Legal Aid Retirement

I started working at Legal Aid Society of Hawaii on Jan. 2, 1992 under the supervision of Karen Holt as a clerk, paralegal and office manager in a small office located below Molokai General Hospital. The mission of Legal Aid is to serve legal needs and services to low-income, “the haves and have nots” income eligible individuals and seniors having a difficult time understanding notices, forms and important information. I retired with Legal Aid as of Aug. 9. 

Legal Aid assists in family law, child custody, paternity, divorce, visitation, child abuse and support, adoptions, power of attorney and wills, public benefits such as welfare assistance for individuals and families, housing, evictions and Section 8 housing, utility shut off, along with name changes, vital statistic records and wrongful termination referrals. …

Make a Difference Internationally

The International Hospitality Center (IHC) is still in urgent need of finding volunteer host families for foreign exchange students in the upcoming academic year.  This is an opportunity to build long lasting international connections and share new cultural experiences in your home.  Any assistance you can give in placing students on Molokai would greatly benefit these student’s lives and expand the island’s cultural diversity.  Students are aged 15 to 17 and will be attending public school.  Molokai has hosted students in recent past that count their time on Molokai as one of the greatest highlights of their lives.  

Volunteer hosts are asked to provide bed and meals taken with the family for carefully selected high school exchange students who are fully covered by health, accident and liability insurance and have their own personal spending money. …

Congratulations to Hiro’s Ohana Grill for your family’s five years of serving delicious kaukau for our community and visitors that are coming to enjoy the beauty of our Molokai happy, rich, simple lifestyle. We want to keep it that way. I enjoyed the wonderful music and sweet sound of all the musicians at the anniversary event. Great to see Makaha Sons again, beautiful memories. Food, broke da mouth. Staff and all the workers did a very fantastic job to welcome everybody, serve with a beautiful smile of aloha. What a great way to celebrate our own five years having fun at Hiro’s.…

A fond farewell and safe travels to Aunty Teri Waros as she moves to the states. They say that knowledge is power. There is certainly plenty of knowledge contained in a book. Thank you for sharing countless books with this community for more than a decade. Running a small business is never easy, let alone an independent bookstore in Kaunakakai. We are so grateful to have met and gotten to know you and to have shared many cups of coffee and lunches with you under the shade of the kukui trees in the backyard of the bookstore. We know that the past few years haven’t been easy on anyone, especially you, but we’re so happy you made it through those difficult days.…

This is Johnson Harris and you probably know me as the kid who rides his bike all around.  Well, I am from Liberia. I came to Molokai as part of the American Government Culture Exchange Program for this past school year.  I was hosted by the James and Vicki Boswell for the past school year while attending Molokai High School as a junior.
