Molokai Paddlers Race at States, World Sprints

Molokai paddlers are representing the island at the state level as well as internationally this month. Six keiki crews and two wahine masters crews are racing at the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championships this Saturday, Aug. 6, held at Oahu’s Ke’ehi Lagoon. The following day, three of Molokai’s elite paddlers, Penny Martin, Camie Kimball and Torrey Goodman, will leave for London, England, where they will compete in the International Va’a Federation World Sprint Championship. Sports fans who want the get latest sports development may check international sports updates online.

Hosted by a different country around the world every two years, the World Sprints represent the highest level of outrigger canoe paddlers globally.…

Na’iwa Homesteaders to Benefit from OHA Grant

Four grants totalling $1.36 million were approved today by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, one of which will serve homesteaders of Na’iwa, Molokai.  

An economic stability grant of $398,000 was awarded to Hawaii Community Lending for its Native Hawaiian Owner-Builder Project which will increase the economic stability of 58 Native Hawaiians in Naʻiwa, Molokai, by establishing a culturally relevant program that will increase access to capital, credit and technical assistance for Native Hawaiians to build and own homes on Hawaiian Home Lands. Improving the construction can be achieved when using services like owner-builder defects reports. 

 While access to capital and credit is essential, the real magic lies in how those resources are used to shape sustainable homes and thriving communities.…

Suicide Prevention Town Hall

About 60 Molokai residents filled Kalaiakamanu Hou Church Hall last Wednesday evening to discuss suicide and prevention in the tight-knit community during a town hall organized by Maui Economic Opportunity’s Youth Services.

Earlier in the day, about 20 residents participated in a “Cruz Around Town” sign waving and walking through town to bring awareness to suicide prevention. The walk went from the gym to the library.

MEO Youth Services brought its suicide youth prevention program to Molokai with a $16,000 Maui County grant offered late in the fiscal year. In the spring, Youth Services staff visited Molokai High and Intermediate School to work with students on the warning signs of suicide and how to help others and themselves.…

$8.5M in Grants Available to Serve Homesteaders

If you’re part of a Molokai nonprofit serving a homestead community, you’re eligible to apply for a grant as part of $8.5 million available from the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL). The funding is earmarked for the department’s Community Development Grants Program, part of DHHL’s Native Hawaiian Development Program Plan (NHDPP).

For Fiscal Year 2023, the Hawaii State Legislature allocated $10 million in State General Funds to the NHDPP, of which $7.5 million was designated by the Hawaiian Homes Commission (HHC) to the Community Development Grants Program. The other $2.5 million was set aside by the Commission for repair and maintenance projects within the homelands.…

Bayer Science Education Grants

Molokai students may now apply for the 2022 Bayer Hawaii Science Education Fund. Since 2005, this Bayer Fund grant program has awarded over $335,000 to public schools in Hawaii for programs, tools, supplies and equipment to enhance their students’ science education. All public schools serving students at the intermediate, high school and college grade levels on the islands of Oahu, Maui and Molokai are eligible to apply.

This is the second of two grant periods this year. To be considered for the current grant period, all applications plus supporting documentation must be received by Thursday, Sept. 1.

Molokai Airport to Get $11M Improvements

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz announced that Molokai Airport and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport will receive nearly $34 million in combined funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve their runways and taxiways.

“This new federal funding will improve our airports on Molokai and Oahu, helping us rebuild runways to make them safer and last longer,” said Senator Schatz, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation and Housing.

Nearly $23 million in funding will be used to rebuild about 7,755 feet of runway and taxiway pavement at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on Oahu and $11 million in funding to strengthen 4,796 feet of runways and taxiways and 9,661 square yards of apron pavement at Molokai Airport.…

County Pool Closed Aug. 12

Maui County pool lifeguards will undergo emergency medical response re-certification training on Friday, Aug. 12, at the Cooke Memorial Pool on Molokai. The pool will close to the public while the training is ongoing.

New Plane Here, Limited Booking Available

Mokulele’s new 30-seat plane made its first landing with passengers on Molokai last week Thursday, and limited booking online is currently available at Jettly. 

The twin turboprop Saab 340, operated under Mokulele’s parent company Southern Airways, is the first of two larger aircraft the company is bringing in to primarily serve Molokai and Lanai. Mokulele Chief of Staff Keith Sisson said the second plane will mainly be a reserve aircraft but on special occasions, both may be on the flight line at the same time. 

“We are not going to publish a full schedule until the reserve plane arrives in September,” said Sisson.…

Primary Election Approaching

This week, Molokai registered voters will receive their ballots for the primary election in the mail. The deadline for your ballot to be received is Saturday, Aug. 13 so it must be postmarked in advance, or it can dropped off at the voter service center in Kaunakakai by Saturday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. To register to vote or check your status, visit elections.hawaii.gov. 

In the primary election, voters nominate the candidates who will represent each party in the general election, which will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8. When casting your primary election ballot, remember to select only one political party preference, and only vote for the candidates of your selected political party preference.…
