Rachel Leinani Gonsalves Hussey

Rachel Leinani Gonsalves Hussey, 88, of Kamililoa, Molokai died June 11, 2010. She was born in Honolulu and is survived by sons Benjamin Amina Hussey III (Trixie) and Robert K (Lanakila) Hussey (Petroline); grandchildren Eddie Molter, Piilani Kaaloa, Brandon Hussey, Brolin Hussey, Lahela Lung, Braylin Dennis and Lahela Ann Hussey; eight great-grandchildren; and sister Lydia Maulan Joy.

Rachel attended St. Andrew’s Priory through 6th grade and graduated from Kamehameha School for Girls in 1940.  She then attended Armstrong Business College, graduating in 1942.

Rachel retired after 32 years with the State of Hawaii where she worked as a Social Services Worker and later as a dental receptionist for Dr. Robert Brath, DDS, for 20 more years of service.

Rachel is now reunited with her beloved husband Benjamin A. Hussey, Jr., formally of Molokai, and daughter Mililani Molter, formally of California.

Services will be held at Kalaiakamanu Hou Congregational Church on Saturday, June 26, 2010. Visitation at 8:00 a.m., service at 9:30 a.m. Burial to follow at the Molokai Veterans Cemetery in Ho`olehua.

Marybeth Yuen Maul

Marybeth Yuen Maul

Marybeth Yuen Maul, who grew up on Molokai, and became one of Hawaii’s pioneering women attorneys, passed away on April 23, 2010. She was 85.  Maul was one of the first women judges of Asian Pacific American ancestry in Hawaii.  She was appointed magistrate for the island of Molokai in 1957, and also served as a Molokai District Court judge for the County of Maui.  After retiring as the administrator of Kalaupapa Settlement in 1992, she had been living in Honolulu.

Maul was born in Honolulu on March 26, 1925.  During the school year, she lived with her grandparents while attending Punahou.  In the summers, she’d return to Molokai, where her father, Yun Kee Yuen, operated four grocery stores.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Maul’s parents sent her with her siblings to live in Wisconsin, where she graduated from high school.  She completed her law degree at the University of Wisconsin in 1950.

In the 50s, Maul returned to Molokai to help her father with the stores, and became treasurer of Kualapu`u Market.  She raised her two daughters on Molokai.  In 1963, Maul started Molokai’s first and only Chinese restaurant with her family, called Hop Inn.

For many years, Maul was the only attorney on the Friendly Island, often working pro bono, and counseling members of the community.

Known for her compassion for people and animals, Maul cofounded the Molokai Humane Society, assisted the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and the Girl Scouts, and served on the State Advisory Committee to the Department of Education on Title IV.

Maul is survived by her daughters, Robin Campbell and Christy Rice; four grandchildren; sisters, Lilyan Yuen Anderson and Jane Yuen Chang; brother, John “Sonny” Yuen; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, May 7, 2010 at Grace Episcopal Church in Ho`olehua, Molokai.  Visitation will be from 1 - 2:30 p.m. Services will follow.

Scott Kaohu Furtado Jr.

Scott Kaohu Furtado Jr., 24, of Kualapu`u, died on March 30, 2010 in Kaunakakai. He was born November 13, 1985 in Honolulu. He is survived by his parents Scott Kaohu Furtado Sr. and Margaret Aulani Horner Furtado of Honolulu; sister Kaleinani Frances Furtado of Honolulu, grandmother Mary Horner of Kaunakakai, and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends called on April 2, 2010, at 10 a.m. with service follwing at 12 noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kalamaula. Burial followed at the Kanakaloloa Cemetery in Ho`olehua.

Fiette Kahaumelani Farias

Fiette Kahaumelani Farias passed away February 8, 2010, at home on Molokai. Services were held at Kainalu on Molokai to celebrate her life. A sending off by boat to scatter her ashes was done in the waters of Kainalu, followed by a farewell song of Aloha Oe.
A gratitude of appreciation goes out to all the family and friends of Fiette, who gave of themselves generously. Thank you to the Soka Gakkai International USA/Buddhist Lay Organization. The gospel of the Alpha and the Omega Church, and Ierusalema Pomaikai Church.

Alejandro Alcos Briones, 90, of Hoolehua, Molokai, died on February 24, 2010, at his home. He was born February 15, 1920 in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. He is survived by his sons, Manuel Briones of Hoolehua, Daniel (Roberta) Briones of Waianae, Oahu; daughters Angelita (Charles) Uahinui of Kaunakakai, Carol Anamizu of Hoolehua, Cynthia (Donald) Guttierres of Kaunakakai, Sharleen (Benjamin) Crisostomo of Kahuku, Oahu, Guylean (Harry) Newman of Kahikinui, Maui, Lauralee Niihau of Kona; 33 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services were held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Lanikeha Community Center in Hoolehua, Molokai. Burial followed at Kanakaloloa cemetery in Hoolehua.

Shawn Loann Vernon

Shawn Loann Vernon, 63, of Ualapue Molokai died February 17, 2010 in her home in Ualapue. She was born February 6, 1947 in Jersey City, New Jersey. She is survived by sons Luther “Dan” (Holly) Hemme of Anchorage, Alaska, Scott Herald of Lockport, New York, and two grandchildren, Brian and Kirsten. Friends gathered at a memorial service at noon on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Wavecrest Condominium cabana in Ualapue, Molokai. Scattering of her ashes followed.

Jean Chizuko Akiyama, formerly of Kaunakakai, died on February 8, 2010 in Lihue, Kauai, at age 88. She is survived by her sons, Melvyn H. Akiyama (Patricia), Rodney M. Akiyama (Joy); daughter Karen M. Alba (Ronald); brother Richard H. Hazama (Dorothy); sister Ethel M. Yamane; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Private services were held on Feb. 17 in Kauai.

Angleline Akala Cordoban Lyons, more affectionately known as Aunty Angie, died at the age of 77. She was surrounded by her loved ones when she passed away at her home on February 14, 2010. Born May 16, 1932, she was a retired DAGS employee of the State of Hawaii. She is survived by her sons Ralph (Linda) Cordoban of Salt Lake, O’ahu, Henry (Ola) Isabel of Kohala, Hawaii; daughters Kanani (Warren) Adolpho & Joenell (Chris) Mangca, all of Kaunakakai, Molokai, Loretta (Chief) Whitaker, Leialoha (Allan) Kondo of Kohala, Hawaii; step-daughter Beverly Lyons of Mililani, O’ahu; and hanai children Leilani Valenzuela, Leimomi Jules, Leroy Jules and Anna English. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Kalaikamanu Hou Hall at 9 a.m.

She is survived by her daughters, Trudi Kahumoku and Gail Omoto; brother Osamu Murakami; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Memorial services were held on Februray 19, 2010, at Kaunakakai Baptist Church. Visitation was at 9 a.m., and the service followed at 10 a.m.
