Why I Am Not Voting for Neil Abercrombie

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

In the early 70s, while on Oahu, I knew an individual doing government surveillance of a radical group known as the SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). In the spirit of adventure, when this individual lacked the usual companion, I volunteered to dress up in hippie garb and go to an SDS meeting.

This turned out to be an important meeting where a long term plan was set forth to 1) set up a task force to infiltrate the high schools in the state of Hawaii, 2) obtain an office/copy machines, etc from which to propagandize, 3) change from the radical hippie image to a clean cut suit and tie image and 4) put people who supported Marxist philosophy into positions of power. Two of the names I remember well were John Witeck and Neil Abercrombie.

Can Someone Step Up to the Plate?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Agree or disagree: President Obama and Congress in less than two years put into law a 30-year debated health care reform, and in two months Wall Street and financial reform. Two years ago the Dow, the Jones and the Mary was 6,000 and the country was on the brink of financial depression – and today it’s over 10,000. The automobile industry and banks were on the verge of collapse, and have a better outlook today. There have been two wars and a very fragile economy to manage, etc., etc., etc.  Yes, one can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Oh Deer

Community Contributed

By Captain Clay Ching

This deer carcass was found tossed in the water on the side of the Wharf, close to the area where the kid's swim on the raft. It was still soft, which indicates that it was killed not long before it was found. I was launching my boat when it was found at 6:30 in the morning. It was a big buck with the head removed, backstraps and hinds also removed. Not a very pono thing to do, who would even think to do such a dastardly deed? Really no class. Surely not any responsible hunter, go figgah? In the photo, Sonny Laemoa hauls away the deer’s remains.

Dollars Blowing in the Wind

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

The undersea cable study to run wind energy from Molokai to Oahu is now underway.  If the state gets the go-ahead, what capacity of windmills will the cable handle?   It takes 12 acres to put one 400 ft. wind tower with a 45 ft. diameter and 10 ft. deep concrete to secure one wind tower.  How are these wind towers transported?

As this issue goes to print, I will no longer be working as Managing Editor of The Molokai Dispatch. It has been an honor to serve the community as editor and reporter for the past two years. Mahalo nui to everyone who has supported me as I learned and grew. Close Call

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

On June 26, my mother Margaret “Maka” Joao. who is 89 years old, went unconscious at church. Everything happened so fast that I felt like I was watching a movie happening right in my presence. I want to thank the church members for taking action in preventing my mom from hurting herself more, should she have fallen. I also want to thank Carol Kanemitsu’s quick thinking and take charge attitude; I am truly grateful. I especially want to thank the following people: The 911 dispatcher; whoever she is, thank you very much. Your calmness made it so much easier for me to give you the information you needed to pass on to the Emergency Medical Response Team.

Fishpond Protection Bill Passes

Friday, July 16th, 2010

By Chris Crammer

Last week, a state law passed that prohibits the sale of government owned Hawaiian fishponds. The message was loud and clear. Restore and protect our ancient fishponds, don’t auction them to the highest bidder.

Whether it was the hundreds of signatures collected on the petition or lobbying in the community and legislature, everyone contributed. Our legislators responded by passing the bill unanimously. Initially, Gov. Lingle placed it on her veto list. However, she reversed her decision at the end and allowed it to pass without signature.

A Historic Opportunity for Lingle to Protect Ancient Fishponds

Monday, July 5th, 2010

By Chris Cramer

This week Governor Lingle has an opportunity to leave a historic legacy for Hawai’i. HB 1665 protects Hawaii’s history by prohibiting sale of government owned Hawaiian fishponds. Her signature on the bill is needed because of a State Department of Transportation proposal to auction Honolulu’s last fishponds. The sale of publicly owned fishponds would set a scary precedent for ancient fishponds statewide.  This potential shift in State policy could also have many future implications for the numerous government owned fishponds on Molokai.

Ranch Says No Wind Negotiations Underway

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Below is a letter that clarifies the Molokai Properties Limited’s (MPL) position on wind turbines on their property. The letter, dated June 28,2010, is written by Peter Nicholas, Executive Director of MPL, addressed to Colette Machado, President of the Molokai Land Trust. Kekoa Kaluhiwa, First Wind director of external affairs has "nothing additional to say." Nicholas also had no further comment when contacted by Dispatch staff.

Dear Ms. Machado,
