The Molokai Seed Savers, a group of residents invested in saving and sharing seed varieties, meet regularly and would like to invite others to come and share ideas, seeds, fun and aloha. The Green Guerillas are seeds savers over age 65. Our upcoming meets are listed below. Green Guerillas and the public are welcome.

Closing Time for General Store

For three years, Molokai General Store has been a one-stop shop for just about anything a customer might need. However, if you take a drive down Ala Malama Street, you can’t miss the large, neon-colored closing sales signs plastered across the storefront. Come late August, business at the general store will close for good.

“We thank the Molokai community for their support of our business,” said CEO and Chairman David Mikami.

From office supplies and home goods to linens, fishing supplies and toys, the old-style plantation store offered a wide range of essentials. But after years in business, the general store will close its doors on August 30, Mikami announced last week.…

Recent Molokai resident Kirby Kester is the new president of the Hawaii Crop Improvement Association (HCIA), as well as Dow AgroSciences’ Hawaii R&D Leader.

With nearly 20 years’ experience in the seed industry on Kauai, Kester now resides on Molokai and serves as site Leader for Dow AgroSciences’ R&D Station on Molokai, as well as provides oversight for Kauai’s Seeds and Traits R&D program.

Kirby holds a M.S. of Agriculture degree from Iowa State University and a B.S. in Agronomy from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.  He has been a member of HCIA since 1995, and will serve a two-year term as president.…

Businessman David Mikami has announced the closing of Molokai General Store (301 Ala Malama Street) in Kaunakakai. The last day of business will be Saturday, August 30.

The clearance sale began Wednesday, July 9 at 9 a.m. with the entire inventory at 20 percent off as well as select items at higher discounts. Everything must go!

“We thank the Molokai community for their support of our business,” said Mikami. Molokai General Store is Molokai’s version of the old-style plantation store. The store currently sells a variety of items, including office supplies, linens, containers, fishing supplies, sporting goods, party supplies, appliances, jewelry, snacks, cleaning supplies, tools, books, clothing and toys.…

Hui Malama Makanalua News Release

This year, June 30 marks the 45th anniversary of the end of the isolation of Hansen’s disease (leprosy) patients at the Makanalua peninsula (commonly known as Kalaupapa). In an effort to observe this anniversary and honor those who were subject to the policy, local non-profit Hui Malama Makanalua will be placing lei at every known burial site on the peninsula with their project named Lei Hali‘a O Kalaupapa (lei in remembrance of Kalaupapa), with the assistance of Kalaupapa National Park personnel.

Community members will be coming together to make and/or donate lei for the June 30th ceremony in Kalaupapa at these two locations:

Learn How to Be Kind to Animals at Molokai Library

The Molokai Humane Society (MHS) will present “Be Kind to Animals,” a free informational program, at Molokai Public Library on Monday, June 30 at 10 a.m. in the Reading Section.

Dr. Stewart Morgan, Molokai’s resident veterinarian, will discuss the benefits of taking care of a well-behaved pet.  Lyndon Dela Cruz, MHS President, will share information about an assortment of pets that will accompany him to the Library.

This program is suitable for all ages and will include a question-and-answer session.  Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.…

`Ohana by Hawaiian Adds Maui and Oahu Flights

After three months of operations on Molokai, `Ohana by Hawaiian is expanding its flights from Molokai to include a daily flight to Maui and a fourth flight to Honolulu this summer.

Beginning July 8, `Ohana will offer a round trip flight to Kahului, scheduled to depart from Molokai to Maui at 8:33 a.m., and returning from Maui to Molokai at 4:41 p.m. The airline is also adding an additional round trip to Honolulu for the summer period only. Currently operating three flights daily since its launch of Molokai and Lanai services in March, `Ohana will add a flight departing Honolulu for Molokai at 7:45 a.m.,…

OHA Trustees to Hold Meetings On Molokai

Native Hawaiians on Molokai will get an opportunity to provide feedback to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) at a community forum as well as a regular meeting scheduled by the Board of Trustees.

The community meeting is designed for OHA officials to listen to concerns and highlight efforts to improve conditions within Hawaiian communities. Both meetings are open to the public. Here are the specifics:

Please join Sust`ainable Molokai on May 31 for our next community workday. Community workday is a chance for any interested community members to come out to our high school permaculture farm to put in a few hours of educational, rewarding labor, followed by a potluck lunch for all.

We try to prepare our meals around what is growing in the garden, and this next community workday will be a very special opportunity. We are bringing our Forno Bravo wood firing pizza oven to the permaculture site, and after work we will have a make-your-own pizza party. Bring whatever ingredients you wish to put on your pizza, we’ll be supplying the dough, and also feel free to pick fresh vegetables from our garden sites.…

 Molokai Resident Named ‘Outstanding Older American’

County of Maui News Release

Eighty-three-year-old Molokai volunteer Kanee Wright was named one of two winners of the Maui County Office on Aging Outstanding Older American Awards. Wright and Maui’s 84-year-old Fred Ruge were honored at the 46th annual awards ceremony on May 6 at the Maui Beach Hotel. The two were chosen out of 10 nominees.

Wright is a volunteer at Hale Maha`olu’s Home Pumehana site in Kaunakakai, Molokai. She loves to help and lives up to her middle name of “Happy,” bringing a smile with her everywhere she goes. She loves to keep busy by cleaning Home Pumehana’s windows, screens, tables and chairs, as well as running errands for the kitchen, office and maintenance shop, and delivering parcels when she is not on the road delivering nutritious meals to the Friendly Isle’s frail, homebound seniors.…
