Molokai’s Affordable Housing to Expand

Molokai Habitat for Humanity News Release, with Artice Swingle and John Wordin

Emillia Noordhoek recently attended the annual advocacy conference for Habitat for Humanity International, ‘Habitat on the Hill,’ in Washington D.C.  At this important conference, training is given on advocating regarding issues dealing with affordable housing.  Post-conference interviews allowed Noordhoek to advocate for affordable housing on Molokai with Senator Daniel Inouye and Representative Mazie Hirono. 

Issues concerning Federal dollars allocated to affordable housing and mortgage regulation related to the SAFE Act have a direct bearing on the operation of Molokai Habitat for Humanity.  Noordhoek was able to present a clear picture of the needs of the community to our lawmakers who were very receptive and helped to stress the importance of continued funding and support. 

Molokai Habitat for Humanity is expanding its operation to support both affordable housing on Hawaiian Homelands and other properties as well.  Critical to this expansion is tapping into federal programs which will support this effort.   Sustainable building and achieving high level efficiency in terms of energy use is key in working toward a sustainable Molokai.  Noordhoek’s contact will be critical in uncovering and maintaining federal funding for our community.

Supporting Molokai’s position in the conference with Inouye was Jonathan Reckford, CEO for Habitat of Humanity International.   Inouye as Housing Appropriations Committee is critical to the success of Habitat for Humanity and continued funding for affordable housing.

Hirono’s support  was welcomed.  Suggestion was made that we request funds from Housing L.A. which funds affordable housing projects.  This will be Noordhoek’s challenge upon returning to Molokai. 

As community members concerned with providing affordable energy efficient housing for all qualified applicants, we are indeed delighted that Noordhoek had this opportunity to represent Molokai and her needs.

Traffic Collision in Kaunakakai

Early last Sunday morning, a 28-year-old male was involved in a one-vehicle accident on Kamehemeha Highway, just west of Molokai Shores. Police said he crashed his truck at 2:31 a.m. and was transported to Maui Memorial Hospital. His name has not been released and the crash is still under investigation.

Molokai High School students won’t have to fuss over what to wear to class next year. Their options just grew slimmer.

On March 12 the School Community Council (SCC) passed a new edict that will require students to wear uniforms – aiming to take effect during the 2010-11 school year.

Rodney Nelson, MHS math teacher and SCC member, said the 11-2 vote in favor of uniforms stemmed from the overall belief that mandatory dress instills a positive and professional learning environment.

“Various studies have shown that uniforms bring a decrease in violence, students attending class more, less write-ups, uniformity and school spirit,” he said. “The SCC deals with educational impact. These are the kinds of things we look at when making decisions.”

Veterans of Italy Tour

Association of Descendents of Veterans of WWII Italian Campaign will tour Italy and the American battlefield cemeteries during September 2010.

Veterans, their families, children and grandchildren will visit Rome, Venice, Florence, Pisa, Cassino, Salerno and the military cemeteries at Florence and Anzio-Nettuno to honor and to remember those 24,000 combat soldiers and Navy men who gave up their lives in the battle against the Nazis in 1943-1945.

Health Center Continues to Grow

As the demand for psychiatric help began to increase, it became apparent to the Molokai Community Health Center that the island needed a new psychologist.

Enter Dr. John Havey. After receiving a bachelors from the University of Hawaii-Manoa, a master’s and a PhD in clinical and counseling psychology, Havey has worked with Care Hawaii, a mental health service provider in Oahu, as well as domestic abuse centers, working with both perpetrators and victims. Working in these services, he said, “feels the most rewarding because [abuse] seems to go in a cycle.”

Autopsy Released on Manalili

Rupert Manalili, 44, was a recent arrival to Molokai when he passed away on December 29, 2009. His recently released autopsy reported cause of death to be accidental drowning. Detective Santiago, the officer in charge of his investigation, said there was no evidence of foul play and the investigation has been closed.

“He had some injuries [on his hands] consistent with being facedown and making contact with the reef,” Santiago said. “None was significant” to cause of death.

Manalili was found by two passersby on the morning of December 30 at Papohaku Beach. Santiago said by the time medical help arrived, Manalili was already deceased.

Manalili was born in Lakewood, Washington, and lived Massachusetts, New York City, and Colorado before living in Molokai. His travels took him to the Philippines, Japan, Maine, Paris, San Francisco, and Caribbean before visiting the Hawaiian islands.
He made friends on Molokai and decided to move to here in September 2009.

He mostly worked as a chef, including a stint at Paddlers Inn. Friends and family gave him a Hawaiian memorial service on January 8, 2010 at One Ali`i Park, and his ashes were scattered at Mo`omomi Beach.

The Manalili Family wishes to express sincere gratitude and appreciation to Auntie Snooky, Uncle Jesse, Scarlett Ritte, Kalae Tangonan, Kathy Lapinski-Kennedy, Joe Kennedy, and Jaime Ronzello, for their friendship, kindness, unfailing love and assistance in helping with the lovely memorial service as well as the spiritual send off during the spreading of the ashes at Mo`omomi Bay. Molokai Island is a bittersweet experience for Rupert's family.

Olelo Special on KP2

Airing tonight March 4, 2010 on Olelo channel 53 will be the Olelo production, "Hoailona and the Coming of the Seals." It is the story of Molokai’s monk seal "KP2, and was initiated by Hawaiian activist Walter Ritte and Monk Seal Advocate Loretta Ritte. It is moderated by Trisha Kahaulani Watson JD, PhD, and the Reverend David Kaupu. The goal of the show is to present the problem, clear up false rumor and create momentum needed in the Hawaiian community to save the Hawaiian Monk Seal.

U.S. Census Road Tour – Molokai

U.S. Census Road Tour – Molokai

2010 Census questionnaires will be mailed beginning March 15-17. Residents are encouraged to mail back the questionnaires by Census Day on April 1. In early April, census takers will go door to door to assist residents who did not mail back their questionnaire.

For those without mailboxes, the Hawaii Counts 2010 Census Road Tour is making four stops on Molokai this week.
