Water Catchment

Thursday, September 29th, 2022

I just read Sept. 14 article on Molokai’s energy future and here are some of my thoughts for the future, mostly involving water. What about the Permaculture idea of water catchment from rooftops? People can build their own for very little money.

There are many thousands of square feet in Ranch Camp and coming down the hill to the police station, Kaunakakai gym, county offices, the elementary school, etc. Along with it could be water hyacinths, a plant used to purify water and protect fish. Guppies can eat any mosquito larvae. Cardboard, pallets and six mil plastic is almost all you need.…

Free Spay and Neuter Clinic

Wednesday, September 21st, 2022

The Molokai Humane Society thanks Juston Childs, MPD Animal Control Officer, for his informative and really important letter in the Aug. 31 issue. It covered the upcoming free spay and neuter clinic, and the importance of everyone contributing to controlling the pet population on our island. It also discussed the importance of microchipping to help pets safely and easily reunite with families, and the law of dog licensing, done at the DMV, which is discounted with proof of spay and neuter.

We would like to provide more details about our fast-approaching Greater Good clinic! It is scheduled for Oct. 4-6, Fall Break for most schools.…

Prevent Unwanted Animals

Wednesday, August 31st, 2022

This is your friendly Animal Control Officer, Juston Childs. The Molokai Humane Society will be having a spay and neuter clinic in the near future so please be on the lookout for those announcements/flyers. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to help in controlling the pet population on our island. Another service available to pet owners is microchipping. Microchipping helps us safely reunite pets with their families when they manage to escape and go holoholo.

As a reminder, canines are required by law to be licensed. Dog licenses may be obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles. We understand times are hard and money is tight, discounts on licenses are available with proof that your canine is spayed and neutered. …

Mahalo nui, Molokai! I am honored to have been chosen by our voters as the Democratic Candidate for House District 13 advancing to the General Election. Please know that each and every one of your votes made a difference. Molokai showed up at the polls, and it showed in the results. I am excited to hit the ground running and look forward to engaging with residents across our district to bring forward place-based, community driven solutions that address our most pressing issues in ways that make sense for us and our way of life. …

Searching for Families of Fallen

Wednesday, August 17th, 2022

For the past 11 years, I have worked on the Wall of Faces project with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the organization that built the Vietnam Wall in Washington DC.

I started working on Maui to find the photos of all 42 Vietnam fallen from Maui County. Within six months and with the help of the Maui News, all 42 photos came in. Molokai High School was very helpful.

I have not been able to find all the families to date and am seeking information on several Molokai families. I am writing a book about my experience with this project and would like to know a little more about each of our fallen.…

Legal Aid Retirement

Wednesday, August 17th, 2022

I started working at Legal Aid Society of Hawaii on Jan. 2, 1992 under the supervision of Karen Holt as a clerk, paralegal and office manager in a small office located below Molokai General Hospital. The mission of Legal Aid is to serve legal needs and services to low-income, “the haves and have nots” income eligible individuals and seniors having a difficult time understanding notices, forms and important information. I retired with Legal Aid as of Aug. 9.

Legal Aid assists in family law, child custody, paternity, divorce and spousal support, visitation, child abuse and support, adoptions, power of attorney and wills, public benefits such as welfare assistance for individuals and families, housing, evictions and Section 8 housing, utility shut off, along with name changes, vital statistic records and wrongful termination referrals.…

Good Samaritan

Wednesday, August 10th, 2022

On Aug. 22, I left a bank bag containing a deposit slip and a large cash deposit on the top of my car. This was not a smart thing to do, as I forgot it and drove off. The bag fell off on the side of the road. After searching, to no avail, I assumed that all was lost, with the complication that the money was not mine.  As it turned out, a good Samaritan found the bag and turned it into the police department intact. Through the deposit slip, the police were able to return it to its owner.

As the good Samaritan did not provide a name, I feel that it is appropriate for me to thank the whole community of Molokai for fostering such an atmosphere of aloha. …

Make a Difference Internationally

Wednesday, July 27th, 2022

The International Hospitality Center (IHC) is still in urgent need of finding volunteer host families for foreign exchange students in the upcoming academic year.  This is an opportunity to build long lasting international connections and share new cultural experiences in your home.  Any assistance you can give in placing students on Molokai would greatly benefit these student’s lives and expand the island’s cultural diversity.  Students are aged 15 to 17 and will be attending public school.  Molokai has hosted students in recent past that count their time on Molokai as one of the greatest highlights of their lives.

Volunteer hosts are asked to provide bed and meals taken with the family for carefully selected high school exchange students who are fully covered by health, accident and liability insurance and have their own personal spending money. …

Candidate’s Long Support of Molokai Athletics

Wednesday, July 27th, 2022

I am not one to get political, but in the race for Lt. Governor for Hawaii, most of you probably don’t know much about any of the candidates. But if any of you have a chance to vote for the Democratic candidate for Lt. Governor for the State of Hawaii, please consider Keith Amemiya as your candidate of choice.

I don’t know much about the other three candidates or if any of them may have had any impact on our Molokai community, but I want to share with you a few things that Keith has done for Molokai High School that maybe not too many of you know about or may have forgotten about.…
