Barney Perlado

Barney Perlado of Molokai died on March 1, 2011, at age 83. He was born Aug. 27, 1927 in Haiku, Maui, and was a retired electronics technician for Ling Techno Volt in Anaheim, Calif. and a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by brothers Tony Toledo of California and Rudy Toledo of Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on May 21, 2011 from 8-9:45 a.m. at Home Pumehana main hall in Kaunakakai.

Rachel Talon

Rachel Lahela Waialeale Talon, of Maunaloa, (recently resided in Waipio, Oahu) was surrounded by love as she peacefully went with the Lord on March 26, 2011 at the Pali Momi Medical Center in Honolulu, at age 90.  Born February 17, 1921 in Kapa`a, Kauai, she was a pineapple field worker for Libby’s, McNeil and Dole.  She also worked as a senior companion on Molokai.  Known to many for her gift of lomilomi and her hands of healing, she is a blessing to all those who knew her.

She is survived by son Joseph (Betsy) Talon of Lahaina; daughters Earlene (Henry, Sr.) Lindo of Waiehu, Maui, Talia (Milo) Cenal of Waipio, Oahu and Mich`lae Waialeale of Waipio, Oahu; 22 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Aduca Talon; daughters Janette Low and Clara (Low) Kaahanui; son James Low and great grand-daughter Kehaukauiwehiwehionalani Mawae Low.

Celebration of our tutu’s life will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Family viewing 7 – 8 a.m., public viewing 8 – 10:45 a.m., service starts at 11 a.m.; casual attire.  Burial to follow at Maunaloa Cemetery. 

John “Johnny” Sabas

John “Johnny” Sabas of Molokai died on March 17, 2011 at the Molokai General Hospital, at age 95. He was born Feb. 21, 1916 in Honolulu; he attended Lili`uokalani Elementary and McKinley High School. Johnny was raised in the Salvation Army Homes at Manoa and Kaimuki; he never knew any relatives on his side.

Johnny was a respected athlete, playing volleyball, basketball and football in the old Honolulu leagues. He played in the Hawaii Professional Football League and on town teams such as the Kaka`ako Sons, Polar Bears, Hawaiian Pine and Chinese Dragons. One of his football coaches was former Mayor Neil Blaisdell. John enjoyed music, reading and throw-net fishing.

He was married to Clara Ku`ualoha (Brito) for nearly 65 years. They were inseparable, and up until last year could often be seen walking hand-in-hand in Kaunakakai town. Together they raised four children, all college graduates: John (Jennifer), Rinda (Frank), Michael, and Barry (Mary). He is also survived by eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

John was proud of his service to country and community. He spent over 29 years with the Molokai Police Department, and served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard. He was a good and loving man.

Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. and services from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 16 at Kalaniana`ole Hall. Lunch and talk story to follow, no flowers or wreaths, casual attire. Molokai Mortuary arranged crematory services. Services will be performed by the Reverend Uncle Jimmy Duvauchelle.
