For the last decade, The Molokai Dispatch has fostered a thriving internship program that allows young journalists from around the country the opportunity to bring their talent to Molokai, work hands-on in a small island community, and in turn, provide the island with high quality reporting. As we prepare to celebrate our 30th anniversary, The Molokai Dispatch is also preparing to shift our model from interns to home-grown community reporters.…

Maui County News Release

Now that the 2015 Pacific Hurricane Season has officially kicked off with the formation of Tropical Storm Andres off the Coast of Mexico last week, Maui County residents are urged to sign up for “Maka`ala,” the Maui County Civil Defense’s new Emergency Alert System.

We need to be prepared for this storm and the several other storm systems that are predicted to form this year.

“Maka`ala translated from Hawaiian means to be alert, aware and vigilant and we want residents to be just that,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa. “We have had a number of tropical storms, hurricanes, tsunamis and other emergency events hit Maui County in recent years, and Maka`ala notifications will allow people to watch out for the next emergency event and hopefully enable them to stay out of harm’s way.”…

Molokai Humane Society News Release

The Molokai Humane Society is happy to announce that we have a new veterinarian.  Over the last month and a half, some of you may have been fortunate enough to have met Dr. Susan Baillie as she has gotten a feel for our little clinic and the island of Molokai.  We are excited to add such a great asset to our team!

Dr. Baillie is originally from a small farming community in South Africa, and later moved to California with her family.  She was a preschool teacher for eight years, until she discovered her passion for animals, and graduated from University of California-Davis with a degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2005. …

The Molokai Veterans Caring for Veterans (MVCV) center has finally got its Certificate of Occupancy, and will be having a general membership meeting on Friday, April 24 at 10 a.m. at our new veteran center going down to the Kaunakakai pier.

We will be discussing our Veteran Center’s dedication/opening and looking for watch commanders at our center for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Our secretary, Allen Diorec, will be taking reservations for anyone interested in using our certified kitchen.  For more information, call our center at 553-8387.

Shriners Hospitals Brings Services to Molokai on Tuesday

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Honolulu will be holding an outreach clinic for prospective and current orthopaedic patients on Molokai. Patients will be seen by pediatric orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Jonathan Pellett, who is the 2014 Healthcare Association of Hawaii Physician of the Year. The clinic will be held on Tuesday, April 21 at Molokai Public Health Nursing Office in Kaunakakai from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The Shriners Hospital team conducts clinics on Molokai twice a year. Children up to the age of 18 are eligible for care at Shriners Hospitals for Children if the physician determines that a child can benefit from care at the hospital. …

Molokai will get a musical treat on March 30. The Spring Wind Quintet, recognized as one of the country’s leading wind quintets, will be playing a concert at Kaunakakai Elementary School Cafeteria at 6 p.m.

The Spring Wind Quintet has been a major force in the development of chamber music in Hawaii, and many new works have been composed and arranged especially for the group. The quintet has an extensive and varied repertoire earning several national grants and offers educational programs for all ages.

Grand Re-Opening at Mitchell Pau`ole Center Tuesday

A blessing and grand re-opening of the Mitchell Pau`ole Center will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 6 in Kaunakakai, the County Department of Parks and Recreation announced. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the facility, located at 90 Ainoa Street.

The Mitchell Pau`ole Center was closed for improvements earlier this year, to bring the facility into compliance with the 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible design, with changes including ADA parking and access to center, signage, restrooms, drinking fountain, door hardware, counter and accessible sidewalks and seating by bleachers.

The facility also underwent an expansion, building repairs and upgrades, including a new 2,826 sq.…
