Molokai and Lanai High Athletics Fundraiser a Homerun

Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii News Release

The Downtown Athletic Club Hawaii’s (DACH) second annual benefit fundraiser, “Cheers for Molokai and Lanai High,” held on Jan. 29 outside Murphy’s Bar and Grill, raised $131,500 to benefit student athletes from both schools, and donations are still coming in.

DACH Board of Directors President Keith Amemiya said the outpouring of support from across the state was emotional and overwhelming. Of the proceeds, $85,500 went to Molokai High and $46,000 will benefit Lanai High’s athletic program.

DACH arrived at the financial allocation with the agreement of Molokai High and Lanai High athletic administrators based on the respective numbers of student-athletes served and certain donations that were earmarked by sponsors.…

Have you ever gone to the grocery store and wished that more locally grown food was available? Here at Sust`ainable Molokai, we have, and we know that many of you have as well. Based on the Agricultural Needs Assessment survey that we conducted in 2012, 90 percent of those Molokai residents surveyed said that they prefer to buy local Molokai food products, and 98 percent answered, “Yes, I would eat more local food if it was available.”

In response to that demand, along with the input of our island farmers, which was also collected during our Agricultural Needs Assessment process, we are now working to establish a Molokai Food Hub.…

3 Brushfires Intentionally Set

Three small brushfires blazed in Kalama`ula Mauka last Thursday morning, and are believed to have been intentionally set, according to the Maui Fire officials.

A juvenile male was observed in the area prior to the fires being reported, and was subsequently arrested, said Sergeant James Terry of the Molokai Police Department.

Molokai firefighters from Kaunakakai, Ho`olehua, and Pukoo were dispatched to a brush fire around 10 a.m. When Fire crews arrived on scene, they discovered three separate fires burning, stated Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Two fires were burning at the corner of Likelike Avenue and Pookela Street. These two fires merged in to one fire approximately a quarter acre in size.…

The question is not whether organic produce is safe to eat. The question is why did government waffle in 2002 and allow 245 more chemicals to be used in organic crops, mostly grown as a specialty line by agribusiness corporations.

The question is — as Barbara Kingsolver, author of “Seeing Red,” put it, why are there synthetic ingredients allow in our foods? In 2005, a federal court ruled that organic food could not be made with synthetic ingredients. But agribusiness lobbyists complained, and Congress again waffled and rewrote the law. It’s now legal to use Bisphenol A (BPA), which has been linked to developmental problems in kids, in cans of organic food!…

Financial literacy is all about money and the knowledge of using money wisely. However, “financial literacy” can sound pretty boring. Therefore, we are calling upon all Molokai Middle School students to put their creative thinking caps on and name the middle school financial literacy program.

We are looking for hip, cool, totally rad names that express money. The winner will receive a $50 savings account from the Molokai Community Federal Credit Union. Middle School students can submit their entries to Aunty Kelly Kaawa-Richardson on campus.

Come learn from conservation exhibits that bring awareness to our natural resources and what environmental organizations, agencies and local groups are doing to preserve it. Descendants of Original Kalama`ula Homesteaders Sought

The State of Hawaii Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) is seeking descendants still residing on Molokai of the 22 native Hawaiians allocated homestead lots and the 20 who were allocated residential lots at Kalaniana`ole Settlement, Kalama`ula, from Sept. 16, 1921, through Nov. 13, 1923.
In commemoration of the 90th anniversary of the Kalanana`ole Settlement at Kalama`ula and the original 42 Hawaiian homesteaders, DHHL is planning on a celebration at Kalaniana`ole Hall, Kalama`ula following the Hawaiian Homes Commission meeting at the DHHL offices at Kulana `Oiwi on April 21, where the families of the original homesteaders will be recognized.…

Lanikeha Kitchen Changes Hands

After providing commercial kitchen space at the Lanikeha Center for more than a dozen years, the Molokai Community Service Council (MCSC) has turned the kitchen back over to Hawaiian Homes (DHHL). On Feb. 27, DHHL advised MCSC that they plan to transfer the kitchen license to the Homestead Farmers Alliance. The Hawaiian Homes Commission will be asked to approve this transfer at their April 21 meeting here on Molokai.

The kitchen began when community members decided to include it as a project in the 1998 federal Enterprise Community (EC) competition. After Molokai won an EC award, county, state, and federal agencies provided funding to help DHHL establish a kitchen in the newly-planned Lanikeha Center.…
