Newly Graduated MD from Molokai

UH JABSOM News Release 

The University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine (UH JABSOM) recently graduated 69 doctors including many minorities as well as those from rural communities on the neighbor islands. The new crop of physicians include 16 that identify as being of Filipinx or mixed Filipinx descent, four Native Hawaiians and 10 with neighbor island roots. One is from Molokai. 

Six out of the 16 physicians of Filipinx descent participated in the UH Manoa Filgrad Ceremony, a celebration of Filipinx students’ heritage, identity and community. Four Native Hawaiian kauka ʻopio (young physicians) were honored in the Annual Kihei Ceremony sponsored by the ʻAhahui o na Kauka and JABSOM Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence.…

In collaboration with State and County agencies, Senator Lynn DeCoite is once again working to provide the public with information and resources on who to contact regarding axis deer issues.

Injured and alive deer – Deer that have been injured, for example, by vehicle strikes and are still alive pose a threat to public safety. If a live injured deer is encountered, do not approach the animal. Immediately call: 

During regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., call the Division of Forestry and Wildlife’s Maui Branch Office (DOFAW) Molokai Office at (808)553-1745.  After hours and weekends, call the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) at (808) 873- 3990 or Maui Police Department Dispatch (MPD) at (808) 244-6400. Celebrating Molokai Drug Court Successes

In observance of National Drug Court Month 2022, the Second Circuit’s Drug Court programs held graduation events on Maui and Molokai.

The seven members of Maui Drug Court’s 78th graduating class celebrated completion of the intensive program when Judge Kelsey T. Kawano closed their cases on May 19. MHS Wins Kaimana Award

For the first time in three years, the Hawaii Medical Service Association celebrated winners of the 17th annual HMSA Kaimana Awards and Scholarship Program in person at the Hawaii Convention Center. Nine local high schools and 15 exemplary college-bound students were recognized for their achievements and excellence in academics, athletics, community service, healthy activities, and sportsmanship. Molokai High School won a Kaimana Award for the first time.

Alvin K. Naehu

Alvin K. Naehu was 80 years old and called home on Aug. 23, 2021 at his residence in Kaunakakai, Molokai. He was born Oct. 6, 1940 in Ho’olehua, Molokai. 

He is pre-deceased by parents Edwin and Rosalie Naehu; siblings Hanohano Naehu-deceased, Mary Ann (Willy) Naehu Lucas-deceased, Sharon (Raymond) Naehu Kuahuia, Ardis Naehu and Cleighton Guy (Sis Sharon) Naehu. He is survived by his spouse Angelita “Angie” Oliveros Naehu; children Cheryl Gloor (Isaac-deceased), Alvin A. Naehu Jr., Jan (Emerson) Makekau, and Francis (Tatum) Naehu; 25 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at St. Damien of Molokai Church, Kaunakakai, Molokai from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m.…

Paniolo young and old tested their skills and strength in the arena last weekend in the Molokai Paniolo Heritage Rodeo King Kamehameha Celebration at the Molokai Ranch Jimmy Duvauchelle Arena in Maunaloa.  From roping to barrel racing, calf tying to keiki roping, the event brought the heat, red dust and the best of the island’s cowboys and cowgirls, showcasing a long and rich legacy of paniolo culture.

Residents Get Renewable Energy Certification

Locally-run Ho’ahu Energy Cooperative Molokai held an inaugural Clean Energy Technician Training this spring, with 14 Molokai residents graduating with certification. The five-week course covered an introduction to photovoltaic energy, with a 40 hours of hands on build time during which students received on-site experience and skills building nanogrids, or small scale solar systems. 

“The state has a goal to transition to 100 percent renewables by 2045 and Molokai still has almost the entire way to go,” said Todd Yamashita, board president of Ho’ahu Energy Coop and instructor for the course. “What we’re doing here is helping ourselves and getting ready for this transition so that it will be our Molokai people who will benefit from these jobs.…
