Salome C. “Oming” Garces

Salome C. “

Oming” Garces passed peacefully in the presence of her immediate family on Oahu on Sept. 4.  She now joins her beloved husband, Mariano F. Garces, who passed in 1991.

She was born in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur in the Philippines in 1936.  She resided in Maunaloa town (from ’68) and in Kaunakakai (from ’79 to current).  She is survived by her sons Marlon (Elizabeth), Mario and Marino (Bernette) and grandchildren, Celina, Joshua, Marlyssa, Jaylyn, Michael and Marcus.  She is also survived by her brother Gerardo (Emma) Dela Cuadra, sisters Iniana Cabanting, Guadalupe Javier, Bibiana Taasan, Dionisia Dela Cuadra and numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was affectionately known as “Aunty Oming” to students that learned Filipino folk dances from her and through her involvement with various community events and family celebrations.  She was an active member of the Kaunakakai Filipino Association and the Blessed Damien Catholic Parish.  She was a retired housekeeper and seamstress at the former Sheraton Hotel at Kaluakoi.  Also, she worked as a laborer for the Dole Pineapple Company in Maunaloa town before working for the Sheraton Hotel at Kaluakoi. 

As one of her last wishes, she sends her love and Mabuhay to all her friends and family on Molokai including former residents from the Maunaloa community and she thanks all of them for their love and support throughout her living years.  

Her services will be held at the Mililani Memorial Mortuary Mauka chapel in the evening on Thursday, Oct. 6, and her funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waipahu.  Her burial will follow at the Mililani Memorial Park.

Keoki Xander Kepanila Luafalemana-Mcguire

Keoki Xander Kepanila Luafalemana-Mcguire passed away on Sept. 19. He is survived by parents Seanalle P. Luafalemana and Keoki H. McGuire of Ualapue, Molokai and brother Justice N. Luafalemana.

Friends may call on Saturday, Oct.  1, from 9 a.m. with service at 10 a.m. at the Ka Hale Laa o Iruselaema Hou Church in Kalamaula, Molokai. Burial to follow at Kapaakea, Molokai.

William Hulu Kekahuna Mahiai of Kaunakakai, Molokai died on Sept. 10 at his home in Kaunakakai. He was born on Sept. 25, 1932 in Kamalo, Hawaii. He is survived by daughters Kathy Ching of West Valley, Utah, Lisa Ann (Christopher) Gaui of West Valley, Utah, Lori (Joe) Kaiama of Kaunakakai, Molokai and Elsa Mei (Tanuli) Ah Van of Kaunakakai, Molokai; grandchildren Daniel, Stewart, Allison, Theodore, Cleighton, Pohailani, Kapeka, Keaolani, Valasi, Kawaiola, Colin, Cole-B, Kawehilani, Kanani, and Tofi; and great grandchildren Kealomahina, Kuulani, Denis, Alden, Kaili, Keilana, Leilah Ann, and Tehani.

Judy Ann Leinani Petronilla Yamamoto

Judy Ann Leinani Petronilla Yamamoto of Hoolehua died on Sept. 4 at Molokai General Hospital. She was 65 years old. Yamamoto is survived by her daughter Kelly Yamamoto of Corvaliss, OR; brothers Steven Ramones Arce, Jr., Andrew Gil Kaleiola Arce and Thomas Kahakuloahoapiliokekaiholuholuonapiilani Arce; sisters Gwendolyn Kuulei Felisa Crandall (half -sister), Sandra Nalani Arce-English, Lynn Marie Mililani Arce and Gwendolyn Leilani Arce.

Services were held on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kalamaula, Molokai. Burial followed at the Kanakaloloa Cemetery in Hoolehua, Molokai.

Joycelyn Ellen Noelani “Noe” (Kaina) Nealu

On Aug. 30 our beloved mother, spouse, grandparent, sister, cousin, aunty and a very dear friend Joycelyn Ellen Noelani (Kaina) Nealu, better known to everyone as “Noe”, went home to our Lord and Savior. She was born on Jan. 22, 1961 at Maui Memorial Hospital and raised on Molokai in Kapaakea. She is survived by her spouse Sinipata Tupola Sr. of Maui; her children Eileen Leilani (Fats) Kahoalii of Molokai, Lopini (Robin) Pelenato (Melissa) Ngalu Jr. of Molokai, Vaita Alavina (Mamo) Tupola of Maui and Sinipata Tupola Jr. of Maui; her siblings Paul (Cindy) Kaina Sr. of Maui, Stanceford Kaina Sr. of Puna, Hawaii, Henry Kaina III of Maui, Norman Pu of Molokai, Pake (Lucy) Pu of Molokai, George Kaya of Maui, Masanori (Dana) Kaya Jr.

George Stanley “Keoki” Pahapu Kaulia Sr.

George Stanley “Keoki” Pahapu Kaulia Sr. passed peacefully Aug. 3, 2011 at the Molokai General Hospital with his sons, daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at his side. Born July 13, 1937 on Oahu, he was married to his beloved wife Moana “Aunty Mo” Kaulia and had 20 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Our “Papa” was well known for living life to the fullest. He was famous for this “green thumb” – everything he touched flourished. He was a man of many talents.

Family and friends are invited to share their stories during a celebration of life at George Kaulia’s hale in Kalamaula on Sept. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Mary Puamaia Tollefson of Kalamaula, Molokai died on Aug. 15 in Kaunakakai at the age of 86. She was born on Aug. 9, 1925 in Kohala, Hawaii. She is survived by sons Samuel (Theone) Tollefson of  Sammamish, WA, Chris (Sandy) Tollefson of Waimanalo, Oahu, Timothy (Olive) Tollefson of Fayetville, NC; daughter Sharlene (Pedrico) Tollefson of Madrid, Spain; brother Alvin “Wina” Cazimero of Penn., and eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Friends may call on Friday, Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. with service at 11 a.m. at the Kings Chapel Church in Kaunakakai, Molokai. Burial to follow at the Kapa`akea Cemetery in Kapa`akea, Molokai.

Samuel Kama Kamai of Ho`olehua, Molokai died on Aug. 13 at the Queens Medical Center in Honolulu at the age of 86. He was born in Honolulu on Dec. 23, 1924. He is survived by wife Lillian M. Kamai of Ho`olehua; sons Victor Ronald (Wena) Kamai of Kahului, Maui, and Daniel Anthony (Rally) of Anaheim, Calif.; daughters Carolyn (Rodney) Vair of Las Vegas, NV, Lorna (Longie) Dudoit of Hoolehua, Molokai, Claudia (Andrew Germinaro) Kamai of Ho`olehua, Lydia (Cheyenne) Joao of Kaunakakai, and Kathleen (Joey) Joao of Kaunakakai; and 20 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

Friends may call on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. with service at 10 a.m. at the Lanikeha Community Center in Ho`olehua, Molokai. Burial to follow at the Kanakaloloa Cemetery in Ho`olehua, Molokai.

Micheline “Mitchy” Uilani Wilson

Micheline “Mitchy” Uilani Wilson in Honolulu on May 14, 1948 passed peacefully on Aug. 1. She is survived by her daughter Renee Albino and four grandchildren, Lyndsie, Channing, Reeve and Naavah Albino of Molokai. Mitchy was the middle of five children born to Eloise and Walter Yong. She was raised in Waikiki, where she and her siblings grew up surfing. Family members include brother Walter Yong Jr., sisters Sharee Davis and Renee Yong-Kagimoto, nieces Sienne Kagimoto, Jerry Boy and Rebecca Seguritan, grandniece Arianny Yi and beloved Aunty Alice Puu.

A Blessed Life

Lucy Keonaona Maunu Kaona, whose Hawaiian values of love and `ohana enabled her to overcome the separation from her family to live a “blessed” life at Kalaupapa, died July 21 at the Kalaupapa Care Home. She was 82 years old.

“I don’t think I’m blessed, I know I’m blessed,” said Lucy while on a picnic with friends at Kalaupapa many years ago.

Those blessings were not always easy to find. Because of policies regarding leprosy that weren’t completely abolished until 1969, Lucy endured the painful separation from her family not once, but three times.
