai office, covered recognition of the warning signs of suicide, how to provide support to those contemplating suicide and connecting them to services.  The content was patterned after suicide prevention sessions held at Molokai High and Middle schools in April.

The training sessions were a follow up to a town hall on suicide prevention held on July 27.  Some at the town hall were interested in the program taught in the schools.…

Do you know elderly people, retired family members, aunties and uncles on Molokai who have been living on a fixed income? Until recently they’ve mostly made things work out on their small pension, but now many feel so overwhelmed and are in despair. Over the last couple of years, the financial burden and life for this cohort of people has gotten especially hard.

The other day I ran into Aunty P. We both had a little time, so we sat down under a monkey pod tree and talked story. The last six months have gotten really hard for her.…

It was 7:30 a.m. as it arrived at the outer fringes of the inner harbor. By 8 a.m. it was being nudged closer to the pier by two tugboats and at 8:30 a.m., it had nestled close to the dock. Then at 9 a.m., the action began for real. It had been one of the earliest dockings of the Young Brothers barge during my 10 years here in Kalaupapa.

As I sat on my front porch, the crew were unloading empty shipping containers off the barge. Old friend Lionel from Hawaii Island stopped by to say hello and told me that these containers would be filled with metal and wood scraps before going back on the barge.…

The Molokai Humane Society will be having a spay and neuter clinic in the near future so please be on the lookout for those announcements/flyers. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to help in controlling the pet population on our island. Another service available to pet owners is microchipping. Microchipping helps us safely reunite pets with their families when they manage to escape and go holoholo. 

As a reminder, canines are required by law to be licensed. Dog licenses may be obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles. We understand times are hard and money is tight, discounts on licenses are available with proof that your canine is spayed and neutered. …

Dispatch Wins 5 Journalism Awards

At last week’s Society of Professional Journalism Hawaii Chapter Excellence in Journalism Awards, The Molokai Dispatch was honored with five Excellence in Journalism awards for coverage in 2021. The statewide awards are presented annually in newspaper, TV, radio and magazine categories and this year, recipients were announced via Zoom conference on Aug. 17. 

In the non-daily newspaper category for feature writing, The Molokai Dispatch Editor Catherine Cluett Pactol won first place for “Molokai’s Kakawahie: A Lost Species.” 

“Really nice story about a bird species that has gone from endangered to extinct,” the judges commented. “Engaging and well-written.”…
