Kiawe and Sustainability on Molokai

Kiawe (Prosopis pallida) is a food of antiquity from the Americas. For more than 6,000 years. Ancient cultures have used kiawe and its relatives for food, fuel and raw materials.

The “official” story is that kiawe was first brought to Oahu for Queen Emma and planted by Father Alexis Bachelot as cuttings from the Jardin du Rois in Paris, France.

Supposedly, from this one tree, all of the kiawe in Hawaii were born and subsequently spread by cattle and people as shade and fodder. The original tree was thorn-free originating from Southern Peru. Its mate was probably a thorn-free too, and from northern Peru or southern Ecuador.

A seed grown tree would have retained the memory of all it had ever been thereby giving it the potential to have thorns.

Somebody knew kiawe’s potential as an animal feed and shade tree and its ability to grow in very harsh conditions and capitalized on its ability to be spread by animals. By 1965, after only 127 years, there was an estimated 155,000 acres of kiawe in the state.

Ranchers made money from the forest by fattening their cattle creating some of the largest sustainable cattle operations in the U.S. Bees were brought in to increase Kiawe pollination and by 1935 Hawaii had become the largest exporter of honey in the world.

Since then, serious cattle ranching has fallen out of economic feasibility and kiawe has developed a reputation as a “trash” tree and a nuisance to beach-lovers because of its thorns. In many places kiawe forests are overgrown, becoming potential fire hazards.

However, these trees present an opportunity. By cleaning up the forest through thinning and trimming, we can create a park-like atmosphere that is accessible. The wood could be burned to generate enough electricity to operate hammer mills and other equipment required to process the kiawe into value-added products.

Kiawe beans are a non-genetically modified, non-toxic food that has been eaten by humans since times before corn was ever developed as a crop. It is known as a healthful food that mitigates diabetes, heart disease and colon cancer. There is a growing demand for both flour from the pods and honey from the flowers.

Once the forest is fire safe, it will be easy and perhaps necessary to replant with other food crops like coconuts and taro or endemic plants such as  Willi Willi, Uhi Uhi, Hala Pepe, Ohe Makai, Alahe’e and others. Kiawe creates a humid microclimate and reforesting has the effect of helping to recharge the ground water.

Water is, of course, the most important issue on Molokai, yet there are others. Recent stumbling blocks to developing a kiawe industry on Molokai come from Molokai Ranch shutting its doors and disallowing any activity on their land in the wake of La’au.

The people of Molokai need job security and food and energy self reliance in the event that Hawaii is cut off from mainland supplies.

We need to find a way to keep Molokai beautiful while protecting access to clean water, food and positive work that makes the world a better place. The community needs to own a vertically integrated kiawe industry that folds the resources directly back into the community.

Once the infrastructure is in place, Molokai could have enough food to feed the island’s population and energy to run basic needs without diesel. In the process we may begin to heal our land, our community and our reputation as exporters of clean, healthy, non-genetically modified food.

Via Hawaii Public Radio: Since its formation in 1897, Molokai Ranch has evolved through numerous enterprises including ranching, pineapple and, most recently, tourism, in its efforts to remain afloat.  This past April, Molokai Ranch and Molokai Properties Ltd. abruptly shut down, threatening water and sewer services to about a third of the island.  HPR's Noe Tanigawa spent a day with activists who helped precipitate the Ranch's most recent demise and are now proposing a way for the future.

A Call to Molokai to Shape Our Future

Aloha to the people of Molokai: This is a time of great reflection and of great potential for change. On a global level, the world is looking at how we can preserve our planet and our population through sustainable practices. On a national level we face rising unemployment rates and rising gas and food prices, and the entire country must determine what future we want and how we will cast our votes in the presidential election.  And on a local level, all of us here on Molokai, in the wake of Molokai Ranch's shutdown, are thinking about how we will shape the future of this island.

The document Molokai: Future of a Hawaiian Island proposes a starting point for a balanced movement toward future change. Because this plan is not set in stone it does not require a YES or NO vote and is not something for you to accept or reject.  It is simply a foundation to build upon.  The subtitle of the document "I ka wa ma mua, ka wa ma hope," tells us that our direction for the future can build upon wisdom from our past.  This document incorporates mana'o from many Molokai community plans written over a period of thirty years and also includes new and innovative visions for Molokai.  It draws on the mana'o of everyone from young elementary children to our cherished kupuna—some of whom are no longer with us but whose knowledge lives on—and it invites additional mana'o from everyone in this community.

A healthy plan must be a living document open to modification. With your input and kokua, we hope this document will evolve into a balanced blueprint for our community's future.  We may not all agree on every aspect of planning, but all sections of the plan encourage further research, idea building, and community discussion so we can collectively determine acceptable options and best courses of action. This document does not claim to have all the answers, but this document does open a dialogue to ask two crucial questions: what do we value? And what do we want for our island?

Each of us has a stake in this community and each of us has things we love about Molokai, things we want to be preserved for future generations, whether it's our everybody-knows-everybody community of 'ohana and neighbors who kokua each other, our rural lifestyle, or our clean beaches where we can fish, swim and surf.  Each of us can also name positive changes we'd like to see, such as more sustainable jobs for our people, enriched education systems, and a restored and abundant 'aina. 

Now is the time to look within and think about what you value and what you want for the future.  This plan can help you begin that process. Please read it, get out your pens, and mark it up with your own comments. This document is not only relevant for those who worked on it or those who speak out at community meetings; this document is for every Molokai resident from opio to makua to kupuna.

Stay tuned for upcoming community meetings where you can voice your input on the plan in an open and positive environment. With your help this initial vision can evolve into a truly workable plan for a better Molokai. The Valley of Sufficient Life

“How can you know if you do not ask, if you are not from here,” he says with his heart.

Some malama Halawa as families once did, but the rainforest of today has conquered the lo`i of yesterday. Nature and man have changed the `aina, but the story Pilipo tells has not changed, passed down from countless generations of Halawa kupuna.

He says, things are not secret, they are sacred. Pilipo’s ultimate message is respect – to care for the valley he believes one must know what it was before and to understand the ultimate sense of place. Nana i ke Kumu, “seek the source.”

His tutu kane, David Kapuwai Akina, once told him to share the mo`olelo of Halawa, so people can know and respect where they live and where they are.

“When?” Pilipo asked.

“When you feel it, burning in your soul – that is me, and you know the time is right,” was the message his tutu kane left.

Pilipo may not be here tomorrow. He is one of the last of the unbroken generations of Halawa farmers still in the valley. He asks all to look at Halawa as a whole, spiritual and physical, to obtain a greater sense of place. Mana is found in the knowledge and respect of the ahupua`a.

The sun has journeyed across the valley once more, and as it readies for sleep behind the Western cliffs, shadows cast from the dominating forest grow long. The mo`olelo is there, hidden by the forest but not darkened by the shadows.

“Feel the spirit of Halawa and the ancestors that gave it life,” he asks. “The kupuna of Halawa are alive; like Haloa, they are everywhere.”

Pilipo Solatario is a master storyteller and a Kumu of the Halawa mo`olelo. After many years as the cultural director of Molokai Ranch he has returned to his birthplace. Blow the pu, Pilipo makes time to talk story to all who inquire.

“I speak to educate so all who listen can respect, otherwise our people will be overgrown like the Halawa of today.” This is Pilipo’s hope. This is Pilipo’s message.

Molokai Ranch, ran by Molokai Properties Limited (MPL), had to shut down because of many water issues such as the State Supreme Court ruling that they had no permit for drinking water from Well 17, which supplies all of West Molokai. The courts also ruled against the Ranch in their bid to get a permit for their new Waiola Well. The State Attorney General said MPL had to get off the Homesteader’s Molokai Irrigation System (MIS) because they had no Environmental Impact Statement. The county passed a new ordinance requiring a developer to prove water availability before being permitted to develop.

Maui County has to find other water sources east of Kaunakakai because its wells are going salty, like that of Kawela and the Ualapue Well. How far east do they have to go?

An insider’s look at the Hawaii Democratic Convention.

As we stepped into the Hilton Convention Center, a wave of Democratic excitementwashed over us. We felt official, important – knowing that our weekend was one of change. We were to shape the blue team, mold the future of the party platform, and vote our conscience.

I had the honor, by default mind you, of attending the Hawaii Democratic Convention as a Molokai Delegate over Memorial weekend. Aunty Beverly Pauole-Moore and Aunty Annette Pauole-Ahakuelo made me their hanai for the weekend. We were there for Molokai, we were there for Barack Obama.

We were not the only ones there to support Obama. By the convention’s close the presidential hopeful would collect three more superdelegate votes and carry 21 of Hawaii’s 29 pledged delegates to the national convention.

“Maui County will have great representation at the Democratic National Convention,” Pauole-Moore said with a beaming smile.

District 13, which consists of Molokai, Lanai, and East Maui, had some of the highest Obama support in the nation with 85 percent. The unprecedented turn out broke records, leading many to believe the democratic philosophy is best for the Hawaiian Islands.

Senator Kalani English had nothing but pride for the Friendly Isle delegates, “they always represent, and Molokai never ceases to amaze me.”

And Molokai definitely represented – bringing 10 spirited delegates, the only island with 100 percent delegate representation, as well as one of the youngest delegates in attendance, 19-year-old Caroline Kahue.

The lack of `opio surprised me though. Obama has a connection with the country’s youth, registering 30,000 new voters in Hawaii alone. I do not mean any disrespect; however, the youth need to get involved, and the party leadership needs to reach out and nominate more `opio. They need to prepare us because it will soon be our turn to lead.

Nearly 1,000 Hawaii Democratic delegates took a step in this direction by electing 35-year-old Brian Shatz as the new party chair. Pauole-Ahakuelo said the election of Shatz was one of her convention highlights. Reflecting on her experience, she said she has not seen enthusiasm like this for a long time. “Everyone was just so hyped, pumped up, and we all came together to get a Democrat in the office.”

Molokai Veteran and delegate Larry Helm, has always been an independent, but believed in Obama’s message and potential early on. He has dropped the “I” and adorned a “D,” this election year. “The recipe the country is following is wrong, we need to consider a way that is equal, we need change.”

One of the most exuberant Molokai delegates was Lawrence Joao. He has attended four other democratic conventions and could not hide his Obama support. Jaoa, along with the Molokai Democrats, participated in an Obama parade, holding his sign high and chanting “Yes we can!”

Pauole-Moore is the president of the Kaunakakai Democrats, and organized the Molokai delegates. She shared the privilege with Councilman Danny Mateo of presenting convention attendees with a memorial on the life of dedicated Democratic Party member, Wilma Grambusch, who passed away in April.

“She was my mentor, and welcomed me into the Democratic Party,” Pauole-Moore said. “On Molokai, Grambusch and party politics are synonymous. She was a mover and shaker.”

“Grambusch was the Democratic Party of Hawaii,” Mateo said. “It is such an honor to have the state acknowledging one of our own.”

Mateo believes the Democrats are rebuilding, but he said “the interest is there, and this convention will catapult us into the future.”

Molokai’s 2008 Democratic delegate team was Pauole-Moore, Pauole-Ahakuelo, Joao, Helm, Lynn DeCoite, Rosie Davis, Walter Ritte, Kulia Peters, Kahue, and I.

The next step is the August Democratic national convention in Denver, and Molokai – look forward to more Democratic events here on Molokai as the campaign season continues to heat up.

Hula dates back to the Eighth Century, where a Molokai wahine named La`ila`i is said to have given birth to the dance at Ka`ana on the hill Pu`u Nana..

In its 17th year, Ka Hula Piko is creating a new identity. To honor their Kumu Hula Ka`imikaua, the Halau Hula O Kukunaokala’s sunrise ceremony atop Maunaloa was private this year. Kumu Ka`imikaua’s haumana Sulu Tafaoimalo said “we are starting over, please respect that, and next year the ceremony may again be open to the public.”

A TALE OF TWO SHUTDOWNS

Outrigger is closing a Waikiki hotel, probably for more than a year, to thoroughly renovate it. No one is being laid off.

Molokai Ranch is shutting down and laying off 120 people after seeing it might not win immediate approval to build hundreds of homes on the southwest corner of Molokai, around La’au Point.

What’s the difference between the two companies? The answer turns out not to be financial health, because there is way more wealth behind Molokai Ranch than behind Outrigger.

The difference is that Outrigger is based in Hawaii while the ultimate owner of Molokai Ranch lives in Malaysia.

I’m not saying (the Ranch owner) is some kind of evil guy, only that it’s human nature to care about what happens in your backyard and less about stuff that happens several time zones away from you.

Molokai Ranch is owned by Molokai Properties Limited, and it in turn is owned by GuocoLeisure, an international investment company based in Singapore.

GuocoLeisure’s parent company Guoco Group is traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, but its ultimate holding company is Hong Leong Co. of Malaysia.

The top five executives of GuocoLeisure make $500,000 a year or more. Deputy Chairman Philip Burdon is a former New Zealand minister of commerce.

The man at the top of this empire is Quek Leng Chan, whose net worth, according to Forbes magazine, is $2.9 billion.

Guoco Leisure describes itself as “an active investor with strategic shareholdings and active investment management aimed at extracting and maximizing shareholder value.”

It owns or operates 39 hotels in Britain, owns a resort on Fiji, and has a stake in some oil and gas holdings in Australia.

In 2007 the company made a profit of $13 million, down from $57 million in 2006. It said in its annual report that the Molokai operation would remain cash positive through 2007 through the sale of “non-strategic subdivided land” and the sale of a large agricultural parcel to Monsanto.

The parent of the parent, Hong Leong Group, is one of the largest conglomerates in Malaysia, into construction materials, furniture and newsprint. It owns one of the world’s largest semiconductor subcontract assembly operators. It is the Malaysian maker of Yamaha motorcycles.

My take on the tycoon, based on his own publicity, is that he might easily have bought Molokai Ranch and turned it over to the residents of Molokai as a charitable act if it had occurred to him or been presented to him that way. Instead it was presented as a development investment so he and the rest of the company have been focused on “extracting value.”

There was anguish over the La’au Point proposal even before the opposition to it cost (the community) 120 jobs. Opponents knew all the people who work for the Ranch — everybody knows everybody on Molokai, which has a population of only 7,000. They knew the company wasn’t happy with subsidizing its hotel, golf and ranching operations with land sales.

I’m not sure opponents thought the owners would close everything, even though they threatened to more than once, perhaps believing that no business could be so petulant.

It could. It not only announced full closure (of Ranch operations), it made a point of saying it would padlock the gates, which means it will be limiting access to La’au Point. I’ve walked out to La’au Point and the only reasonable way to get there begins with a drive over roads on Molokai Ranch property.

Outrigger, by contrast, has worked hard through the entire Beach Walk renovation to save as many jobs as possible, and has some very loyal employees as a result.

In fairness, Molokai Ranch employees were loyal, too, working gently but persuasively in the community to argue that 200 homes at La’au Point, coupled with the permanent set-aside of a very large amount of land, would be a better outcome than anything else that might happen.

They failed to persuade the community only because the compromise seemed based on a sense of the inevitability of development and the unavoidable change to way-of-life, and residents just weren’t ready to accept that.

If Quek Leng Chan lived on a beautiful island like Molokai, he might not find it easy to take, either.

Ho'olei lakou ka 'upena I ke kai 'emi a ho'omaka e kahea i na i'a mai ke kai hohonu. Ma hope iho, piha ka 'upena I na i'a! He hana kapu a kuikawa keia a makemake au e ho'ola hou I keia hana.

I want to bring back the art of kahea. I heard stories from my kupuna about when they were young and how their kupuna would take them fishing. They would lay the net in knee-deep water and then begin to kahea, or "call-out." Moments later the net would be filled with fish! This is a sacred and special practice that I would like to see be brought back.

I would bring back the Hawaiian healing arts, because Western medicine is toxic, poison, and bad for our people’s health. Our people used different parts of plants to make different medicines. This Hawaiian healing has a lot to do with `olelo and appreciation of the land. Healing plays an important part to Hawaiians and can help all.

I was able to speak with Aunty Snookie, Mo`omomi Acasio’s mother, and she was able to pass on his mana`o from 2003. Mo`o made a laulima ki`i (drawing) that represents the Hawaiian tradition of cooperation and togetherness.

I ko'u mana'o, 'o ka laulima ka mea e ho'iho'i mai ai. I ka hana o na lima a pau i ho'okahi kumuhana, e malamalama ka po'e he nui i keia kukui ikaika. Mai ka piko e pa mai ana ma na wahi a pau, 'aohe wahi e pa 'ole ai. Pa mai ia kakou pakahi a pau. Mai laila mai ka mana o ia mea he laulima.

As many hands work together for a common cause, the light of pono will touch many. The light shines from the center to all reaches, and as it touches each one of us, so does the energy of cooperation.
