Albert Pu

Albert “Pake” Clyde Pu of Ho`olehua, Molokai, passed away on June 18, 2011 at the age of 60. Albert was born August 21, 1950 in Hana, Maui and raised on the east end of Molokai. Albert served as a United States Marine in Vietnam and received an Honorable Discharge as a Corporal (E-4) in July 1974. He worked for the National Park Service in Kalaupapa for 23 years and retired as Chief of Maintenance. Albert was an active member of the Kalaupapa Lions Club, the Veteran’s Club of Molokai and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Albert loved cooking, Hawaiian music, action movies and all his kitties and three doggies.

Philip Benedito

Philip Fujita Benedito of Kaunakakai, died May 20, 2011 in Honolulu at age 81. He was born Jan. 18, 1930 in Waimanalo, and was a retired National Security Technologies maintenance technician and U.S. Army veteran in the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Emelia; son Philip Jr.; daughters Phillynn Benedito-Haas and Phyllis Benedito-Felipe; brothers Carlos Roy and Leocadio; sisters Rosalina Omalsa, Lourdes Fujimoto, Caroline Kawano, Jeanette Arellano, Elenita Keanini, Beatrice Abadilla and Adele Gorospe; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be on June 4, 2011 at Kalanianaole Hall at 8 a.m., followed by eulogy at 9:45 a.m. and mass at 10 a.m. Flowers welcome; aloha attire. Arrangements by Borthwick Mortuary.

Larry McCutcheon

Larry W. McCutcheon died on May 20, 2011 in his home in Maunaloa, at age 60. He was born April 25, 1951 in Connellsville, Penn. He moved to Hawaii in February 1976. He was a 1969 graduate of Connellsville Area High School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. We all knew Larry as a Steelers fan, a Nascar fan and enjoyed riding his Harley Sportster.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Edna McCutcheon, and sister Joyce Ann McCutcheon, all of Connellsville. He is survived by his wife Terri (Espaniola) McCutcheon; son Mike (Tasha) McCutcheon; daughters Cheryl McCutcheon, Cyndi (Braj) McCutcheon, and Chrissy (Kolu) McCutcheon; and 13 grandchildren, Brayden, Alyssa, Shaelyn, Jordyn, Jerone, Keith, Jarryn, Brittney, Ehukai, Sydney, Sairus, Shailiah and Noah.

Larry was a loving husband, a proud dad, a great papa; he enjoyed the company of his brothers and sisters-in-law and his many nieces and nephews, and was a friend to all.

Friends called on May 3, 2011 at St. Vincent Ferrer, Maunaloa, before his final resting place at the Molokai Veterans Cemetery in Ho`olehua.

Celebration of Life

On Feb. 2, 2011, Love`i Ka`aha`aina McGuire-Guerrero entered this world as a blessing to parents Matthew McGuire, Julia Guerrero and bit tita Kailana McGuire-Guerrero. On May 8, 2011, “Mother’s Day,” our love baby was in the hands of God and entered into the gates of heaven. She will always live in our hearts and never be forgotten. Love`i is a miracle to our family. She has impacted many lives with her big smile, chubby cheeks and love.

Our beloved baby girl is survived by parents, sister; grandparents Dollyann Guerrero, Frank Guerrero, Manono Rapanot, Stanley Rapanot and David Auld; great-grandmother Susan Taylor; and many aunties, uncles, cousins and friends.

Services will be held at the Ka Hale Laa O Iruselema Hou Church in Kalamaula on May 21, 2011, 7 a.m. family visitation, 8 a.m. public visitation and 9:30 a.m. service.

Louise Ku

Louise P. Ku of Ho`olehua passed away at the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu on May 9, 2011. “Sistah” as most people know her was a 1958 graduate of the Molokai High School.

She is survived by two brothers, William “Honeyboy” (Maria) Ku and Testa (Punani) Ku; sister Clara “Sweetheart” Ku; and two hanai brothers, Paul (Sweetie) Suyat and Albert (Lucy) Pu.

Friends are welcome at Lanikeha on June 4, 2011 beginning at 8 a.m., with service at 11 a.m.

Charles Pelekane

Charles Pelekane of Kapaakea died on May 10, 2011 in his home in Kapaakea, at age 81. He was born Jan. 28, 1930 in Kona.

He is survived by his wife Louise Pelekane of Kapaakea; sons Charles Pelekane Jr of Kapaakea and Josephe (April) Pelekane of Kalamaula; daughters Leola (Richard) Dowling of Kalamaula, Lana Pelekane of Kahului, Charlene (Frank) Kekino of Kamalo, Doreen (Kalani) Waikiki of Wailuku, Oriana (Harry) White of Waimanalo; brother Francis Pelekane of Hilo; 21 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call on May 19, 2011 from 9 a.m. with service at 10 a.m. at the Kalanianaole Hall in Kalamaula, Molokai. Cremation to follow.

Barney Perlado

Barney Perlado of Molokai died on March 1, 2011, at age 83. He was born Aug. 27, 1927 in Haiku, Maui, and was a retired electronics technician for Ling Techno Volt in Anaheim, Calif. and a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by brothers Tony Toledo of California and Rudy Toledo of Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on May 21, 2011 from 8-9:45 a.m. at Home Pumehana main hall in Kaunakakai.

Lydia E. Espiritu, of Lahaina, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at age 67. She was born on February 12, 1944 in San Esteban, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Jun Espiritu; son Jerry Espiritu; daughters Miraflor (Zaldy) Velasco and Michelle (Kai) Mahuna; brother Lloyd Reyes; and four grandchildren, Mackenzie-Lee Velasco, Zamir Velasco, Angelica Manegdeg, and Mischa Mahuna.

Family and friends are invited to gather for funeral services on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Kalaniana`ole Hall. Visitation will begin 6 p.m. with a service at 8 p.m. Burial will be held 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the Kapa`akea Cemetery in Kaunakakai, Molokai.

Jan TenBruggencate

Jan K. TenBruggencate, longtime Molokai pineapple researcher and the author of a history of the Hawaiian pineapple industry, died Sunday, April 17, 2011, in Madison, Wisconsin, at age 89.

He was born March 16, 1922 in the Netherlands, and moved in 1956 to Molokai’s Libby McNeill and Libby plantation in Maunaloa, where he was an agronomist. The plantation closed in the 1970s. In later years, while living in Florida and Wisconsin, TenBruggencate consulted for the pineapple industries of Colombia, Swaziland, South Africa and other parts of the world. After his retirement, he wrote Hawaii’s Pineapple Century, the history of the Hawaiian pineapple industry.

Rachel Talon

Rachel Lahela Waialeale Talon, of Maunaloa, (recently resided in Waipio, Oahu) was surrounded by love as she peacefully went with the Lord on March 26, 2011 at the Pali Momi Medical Center in Honolulu, at age 90. Born February 17, 1921 in Kapa`a, Kauai, she was a pineapple field worker for Libby’s, McNeil and Dole. She also worked as a senior companion on Molokai. Known to many for her gift of lomilomi and her hands of healing, she is a blessing to all those who knew her.

She is survived by son Joseph (Betsy) Talon of Lahaina; daughters Earlene (Henry, Sr.) Lindo of Waiehu, Maui, Talia (Milo) Cenal of Waipio, Oahu and Mich`lae Waialeale of Waipio, Oahu; 22 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Aduca Talon; daughters Janette Low and Clara (Low) Kaahanui; son James Low and great grand-daughter Kehaukauiwehiwehionalani Mawae Low.

Celebration of our tutu’s life will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Family viewing 7 – 8 a.m., public viewing 8 – 10:45 a.m., service starts at 11 a.m.; casual attire. Burial to follow at Maunaloa Cemetery.
