St. Damien Church Bell

Thursday, May 5th, 2022

Tempting to ring and fun to hear but just letting you all know, especially the kids that hang around Kaunakakai town, that the bell at St. Damien Church is not a toy to play with.  We got scolding too growing up, not only from Father, but someone from the Pe’elua ohana back then because that bell can be heard from anywhere in town and lower Ranch Camp. It is rung only when we are called to prayer, when the Eucharist is being consecrated at Mass, at funerals/All Souls Day in memory of those who passed, weddings and special occasions like Christmas and Easter when the Gloria is sung. …

Mahalo for Support

Wednesday, April 20th, 2022

My name is Gladys Rapanot and on behalf of my children and myself, we would like to thank everyone who whole heartedly supported our family for the passing of the late Ronald Rapanot, Sr. who passed on Feb. 10, 2022 peacefully at home. Thank you for all the generous donations, all the ways of comforting us in a kind and sincere way. Thank you to the Kekahunas and Mawaes for preparing the delicious food along with the food and desserts prepared by our friends and family.

My children, grandchildren and great grandchildren still talk about Papa Ronald, so believing that he is in a better place and knowing he comes to see us everyday makes it a little easier to accept his passing, although not all of us can see him but can sure feel his presence. …

Mahalo, Uncle Moke

Wednesday, April 13th, 2022

As we approach the first anniversary of Uncle Moke Kim’s death on April 17, please join me in reflecting on his words from an interview he gave years ago:

“On Molokai, we need to be our own county. We need to start our own mala (gardens), to wean our dependence from the stores. We need to start walking and riding bikes more so we’re not dependent on oil. We need to start building the big double wa’a (canoe) so we’re not dependent on the airlines. We want to be independent, we want to be self-sustaining, we want to be sovereign. Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘Every household, take care of yourself first.…

Action Needed on Molokai Ranch

Action Needed on Molokai Ranch

Molokai Ranch has been up for sale for years now. All efforts to buy have failed thus far.

The price is too high at $260 million.

Water has been a major problem, both their mountain stream dams, reservoirs and 25 miles of pipes. They have no permit to operate their drinking water at Well 17. The land has serious (criminal) erosion problems that includes a red shoreline after rains that threatens the pristine reefs. The traditional forest has been denuded and is gone.

The ranch, which is one third of our island, is owned by a foreign county in Singapore that is almost impossible to contact.…

Kind Rescue

Thursday, February 3rd, 2022

We would like to thank the young man who rescued our dog who was walking on the highway in Kamalo on the night of January 22nd.  He so kindly picked her up and kept her safe for the night and somehow managed to find out where she lived and returned her safely the next morning.  We were so very happy to have her back we failed to get his name and thank him properly.  He has our heartfelt appreciation.

Sincerely, Gerry and Karen Garcia…

Mokulele Responds to Storm Damages

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021

As you may have heard, during the intense storms two weeks ago, two of Mokulele’s aircraft were damaged (and taken out of service) by an Amazon cargo container which was caught in a severe wind and thrown into them at the Honolulu International Airport.

Thank goodness it was the middle of the night and no one was injured! Nevertheless, losing two airplanes has caused considerable pain in our system. We are working diligently both to repair these airplanes and to bring additional ones over the ocean from the mainland.

Also during this time, almost every Hawaiian airport experienced a closure that caused every airline to have long delays.…
