Obituary: Mike Hiroshi Misaki

Mike Hiroshi Misaki, 89, passed away on July 29, 2014. He was born on Aug. 24, 1924 in Kaunakakai, Molokai. He was the owner of Misaki’s Inc.

In 1945, he served in the Army for two years in the Philippines. Upon returning, he decided to attend the National School for Meat Cutting in Toledo, Ohio and later resumed working at Misaki’s. He was an active member of Kalaiakamanu Hou Church and was the general chairman for the building committee that built the Sunday school and parsonage in 1965. He also served as a deacon.

He was married for 63 years and is survived by his wife, Diana, his children, Kevin, Gil and Lorri, and his grandchildren, Kristen, Kory and Kekumu.…

Romulo “Mario” C. Casino, Jr., 58, of Wailuku, passed away on March 23, 2014 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was born October 2, 1955 in Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur, Philippines.

Services will be on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Molokai Baptist Church, Kaunakakai, with visitation starting at 9 am. Services begin at 11 am followed by burial at Kapakea Cemetery. Norman’s Mortuary assisted with arrangements.

“Mario” had a passion for life. He loved his family, friends, tennis, and watching sports. He and his wife were active in Filipino Community. They often highlighted as the lead solo couple dancers at many of the Fil-Am events.…

DiAna Makaokalani Lima, 33, of Kapa`akea, Molokai, died on Feb. 3, 2014 in Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, HI. She was born in Kaunakakai, Molokai. Recently, Molokai lost a special daughter; distinctive because she was of a generation mostly gone by and distinguished by the incredible path she chose to tread.  Each road she took brought her home again.  This island daughter was kupuna Yola Meyer Forbes, who was raised, later resided and died on her Ho`olehua homestead on Sept. 9, 2013, two months short of her 80th birthday. Born in 1933 in Kalae in a small shack her father built, which still stands near the highway, they moved a few years later what would be their family home for more than 75 years.…

Remembering Larry Helm

A Molokai icon has passed away, leaving memories of a leader, veteran advocate and entertainer who was as passionate as he was humorous. Larry Helm died peacefully on June 19 at the age of 70, surrounded by his family, after a battle with liver cancer.

“Throughout his career, Larry has been a positive influence in the Molokai community, and over the years, much of the progress on Molokai has had Larry’s fingerprints on it,” said Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa.

Helm is perhaps best known as commander of the Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans and leading the nearly decade-long battle to build a veterans’ center on the island.…

Linda Haleola Hatsue Adachi (Kahookano), 52, of Maunaloa, Molokai, passed away on March 28, 2013 at Molokai General Hospital. She was born on June 19, 1960 in Kaunakakai, Molokai.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kalamaula, Molokai, Hawaii. Services will begin at 12 p.m. and burial to follow at 1 p.m. at the Kanakaloloa (Ho’olehua Homestead) Cemetery. Pa’ina will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 3 p.m. Please join us!

Obituary: Julia Coelho

Julia Coelho of Kawela, Molokai passed away on March 14, 2013 at the age of 87 at her daughter’s home on Oahu. She was a retired nurse with Molokai General Hospital and was a helping hand for many with animals. Born in New York on Aug. 17, 1925, she traveled to Europe and Central America before settling down on Molokai in the mid 50s.

She is survived by her daughter, Clarice (Coelho) Olayvar; sons Michael and Clarence W. Coelho Jr., six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Visitation for friends and family will be on Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 9 a.m.…

Patricia Bautista Yacapin died on Feb. 24, 2013 in Tacoma, WA. of cancer. She was born in Ho`olehua, Molokai on July 28, 1944 to Felipe Bautista Sr. and Anacita Ibarra. She survived by her husband Arsenio (Al) Yacapin of Tacoma. She is also survived by her siblings Phil (Amelia) Bautista, Honolulu, Shirley (Jess) Baker, Priscilla (Lou) Gregory of Pearlridge, Patrick (Maggie) Ibarrra of Maui, Stef (Mike) Honma of Kahuku, and Donna (Barry) Wallace of Salt Lake City, UT. She leaves behind her son Gandy (Charlotte) Yacapin of Wahiawa, her daughter Missy (JT) Johnson of GA. She also has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.…

“One of the best friends I ever had.” “Always helped everyone.” “A legacy of unconditional love.” “Always dreamed big.” “Spiritually strong.” These are just a few of the ways one of Molokai’s most beloved kumu hula, Aunty Moana Dudoit, is described by family and friends.

For more than 40 years, Dudoit’s halau has taught and supported about 300 people ranging in age from 4 to 90-something. Traveling around the world to share the aloha spirit, Hawaiian culture and love of family, Dudoit has touched not only those on her native island of Molokai, but also those on the mainland, and in Japan, Europe and the South Pacific.…
