Marge Carol Leeks

Marge Carol Leeks, 89 years old, passed away on Aug. 2, 2020. She was born on Nov. 18, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. She is survived by Irwin (Cookie) Pawlak, Richard Pawlack, Arlen Cohen and Tedd Palek, as well as her extended ohana on Molokai.

Marge worked from the time she was 13 years old, and lived through the Great Depression. In Chicago, she owned a beauty store and a bar. On Molokai, she worked at many places, including Wines and Spirits, Pau Hana Inn, Hotel Molokai, and cleaning the American Savings building. Many people remember her driving around in a red Cadillac and delivering baked goods to everyone she appreciated, including the post office employees, bank tellers, grocery store employees, doctor’s office staff, and friends and neighbors.…

William “Bill” Guillermo Sahagun

It is with great sadness that the family of William “Bill” Guillermo Sahagun of Honolulu, HI announces his passing on Monday, Aug. 3, 2020.

Bill was born in Kaunakakai, Molokai on June 4, 1965; son of the late Felipe and Eugenia (Bumanglag) Sahagun. He graduated from Molokai High School in 1983 and attended Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. He later returned to Hawaii and worked at the Pagoda Hotel as front desk manager for 18 years. Bill enjoyed being a Steelers fan, but more than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his children Waverly Hope and Tristan Ford Sahagun.

Bill will be lovingly missed and remembered by his siblings Filma C.…

Felix John Kehano, Jr.

Felix John Kehano, Jr. was born in the morning of March 22, 2005 in Wailuku, Maui.
He spent the first seven years of his life on Maui doing the things he loved to do. Felix loved spending time with his family, riding horses, playing soccer, camping, going to the beach and going holoholo. Felix and his family were heavily plugged into Pukalani Nazarene church while on Maui.

In 2013, Felix and his family relocated to Molokai. Felix enjoyed being a part of the Kualapu’u Robotics team, visiting the Molokai Art Center and doing arts and crafts, working on the homestead with his family, gaming with friends from school and friends afar, helping to restart the Molokai Nazarene church in Kalama’ula, creating on YouTube (dmdgamer_youtuber), hanging out in his Kualapu’u neighborhood, and playing Fortnite (maui_hammah).…

Jodie Kaeha, 82, died May 5, 2020, with her family and loved ones by her side.
Jodie was born May 29, 1937, in Hana, Maui. Raised by her father, Jodie lived briefly in the Philippines, later, returning to Molokai where she found a family bond with the Dudoit Ohana. She happily spent the better part of her life at their Morris Point Residence.

Jodie was a beloved part of the late Moana Dudoit’s household and was never very far from Moana’s side. Jodie’s extravagant and sparkly dress attire was outdone only by her dedication and love for Aunty Moana and the entire Dudoit Ohana.…

Kathy Kennedy (Kathryn Lapinski-Kennedy) died peacefully at Queen’s Hospital in Honolulu on March 23, 2020 after a long battle against heart disease and end stage renal disease. She died holding her children’s hands.

Kathy was born on April 22, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Molokai in 1981. First as a hospital nurse in St. Louis and San Francisco, Kathy cared for patients in the ICU and ER. Moving to Molokai, she worked many years as an ER nurse at Molokai General Hospital. She then worked at the Health Department for over 25 years. She loved caring for each of her patients and their families.…

Charles C. “Boogie” Reyes, Sr. of Kaunakakai, Molokai was born Oct. 2, 1936. He passed away peacefully on Feb. 22, 2020 at the age of 83. He is survived by children Susan (Frank) Kaahanui, Travis Reyes and Chucky Reyes (deceased); spouse Janet (deceased); and siblings Oriette (deceased), Gilbert (deceased), George and Lawrence.
Molokai service will be held on Friday, March 20, 2020 at the Ho’olehua Veterans Cemetery. Viewing will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and service and burial will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.…

Gerry Anderson: ‘A Wonderful Life’

Longtime Molokai resident and former owner of The Molokai Dispatch, Gerry Anderson, has passed away at the age of 83, leaving a legacy of travel, science, kindness and a newspaper. He and his wife, Edie, lived in West Molokai since 1987, 18 years of which he battled lymphoma, while they pursued their love of world travel.

“When he was in the last few days, he looked at me and said, ‘You know, I’ve had a wonderful life,’” Edie recalled. “He meant it… He had a traumatic childhood but he didn’t dwell on it. Everything he did, he was self-made.”

Gerry was born in China in 1935 and grew up in New Jersey.…

Obituary: Darryl Canady

Darryl Canady passed away Jan. 15, 2017. He is survived by his wife Jody Canady. He was born in Pasadina, California in 1935 and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Darryl and Jody have been residents on Molokai for 35 years. Darryl loved Molokai and the people. He served as the Molokai representative on the Urban Design Review Board for Maui County for five years. He also served on the board for West Molokai Association and was on the board for Ke Nani Kai. In the mid-80s, he served on the legislative committee for the real estate commotion in Oahu.…

Kalaupapa Remembers Edwin Lelepali

A Kalaupapa legend Edwin “Uncle Pali” Lelepali passed away at the age of 88 on Feb. 7, 2016, and the Kalaupapa community celebrated his one year of passing earlier this month on Tuesday, Feb. 7, in Kalaupapa. A service was held at Kana`ana Hou Church with Pastor Richard Miller and Charles Buck, Conference Minister of the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ, and along with many of his friends. Uncle Pali’s favorite music was played by the Kalaupapa Backyard Band and stories were shared by many. After the service and music, everyone headed to the grave site at Papaloa Cemetery for more beautiful words, music, hula and poetry.…
