MHS Hosts First-Ever MIL X-C Championships On Saturday

For the first time ever, Molokai is hosting the Maui Interscholastic League Cross Country Championships to be held this Saturday, Oct. 19 at Ironwoods Golf Course. The Boy’s race begins at 11 a.m. Upon completion of the boy’s race, the girls will toe the line to determine who will be crowned champion.

Molokai High School is hosting this competition for the first time. More than 150 off-island competitors will make the journey to Molokai to race. Members of Molokai High School’s Boy’s X-C team are: Greyson Aldridge, Kealohanui Helm, Luke Kikukawa, Tanner Mosher, Makana Naki, Keaoalono Ross, and Erik Svetin.…

October and November is fledging season for uau kani, when young birds fledge to a life at sea.  Wedge-tailed shearwaters (Puffinus pacificus), or “wedgies,” are part of a mixed flock of seabirds that commercial fishermen rely upon to locate schools of ahi and other marketable fish. Adult birds leave coastal colonies at dawn to feed on fish and return after dark. Behavior while in these colonies is generally nocturnal and throughout the night birds emit weird moans, groans and loud screams, thus they are nicknamed the “moaning bird.”

Seabirds were held in high esteem by ancient Hawaiians.…

Farewell to the Rose of Kalaupapa

She climbed the few steps from the airport’s concrete strip and disappeared into Makani Kai’s plane. The doors closed, the engines roared, and the small plane began to pull away from the terminal building. We watched and waved as it taxied toward the top of the runway, turned, and with an increased roar of the engines, sped down the runway, then lifted gracefully into the Kalaupapa sky. The Rose of Kalaupapa was on her way to her next adventure.

The previous night we had toasted and roasted Sister Rose Annette Ahuna as she prepared to leave us after four years of wonderful ministry here in Kalaupapa.…

Heart of Aloha Church News Release

Heart of Aloha Church, pastored by Cameron and Jacqueline Hiro, is once again opening up their church property to host a Pick a Pumpkin Day on Saturday Oct. 19 from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Headed north, the property is located on the left hand side right off of Kalae Highway, look for signs. The public will “pick and pay” for their favorite pumpkin from the fields after it has been weighed.  Malasadas and other food items will also be offered for sale.

Aunty Jan’s House of Blessing will also be bringing down from Maunaloa some clothing and misc.…

Oceanic Cable Franchise Hearing on Molokai Tuesday

Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s franchises to provide cable service in Maui County expire at the end of 2013. The current franchises were issued by the State of Hawaii more than 15 years ago, and the cable company has filed an application with the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) to continue providing cable service in Maui County for the next 20 years.

DCCA’s new Cable Administrator, Catherine Awakuni, welcomes comments from the communities of Maui County as DCCA reviews Oceanic Time Warner’s application. In the next few weeks, DCCA will hold public hearings in Kahului and Lahaina, and on Molokai and Lanai.…

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved when the first Day of Unity was observed in October of 1981 by the National Coalition against Domestic Violence (NCADV).  The intent was to bring battered women’s advocates together across the nation and end violence against women and their children.

In October of 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed.  That same year the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation was passed by the U.S. Congress.  Such legislation has continued to pass every year with the NCADV providing key leadership in this effort.

Patient Portal Puts Patients at Forefront

The Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC), in an on-going effort to provide patient driven care, has spent the past year investing in the development and implementation of the best technological tools to better service our patients.

Initially, our Electronic Medical Records (EMR) were introduced in mid 2009 providing a quick and efficient way for our doctors to access patient information and coordinate services with other specialists.

With this same focus in mind: to provide quality care based on quality information, MCHC will be introducing the newly developed Patient Portal designed for the patient’s needs first.  This on-line, web-based Patient Portal will be provided to all MCHC patients, at no additional cost, with the goal of providing our patients direct access to all of their very own health information, originally only available inside the clinic.…

Small Business Grant Awards Announced

County of Maui News Release

The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development (OED) and Lokahi Pacific recently announced that a total of $48,303 in Small Business Revitalization grants has been awarded to businesses in Hana, Molokai, and Lanai. These areas have been identified as the areas in Maui County hardest hit in their ability to recover from the economic downturn of the past few years.

The matching grant program requires the business owner to contribute 40 percent to the project, with the grant covering the remaining 60 percent. The grant awards are intended to provide assistance to businesses for projects they did not have funding for, such as purchasing new equipment, renovating, creating or enhancing websites, purchasing marketing materials and other purposes that will help the businesses grow, prosper and sustain jobs.…
