OHA Chair Expected to Make Full Recovery After Hospitalization

Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) Chair Colette Machado, of Molokai, is expected to make a full recovery after suffering a stroke Friday night.

“Mahalo to everyone for their thoughts and prayers,” Machado said, adding, “I feel great.”

Machado is grateful her family and friends who assisted her and called 911 immediately, and for the prayers from her church family. “It is crucial for a people having a stroke to get to the hospital immediately so they can get the right medication. If you think a member of your ‘ohana is suffering from a stroke, call 911 right away.”…

AT&T Expands 4G Network to Molokai

Telecommunications company AT&T has expanded fast 4G LTE speeds to Molokai, where the majority of its mobile Internet traffic now runs over enhanced backhaul – or the cables that connect sites to the overall AT&T network. The expansion provides customers with speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G.

Landfill Opening Delayed Tomorrow and Saturday

Molokai Landfill will delay opening until 9:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 25 and Oct. 26) due to a manpower shortage. The Department of Environmental Management Solid Waste Division apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates the community’s patience and understanding with these delays.

Freediving Safety Training for Molokai

With the goal of reducing breath-holding related injuries and accidents, Freediving Instructors International (FII) will be sponsoring three freediving safety trainings on Molokai Oct. 29-31. These trainings are made available free of charge to any Molokai resident who practices breath-hold activities. The only minimum entry requirement is for students to be at least 12 years and in good medical health.

The Molokai Freediving Safety Training event will be led by 13-time world record freediver Martin Stepanek and his team of FII certified freediving instructors. The instructors are donating their time and instructional expertise to share this education.…

Molokai Lions Club News Release

Two major events have occupied the Molokai Lions Club for the past several months. One has passed and one is fast approaching. The second annual Walk for Sight on Molokai was held on Sept. 28 and the Halloween Costume Contest will be held on Oct. 31st.

The Walk for Sight on Molokai was very successful, netting the club nearly $2500 to keep its vision programs on target. These programs include bringing the team of Maui doctors from Maui Optics to Molokai to help screen preschool and elementary students. The funding will also help the Retina Vision Van project and assist the community with financial aid in vision when necessary.…

Free Breast Cancer Screening Clinic

Na Pu`uwai is hosting a free breast cancer screening clinic on Saturday, Oct. 26. The clinic is sponsored by the Susan G Komen Foundation and will be held at the Na Pu`uwai Office at the Kulana Oiwi Complex from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. No appointment is necessary and walkins are welcome. Na Pu`uwai does ask that those who plan to come to the clinic allow at least half an hour to complete paperwork prior to their examination.

In addition, to the free breast exam, breast cancer educational opportunities are available as well as a lucky number drawing and snacks.…

Molokai’s own Norman DeCosta is celebrating the release of his debut CD, “Pohai Na Mele,” with a night of music at Paddlers’ Inn on Nov. 2.  Initially conceived as an archival assortment of his favorite Hawaiian song for members of his ‘ohana, it quickly developed into a much more meaningful project.

The second meeting regarding the Mana`e Watershed Plan, which calls for extensive fencing of our mountains from Kapualei to Halawa, will be held Friday, Oct. 25. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Kilohana.

The first Mana`e Moku meeting was well-attended, and presentations were made explaining that the government and private landowners have formed a partnership to manage our mountains. A draft plan has been submitted and now community participation and input is needed.

The draft plan calls for the “improvement and protection of the existing watershed” in our mountains, relying on fencing as the primary solution.…

For the first time ever, Molokai is hosting the Maui Interscholastic League Cross Country Championships to be held this Saturday, Oct. 19 at Ironwoods Golf Course. The Boy’s race begins at 11 a.m. Upon completion of the boy’s race, the girls will toe the line to determine who will be crowned champion.

Molokai High School is hosting this competition for the first time. More than 150 off-island competitors will make the journey to Molokai to race. Members of Molokai High School’s Boy’s X-C team are: Greyson Aldridge, Kealohanui Helm, Luke Kikukawa, Tanner Mosher, Makana Naki, Keaoalono Ross, and Erik Svetin.…
