Local Farmer Launches Chicken Feed Experiment

Molokai is experiencing a population explosion—of laying hens. Sust’ainable Molokai’s Poultry Egg Education Project (PEEP) has already helped 35 Molokai ‘ohana get into egg production, for their own use and for sale through the Mobile Market. 

While this is a significant gain for local food self-reliance, Molokai producers are still dependent on imported chicken feed. To be truly self-sufficient, the feed will have to be produced here as well, and Molokai farmer Ehiku Arnold may have a solution. He has launched an experiment to see if laying hens can survive and thrive on feed he produces on his farm. …

There are only a few more days left to purchase tickets for the 2023 Molokai Arts Center (MAC) Soup ‘R Bowl. The 13th annual fundraiser event will be held at Lanikeha Community Center in Ho’olehua, on Saturday, March 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. 

What happens at the Soup ‘R Bowl? A ticket gains you entrance to tables lined with over 300 ceramic bowls (and a few Molokai mugs) handcrafted by artisans at the Molokai Arts Center. Molokai First Stop on Mayor’s Tour

Mayor Richard Bissen is launching Holomua Kakou to bring county government to the diverse communities that make up Maui County.

“Each community is unique, yet we are connected as one county,” Bissen said. “Our residents have busy lives with work and activities, and we appreciate the time everyone can share with us.”

Flight 583 from Honolulu to Kalaupapa was rather bumpy but we made it safely across the treacherous waters of the Ka’iwi Channel. The plane looped around the south side of Molokai island, then headed north before turning to the right and shortly thereafter preparing to land. At which, the cry went up, “This is not Kalaupapa.” Sure enough, we were about to land at Ho’olehua, the topside Molokai airport. We were not happy. We had landed at the wrong airport and it was close to sunset.

Resolving Transportation Issues

I recently wrote to Senator DeCoite and Mayor Bissen to address state and county issues regarding transportation for Molokai residents to neighbor islands. And, to kindly ask their help in finding solutions for better service.

As you are aware, Molokai no longer has a ferry offering transportation to Maui. As you are also aware, there is now only one airline, Mokulele, servicing Molokai. When the ferry went out of business, a major factor was price competition with the three airlines that served Molokai at that time. Now there is only one airline, Mokulele.

There is a serious problem with only having one method of transportation to and from Molokai. …

James Henry Lani Acasio

James Henry Lani Acasio, 74, of Aurora, Indiana, passed away Monday, Feb. 20, 2023, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born Aug. 2, 1948, in Ho’olehua, HI, son of the late Hipolito Acasio and Alice (Lani) DeMello. 

He served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. James will be fondly remembered as a loving husband and Papa.  

James is survived by his ‘ohana which include his loving spouse of 51 years Deborah (Bauer) Acasio; daughters Anela Acasio Schwier and Rachel Acasio; grandsons Zane, Jack and Owen Schwier; granddaughter Elise Bostick; siblings Walter (Kehau) Kaiama, Wilfred Demello, Jr.,…

Makahiki Worth the Wait

Molokai waited a long time for this year’s community celebration of Ka Molokai Makahiki. With the past three years cancelled during the pandemic, the event was postponed again from a torrential rainstorm in January. Finally held last weekend, the opening ceremony and cultural protocol kicked off Friday evening followed by keiki giving it their all in the games.

Moana’s Hula Halau a Labor of Love

Moana’s Hula Halau held their first show in several years two weeks ago, with standing room only at the Community Health Center. Hundreds of residents and visitors gathered for dinner and the performance under the banyan tree. Nearly 40 Molokai dancers ranging from keiki to kupuna amazed an enthusiastic crowd. They were also joined on stage by a kane group from Maui and a member of sister halau, Moana’s of Japan. 

Founded by Moana Dudoit more than 60 years ago, the halau was started by Dudoit after she returned home from college. 

“Her first intention was to do it for the family first and she started to teach hula for the family,” said Moana’s sister, Kumu Hula Raquel Dudoit, who has carried on the halau’s legacy following Moana’s death in 2013.…

New Land Designations Proposed

More Molokai state-owned lands have been proposed for re-designation as Natural Area Reserves and Forest Reserves. 

In addition to ‘Ilio Point and Waikolu Valley, which were discussed in a series of meetings last month, new areas on the East End near Pukoo and Halawa could be included in an effort to re-assign land on Molokai. Currently listed as unencumbered state land, the proposal would allow for more specific Division of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) management of the lands, as well as eliminate the risk of future development, according to Emma Yuen with DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife.  …
