New U.S. Citizen

Mike Prewitt arrived on Molokai in 2001 at the age of 62 as a citizen of the United Kingdom. Last month, he became a U.S. citizen.

“At that time [2001], I knew that Molokai was where I wanted to live,” he said, saying for the next nine years, he stayed on a six-month Visa that required him to return to the UK twice a year to renew. In 2013, I got married to my wonderful wife Maria Watanabe. After a few years I was determined to become an American citizen as I have always admired the American way of life.…

Uechi Promoted to Leadership at Maui News

Former Molokai Dispatch reporter Colleen Uechi has been named to the top editorial leadership role at The Maui News. Uechi began her journalism career as an intern with The Molokai Dispatch in 2014, and worked on staff until the end of 2015, when she joined The Maui News team as a reporter. She was promoted to assistant city editor last year. She now replaces Lee Imada as managing editor, who worked at the publication for 40 years.

Originally from Oahu, Uechi is originally from Oahu and graduated from Hawaiian Mission Academy in Honolulu. She studied intercultural communications and Spanish at Pacific Union College in California and after her 2013 graduation, taught English in Kazakhstan for five months.…

Growing up on the Mississippi coast, the sea and adventure were always a part of Sister Ardis Kremers’ life. As the daughter of an engineer running a boat building business, being outdoors was natural. She loved to sail and experience life. With her love for God and spirit of adventure, she discovered the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America that we know as Maryknoll. She would have to wait a year before she could enter into religious life. She was invited to Maryknoll, New York to begin life as a Maryknoll Sister at the tender age of 19 years old.…

Crivello Runs for Molokai Councilmember

Stacy Helm Crivello announced last week that she has filed to run for the Molokai residency seat on the Maui County Council. Crivello previously held the seat from 2013-2018.

“Maui County needs steady leadership to get us through these tough times,” Crivello said. “We must work decisively to not only address the health and economic crisis in the short term, but to support a resilient economy in the long term.”

In addition to her experience on the Maui County Council, Crivello has accumulated a wealth of knowledge through her many roles serving the community. She was a founding member of the Molokai Community Health Center and the Molokai Land Trust, Chair of the Maui County Fire and Public Safety Commission, and helped administer Molokai’s USDA Enterprise Community Grant, to name a few.…

On May 19, Ethel Honda celebrated her 100th birthday with a small gathering and with family via zoom. Ethel moved to Molokai from Oahu 13 years ago to live with her daughter and son-in-law Jenni and Allen Ashitomi. She’s had many adventures working from the age of 14 at Libby’s and CPC Cannery, sewing and working as a sales person at various stores at Waikiki and King Street, nanny and babysitting jobs, and finally working at her late husband’s restaurant; Honda Delicatessen in Liliha. What a life and what a blessing to have “Obachan” here with us on Molokai!…

MFD Announces Promotions

Fire Chief David Thyne and the rest of the Maui Fire Department are proud to announce the following promotions: Jorgen Ka’ohele Busby, Jeremy Javier, Maroe Smith, Modesto Jacinto Jr, Michael Mullalley, Jeffrey Robson and Michael Howe have all been promoted to Fire Captain. Michael Gormley has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
Jorgen Ka’ohele Busby joined the Maui Fire Department in 1999. He has worked as a Fire Fighter I in Ho’olehua, Molokai. Following his promotion to Fire Fighter III in 2014, he worked out of the stations in Kaunakakai and Ho’olehua. With his promotion to Captain, Busby will return to Ho’olehua.…

All public library locations in Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS), including the Molokai Public Library and bookmobile services, will be closed until April 7. Please know that we are working diligently to navigate the ongoing changes in guidance and requirements from local, state, and federal authorities during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Given the most recent information, as of March 19, all book drops will be closed. We are asking everyone to hold on to our library materials until we open again.

Hawaiian Electric Suspends Disconnections

Hawaiian Electric will suspend service disconnections for 30 days so customers who are financially challenged by the coronavirus pandemic don’t have to worry about losing electric service.
Service disconnections of both residential and commercial customers will be suspended through at least April 17. Depending on the situation at that time, the special assistance period may be extended.
Customers facing financial hardship are urged to call customer service so payment options and schedules can be arranged to help keep payments manageable. While customers will still be responsible for paying their electric bills, payment schedules and other options can help ease the financial challenges for those most affected by the COVID-19 situation.…
