Patricia Bautista Yacapin died on Feb. 24, 2013 in Tacoma, WA. of cancer. She was born in Ho`olehua, Molokai on July 28, 1944 to Felipe Bautista Sr. and Anacita Ibarra. She survived by her husband Arsenio (Al) Yacapin of Tacoma. She is also survived by her siblings Phil (Amelia) Bautista, Honolulu, Shirley (Jess) Baker, Priscilla (Lou) Gregory of Pearlridge, Patrick (Maggie) Ibarrra of Maui, Stef (Mike) Honma of Kahuku, and Donna (Barry) Wallace of Salt Lake City, UT. She leaves behind her son Gandy (Charlotte) Yacapin of Wahiawa, her daughter Missy (JT) Johnson of GA. She also has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.…

Moana Dudoit: A legacy of love, culture and ohana

“One of the best friends I ever had.” “Always helped everyone.” “A legacy of unconditional love.” “Always dreamed big.” “Spiritually strong.” These are just a few of the ways one of Molokai’s most beloved kumu hula, Aunty Moana Dudoit, is described by family and friends.

For more than 40 years, Dudoit’s halau has taught and supported about 300 people ranging in age from 4 to 90-something. Traveling around the world to share the aloha spirit, Hawaiian culture and love of family, Dudoit has touched not only those on her native island of Molokai, but also those on the mainland, and in Japan, Europe and the South Pacific.…

Obituary: Steven James Schonely

Steven James Schonely passed away on Aug. 31, 2012 at his home in Kaunakakai. He was born on March 29, 1951 in Agana, Guam. He is survived by his mother Barbara Schonely of Kaunakakai, Molokai, father William Schonely of Portland, OR and his three younger siblings: Linda (Jim) Christison of Portland, OR, Rick Schonely of Kalua`aha Molokai, and Billy (Sam) Schonely of Hillsboro, OR. Steve’s passion was for the deep blue sea, where he spent many days and nights fishing the waters of Hawaii. He was also the owner of Island Kine Auto Rental & Sales.

Friends of Cami Naehu share memories

Just past mile marker 18 on the east end, fresh flowers decorate a section of Kamehameha V Highway in remembrance of Cami Naehu, 33, who died in a motorcycle accident last Saturday. The Molokai native is survived by two sons.

“Her forgiving heart has taught me so much about life, more than she will ever know. Obituary: Robert “Bobby” Paleka

Robert “Bobby” Paleka of Ho`olehua, Molokai, died at the age of 72 on June 19, 2012 at his home on Mo`omomi Ave. He was a retired equipment operator for Grace Pacific Corp and Operators Union Local 3. He was born on Sept. 17, 1940 in Ho`olehua.

He is survived by wife Barbara ” Bea” Paleka; son Sonny (Rhonda) Paleka of Hilo; daughters Roberta “Penny” (Mike) Paleka-Steinhoff of Ho`olehua, Shatina (Keala) Paleka of Ho`olehua, and Myra (Nate) Ah Mook Sang of Honolulu; brothers Herman (Joan) Paleka of Kauai, Henry “Bully” (Rosie) Paleka of Kalamaula, and Earl Paleka of Kaunakakai; sister Jamesie “Hunny” (Reuben) Sambajonof Kaunakakai; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.…

Vicenta Calpito Vergara, age 87, of Kaunakakai, Molokai died on March 11, 2012 in Kaunakakai. She was born in Nagbukel, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. She is survived by sons Ed (Patti) Vergara of San Diego, Calif., Glenn (Tammy) Vergara) of Honolulu, and Arnold (Michele) Vergara of Lanai City, Lanai; daughters Aida (Alvin) Calvan of Honolulu and Irene (Carlton) Pabalan of Boulder City, CO; and 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Friends may call on Saturday, April 14, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. with Mass at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Damien Catholic Church in Kaunakakai, Molokai. Burial to follow at the Kapa`akea cemetery in Kapa`akea, Molokai.…

Teruo Nakamoto

Teruo Nakamoto, 90, of Kualapu`u, Molokai, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Haie Makua, Kahului under Hospice Care. He was born February 16, 1922 in Wailuku.

He was a retired Foreman with the Del Monte Company. He is survived by his wife Agnes M. Nakamoto, son Roland (Sharon) Nakamoto, daughters Lorraine (William) Rhyne, Gwendolyn (Donald) Wheatlake, Sherrie (Guy) Ueki, eight grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and sister Kimiko “Kay” Nakagawa.

Services over ashes are on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Kaunakakai Baptist Church, Molokai. Visitation from 9:30 to 10:30am; Service at 10:30 a.m.

Family request no flowers. Casual attire.…

Osamu Murakami, born Jan. 2, 1925, died on Nov. 21, 2011 at the age of 86. He is survived by his hanai children William Neil Puaa Sr. (deceased with surviving spouse Wahineiakawaiolaakane Puaa, Agatha Justina Puaa (Robert Poepoe Sharpe) both deceased, Marianito (Denice) Alavazo, Mary (John) Rawlins, Andres (Denise) Alavazo, Puniala (Larry) Alavazo, Doreen (Mercury) Dudoit. He is also survived by his nieces Gail (Gairett) Omoto, Trudi (Rex) Kahumoku, Cathy Ann (James) Robinson and nephews Burton Yamashiro, Clinton (Tina) Yamashiro, Norton Yamashiro and Milton Yamashiro.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, Dec. 10 at Kalaikamanu Hou Church Hall at 9 a.m.

Anita Naeole Arce of Molokai passed away on Oct. 4, 2011 at her home in Ho`olehua. She was 86. Arce was born Jan. 21, 1925 in Honolulu. She is survived by her sons Steven (Mokihana) Arce of Ho`olehua, Andrew (Kuulei) Arce of Ho`olehua and Thomas (Kali) Arce of Kalae, Molokai; daughters Sandra (Jeffery) English of Kualapu`u, Molokai, Lynn Arce of Honolulu, Gwendolyn Arce of Ho`olehua and Gwendolyn Crandall of Santa Maria, Calif.; sister Annie Michelson; and many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren!

Services were held Oct. 15, 2011 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kalamaula, Molokai. Burial followed at the Kanakaloloa Cemetery in Ho`olehua, Molokai.
