Vicenta Calpito Vergara, age 87, of Kaunakakai, Molokai died on March 11, 2012 in Kaunakakai. She was born in Nagbukel, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. She is survived by sons Ed (Patti) Vergara of San Diego, Calif., Glenn (Tammy) Vergara) of Honolulu, and Arnold (Michele) Vergara of Lanai City, Lanai; daughters Aida (Alvin) Calvan of Honolulu and Irene (Carlton) Pabalan of Boulder City, CO; and 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Services:
Friends may call on Saturday, April 14, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. with Mass at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Damien Catholic Church in Kaunakakai, Molokai. Burial to follow at the Kapa`akea cemetery in Kapa`akea, Molokai.…

Teruo Nakamoto

Teruo Nakamoto, 90, of Kualapu`u, Molokai, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Haie Makua, Kahului under Hospice Care. He was born February 16, 1922 in Wailuku.

He was a retired Foreman with the Del Monte Company. He is survived by his wife Agnes M. Nakamoto, son Roland (Sharon) Nakamoto, daughters Lorraine (William) Rhyne, Gwendolyn (Donald) Wheatlake, Sherrie (Guy) Ueki, eight grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and sister Kimiko “Kay” Nakagawa.

Services over ashes are on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Kaunakakai Baptist Church, Molokai. Visitation from 9:30 to 10:30am; Service at 10:30 a.m.

Family request no flowers. Casual attire.…

Osamu Murakami, born Jan. 2, 1925, died on Nov. 21, 2011 at the age of 86. He is survived by his hanai children William Neil Puaa Sr. (deceased with surviving spouse Wahineiakawaiolaakane Puaa, Agatha Justina Puaa (Robert Poepoe Sharpe) both deceased, Marianito (Denice) Alavazo, Mary (John) Rawlins, Andres (Denise) Alavazo, Puniala (Larry) Alavazo, Doreen (Mercury) Dudoit. He is also survived by his nieces Gail (Gairett) Omoto, Trudi (Rex) Kahumoku, Cathy Ann (James) Robinson and nephews Burton Yamashiro, Clinton (Tina) Yamashiro, Norton Yamashiro and Milton Yamashiro.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, Dec. 10 at Kalaikamanu Hou Church Hall at 9 a.m.

Anita Naeole Arce of Molokai passed away on Oct. 4, 2011 at her home in Ho`olehua. She was 86. Arce was born Jan. 21, 1925 in Honolulu. She is survived by her sons Steven (Mokihana) Arce of Ho`olehua, Andrew (Kuulei) Arce of Ho`olehua and Thomas (Kali) Arce of Kalae, Molokai; daughters Sandra (Jeffery) English of Kualapu`u, Molokai, Lynn Arce of Honolulu, Gwendolyn Arce of Ho`olehua and Gwendolyn Crandall of Santa Maria, Calif.; sister Annie Michelson; and many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren!

Services were held Oct. 15, 2011 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kalamaula, Molokai. Burial followed at the Kanakaloloa Cemetery in Ho`olehua, Molokai.

 

Edward “Kahai” James Mersberg

Edward “Kahai” James Mersberg, 50, of Maunaloa, Molokai, died on Aug. 24, 2011 at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He was born in Bell County, Texas. He is survived by his sons, Travis Lindsey and Edward James Kaha`i Mersberg; daughter, Daneil Marie Kuuleimomi Mersberg; mother, Evangeline Meala Mersberg; brothers, Robbie, Jeffery, Andrew and Yohannan Mersberg and sisters, Carmen Mersberg, Cynthia Mersberg, Rhonda Mersberg, Gina Mersberg and Julie Hiro.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 at Manager’s Road in Maunaloa from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Luncheon to follow.

Honoring a Fallen Comrade

Hundreds flooded Kalaliana`ole Hall Saturday to pay their final respects to fallen Honolulu police officer and Molokai boy Eric Fontes.

“Molokai is Eric’s hometown and ohana,” said Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha. “The community instilled the integrity and values he carried with him.”

He said Fontes was “admired by many for his strong conviction and belief,” and voted most inspirational in his recruit class.

Gov. Abercrombie sent his condolences, saying in a letter, Fontes “demonstrated the best principals of the beloved people of Molokai.”

Salome C. “Oming” Garces

Salome C. “

Oming” Garces passed peacefully in the presence of her immediate family on Oahu on Sept. 4.  She now joins her beloved husband, Mariano F. Garces, who passed in 1991.

She was born in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur in the Philippines in 1936.  She resided in Maunaloa town (from ’68) and in Kaunakakai (from ’79 to current).  She is survived by her sons Marlon (Elizabeth), Mario and Marino (Bernette) and grandchildren, Celina, Joshua, Marlyssa, Jaylyn, Michael and Marcus.  She is also survived by her brother Gerardo (Emma) Dela Cuadra, sisters Iniana Cabanting, Guadalupe Javier, Bibiana Taasan, Dionisia Dela Cuadra and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was affectionately known as “Aunty Oming” to students that learned Filipino folk dances from her and through her involvement with various community events and family celebrations.  She was an active member of the Kaunakakai Filipino Association and the Blessed Damien Catholic Parish.  She was a retired housekeeper and seamstress at the former Sheraton Hotel at Kaluakoi.  Also, she worked as a laborer for the Dole Pineapple Company in Maunaloa town before working for the Sheraton Hotel at Kaluakoi. 

As one of her last wishes, she sends her love and Mabuhay to all her friends and family on Molokai including former residents from the Maunaloa community and she thanks all of them for their love and support throughout her living years.  

Her services will be held at the Mililani Memorial Mortuary Mauka chapel in the evening on Thursday, Oct. 6, and her funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waipahu.  Her burial will follow at the Mililani Memorial Park.

Keoki Xander Kepanila Luafalemana-Mcguire passed away on Sept. 19. He is survived by parents Seanalle P. Luafalemana and Keoki H. McGuire of Ualapue, Molokai and brother Justice N. Luafalemana.

Friends may call on Saturday, Oct.  1, from 9 a.m. with service at 10 a.m. at the Ka Hale Laa o Iruselaema Hou Church in Kalamaula, Molokai. Burial to follow at Kapaakea, Molokai.

William Hulu Kekahuna Mahiai of Kaunakakai, Molokai died on Sept. 10 at his home in Kaunakakai. He was born on Sept. 25, 1932 in Kamalo, Hawaii. He is survived by daughters Kathy Ching of West Valley, Utah, Lisa Ann (Christopher) Gaui of West Valley, Utah, Lori (Joe) Kaiama of Kaunakakai, Molokai and Elsa Mei (Tanuli) Ah Van of Kaunakakai, Molokai; grandchildren Daniel, Stewart, Allison, Theodore, Cleighton, Pohailani, Kapeka, Keaolani, Valasi, Kawaiola, Colin, Cole-B, Kawehilani, Kanani, and Tofi; and great grandchildren Kealomahina, Kuulani, Denis, Alden, Kaili, Keilana, Leilah Ann, and Tehani.
