Blue Planet is recruiting for our fourth Climate Crew cohort! If you know of any motivated high school students on Molokai, Lanai, or Maui who might be interested in making an impact in their community through clean energy and sustainable efforts, please forward this to them! Free Energy-Savings Kit

Molokai residents are invited to pick up a free kit containing energy-saving items to help reduce energy use at home on Wednesday, May 11, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the drive-through locations on the island. The events will be held at Kaunakakai, Maunaloa and Kilohana elementary schools. 

Hosted by Hawaiian Electric in partnership with Hawaii Energy and the County of Maui Department of Water, the drive-through events will be distributing one kit per vehicle, first come-first served and while supplies last.

The kits include energy-saving light bulbs, water-saving faucet aerators and other items to help residents reduce energy use and manage their energy bills.…

Water Use Plan Pop-Ups

As a part of our community outreach for the Molokai Island Water Use and Development Plan, Townscape, Inc., consultant to the Maui County Department of Water Supply, will have staff on island to conduct in-person outreach. 

We will be setting up a booth pop-up style at a variety of locations during the third week of May. The purpose of the outreach is threefold. We want to reach out to folks who have not been able to participate in the virtual meetings. We will share information about the work that has been done so far on the plan. And we want to better understand community sentiments and values for the island’s water resources.…

In-Vehicle Road Testing Returning

Maui County News Release 

Maui County’s Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing will return to offering in-vehicle road testing, beginning Monday, March 28, for learner’s permit holders seeking driver’s licenses for passenger vehicles.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, DMVL began providing modified driver’s license basic skills tests since Feb. 23. The division will end modified testing on Thursday, March 24. Expats are getting free dgt test in english in Spain. You may check out these DriverZ driving resources.

All Maui County DMVL road testing stations will resume in-person road testing on March 28. Road testing stations are located in Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina, Hana, Lanai and Molokai.…

Temporary Water Shut Off for Hoʻolehua

DHHL News Release

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL), through its contractor Goodfellow Brothers, is conducting improvements to a main water line of the Hoʻolehua Water System on Molokai from Monday, March 14 through Friday, March 18.

Water service is scheduled to be shut off from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, for customers on Lihi Pali Avenue west of the Keena Place intersection, Molokai High School, and the Hoʻolehua Fire Station.

Affected customers are asked to store water and adjust schedules accordingly.

The temporary water service interruption is a portion of DHHL’s $37 million capital improvement project aimed at improving Molokai’s 80-year-old Hoʻolehua Water System.…

Budget for New County Ag Dept.

Molokai residents are invited to join a virtual community meeting that will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15 to gather public input on the new Department of Agriculture’s fiscal year 2023 budget.

The County will consider funding requests and priorities suggested by the community for the Department of Agriculture that will open in July.

“We invite our farmers, ranchers and interested residents to get involved in making plans for this new department,” Mayor Michael Victorino said. “The County Department of Agriculture will meet our community’s needs by supporting local farmers and ranchers to help improve food security, build our agricultural workforce and promote new opportunities for economic diversification.…

County Small Business Grants Open

The Maui County Small Business Grant Program is open to all small businesses in Maui County.

In early January, the County of Maui announced the Maui County Small Business Grants for Restaurants, Bars and Gyms. Effective March 1, the program became the Maui County Small Business Grant for all small businesses in Maui County.

The County of Maui offers the program in collaboration with the Credit Unions of Maui (Maui County FCU, Maui FCU, Kahului FCU, Valley Isle Community FCU, Wailuku FCU and Maui Teachers FCU). The program is part of the American Rescue Plan to assist small businesses in Maui County impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.…

Na Wahine Race Canceled

Following the cancelation of the men’s Molokai Hoe canoe race in the fall because of COVID uncertainties, announced on Feb. 9, organizers of the women’s Na Wahine O Ke Kai race just announced this year’s wahine event will also be canceled. 

“With the dropping COVID numbers, we were optimistic that the event this year could be conducted for the women who participated in this world championship canoe race,” the race’s board wrote in a Feb. 22 letter. “However, the gracious Molokai community that plays such an important role in this race is still being impacted by numerous issues related to COVID, and our kuleana to them outweighed the decision to move forward with race plans.”…

Spring Break Coastal Camp

Learning Endeavors News Release

Learning Endeavors is offering a free Coastal Camp for grades four to six during spring break. Campers will visit two coastal areas and engage in science experiments, art projects, and stewardship activities!

The two-day Molokai Coastal Camp is part of the Champions of Coastal Resilience (CCR) program, which seeks to develop climate stewards that care for our coastal communities. This camp is open to all Molokai elementary school students from grades four to six.  It will take place on March 14 and 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each day will start and end at Kaunakakai School.…
