This Is Holy Ground

It was 7:30 p.m. as we began celebration of Mass here at St. Francis Church. Now, ordinarily at this hour, I myself would be comfortably seated in my reclining chair in the rectory. No, I do not spend all day on my knees. At this stage in my life my knees need a rest and actually talk back to me at times. On this evening, members of the Newman Center from the University of Hawaii had gathered for Mass to give thanks to the Lord for a wonderful day of exploration of this Flat Leaf, otherwise known as Kalaupapa.…

Closing Halawa’s Church

Community Contributed

By Reynolds Ayau

To the people of Molokai, aloha! My name is Reynolds Ayau and I’m the Kahu for a little church in Halawa Valley called lerusalema Hou Church. Our little church is badly in need of replacement. Dry rot and termites have made it a total hazard.

To try and remedy the situation, we had to contact the landowner.  The landowner, God bless her, said, “I didn’t know I owned the property so I’ll donate it to the church.”  That was over three years ago and we are still waiting for the County of Maui to approve the necessary subdivision.…

Observing Damien’s Feast Day

She stepped off the plane with a broad smile on her lovely face and gave me a big squeeze as I welcomed her. The Miracle Girl, Audrey Toguchi, who credits the intercession of Father Damien with her miraculous cure from cancer, had come to Kalaupapa to join us in celebrating St. Damien’s feast day. Shortly thereafter, we climbed aboard my Paddy Wagon and rode out to St. Philomena in Kalawao to celebrate Mass in honor of St. Damien in the church he himself built. Led in song by the St, John’s choir, we had a beautiful celebration.…

Ahonui: Patience with Perseverance

Opinion by Rick Baptiste

We are on the last and fifth phase of our joint efforts in renewing the “Aloha Spirit” in our community so we all can live blessed lives on Molokai.  In my last article “h,” from the acronym ALOHA stood for Ha`aha`a, the quality of humility.  Humility is a great quality to possess as we launch into deeper waters with the last “a” in ALOHA. “A” stands for Ahonui, which is patience expressed with perseverance.

Have you ever noticed when you are impatient that whatever you are waiting on seems to take longer and leads to frustration and anger?  …

Ha`aha`a, the Quality of Humility

We are on the fourth phase of our joint efforts in renewing the “Aloha Spirit” in our community so we all can live blessed lives on Molokai. The fourth phase is the letter “H” in the acronym of “ALOHA” with “H” standing for Ha`aha`a, the quality of humility expressed with modesty.

The definition of humility taken from Webster’s Dictionary is, “The quality of not thinking you are better than other people.”  Before I go deeper, I hereby ask anyone reading this for forgiveness, in the event I have come across to you in a high makamaka attitude.  …

Metaphysical Teaching Comes to Molokai

Friday, April 3rd, 2015

By Joan Gattuso

Last year my husband and I moved to Molokai fulltime, after visiting this wonderful island for 25 years.  As a successful and respected metaphysical leader for decades on the mainland, I have decided it is time to share my teaching here beginning April 20.

When I was a young woman, I was faithful to a traditional church which taught from firm doctrine.  But when I was told I could not question that doctrine, I left the only church I had ever known and, through a fortuitous set of circumstances, joined a church called Unity.  What I discovered there was that questions were not only OK, they were encouraged.…

Damien Mosaics a Labor of Love

By Maria Sullivan

Four mosaics, depicting Father Damien and his life’s parallels with Jesus’s life, were recently installed next to the front door at St. Damien of Molokai Church in Kaunakakai. They were created by Sister Dorothy Santos during a long and spirit-filled journey and as a labor of love and devotion to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the order to which both she and St. Damien belong.

In 2011, Saint Damien Parish former pastor Father Clyde Guerrero was in the homestretch of supervising the construction of the long awaited Saint Damien of Molokai Church. Aware of her work in making beautiful mosaics of Father Damien and other holy persons, Father Clyde asked Sister Dorothy if she would create the mosaics.…

‘All Day, All Night, Marianne’

“All day, all night, Marianne

Down by the seaside siftin’ sand.

Even little children love Marianne

Down by the seaside siftin’ sand.

When she walks along the shore, people pause to greet

White birds fly around her; little fish come to her feet.”

So go some of the lines from one of my favorite popular songs from the 50s, sung by the great Harry Belafonte, among others. Now you may say that this is an unusual way to introduce the celebration of a saint. Yet that is precisely what I am doing as I think of Mother Marianne Cope, now St.…

Choose Happy

Opinion by Rick Baptiste

Did you know that being happy is a choice?  The other day I came across someone in a meeting that didn’t seem to be “happy” with me.  On the other hand, this person didn’t seem to be “happy” with anyone else as well.  I chose to speak encouragements to all those around me, and the whole environment changed in the room.

Have you ever heard someone say, “I wonder which side of the bed he got up from this morning?” or “I think she is having a bad day,” etc. Before I get out of bed, I choose to think of things to be grateful for and then I say out loud, “This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it” from Psalms 118:24.   …
