Recently, Molokai lost a special daughter; distinctive because she was of a generation mostly gone by and distinguished by the incredible path she chose to tread.  Each road she took brought her home again.  This island daughter was kupuna Yola Meyer Forbes, who was raised, later resided and died on her Ho`olehua homestead on Sept. 9, 2013, two months short of her 80th birthday. Born in 1933 in Kalae in a small shack her father built, which still stands near the highway, they moved a few years later what would be their family home for more than 75 years.…

The American Red Cross is recruiting disaster services volunteers on Molokai. The first step for all new disaster volunteers is to take a series of basic disaster classes, which will be offered on Molokai. All Disaster Services training is provided free of charge.

New volunteer candidates must register for, and attend, the entire series. We are
offering the new volunteer training series of four courses in your community on Friday, Saturday and Sunday Oct. 11-13. All courses will be held at the Home Pumehana Senior Center meeting room.

As part of the renewal process for Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s Maui County cable TV franchise, a series of public hearings are being held to gather community input. The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) is continuing with the process of Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s renewal of its Maui County cable TV franchise. The DCCA will be holding public hearings on Maui, Molokai and Lanai to offer customers and community members the opportunity to submit testimony on Oceanic’s application.

Makani Kai Air is offering a special $39 fare between Honolulu and Molokai as a means of introducing itself to the traveling public. The $39 fare, which is being offered for a limited time only and must be made online at MakaniKaiAir.com, includes all fees and taxes. The airline, which began its topside Molokai service in June of this year, has up to eight daily round trip flights between Honolulu and Molokai.

The Molokai Arts Center (MAC) will present an exhibition of new works by local artist Kathleen Mendes from Oct. 5-18 at the He `Ike Lihi Showroom. Called “Inspired and Fired by Kathleen Mendes,” the exhibit will feature ceramic pieces composed with a variety of techniques, including slab, coil, and wheel.

When Molokai’s master potter Dan Bennett opened his studio doors in 2007 to those eager to explore ceramics, Mendes had the opportunity to pick up a ball of clay and turn it into a useful object.  Since then she has been working with this medium, discovering all the exciting possibilities it holds for the artist. …

Grant-Writing Workshop

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Pacific Regional Grants Cooperative will be offering a grant-writing workshop on Molokai. The workshop will help interested residents develop quality submittals to respond to NOAA grant solicitations.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center Activity Room, and lunch will be provided.

You will learn how to identify funding opportunities, understand the NOAA grant process, how NOAA evaluates grants and tips and resources to improve your submittals.

Youth in Motion News Release

Youth In Motion will be starting up on Monday, Sept. 9 with a 10-week program of activities. They include American Red Cross swimming and Stand Up Paddling.  The primary age group is 11 to 15 years old but 10 year olds may join if they can show commitment and are willing to listen and learn. Younger children and older youth/adults who choose to come or help for the Stand Up Paddling will be part of the Steward and Shepherd program and can still sign up. An adult must be present for anyone under 10 years old.…

Molokai Ranch to Host Heritage Rodeo

In honor of long-time Molokai paniolo Uncle Jimmy Duvauchelle who retired from ranching earlier this year, Molokai Ranch will host the Molokai Heritage Rodeo. The event, held on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 9 a.m.,  will feature traditional rodeo activities as well as cultural demonstrations, paniolo exhibits, live entertainment, Hawaiian healing and food booths.

The Molokai Ranch Rodeo Arena will also be dedicated and renamed the Uncle Jimmy Duvauchelle Rodeo Arena during the event.

Admission to the event at the Molokai Ranch Rodeo Arena in Maunaloa will be free and open to the public. Rodeo contestants will pay an entry fee and compete for trophy buckles and cash prizes.…

A new store has made its debut at the Molokai Center in Kaunakakai named Molokai Ocean Tours and Outdoor Rentals.  Family- and locally-owned, it is primarily the storefront for the custom-designed tour boat, the Manu Ele`ele, and also cater to visitors’ common outdoor rental needs.
