Molokai residents have been complaining for years about the noise caused by military training flights over the island, particularly from Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, which can adjust their rotors to fly like either a helicopter and fixed-wing plane. Now, with more people staying at home during the pandemic, complaints are coming in from around the state, Honolulu Civil Beat reported. The Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC) has opened up a comment questionnaire available for Hawaii residents to air their grievances about military aircraft noise as part of an initiative to address high-disturbance areas. 12 Positive Cases in Molokai Cluster So Far

There are 12 confirmed active COVID-19 cases on island as of May 14. The cluster originated from Maui construction contractors who were working in a non-clinical, closed area of Molokai General Hospital and tested positive after their arrival, while working alongside Molokai workers. Here’s what we know so far.

Kupu, Hawaii’s leading conservation and youth education nonprofit organization, announced that applications are now open for this summer’s Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps (HYCC). This seven-week opportunity runs from June 7 – July 23 providing young adults typically between the ages of 17-22 with meaningful field service experience into the world of conservation while giving back to the community. 4 Molokai Residents Join Fire Dept.

Last month, the Department of Fire and Public Safety celebrated the graduation of its 36th Firefighter Recruit Class in Wailuku. The 19 firefighter recruits graduated from the Maui Fire Department’s 25 week Recruit Training Program, and four of them are from Molokai. The program is designed to train and evaluate fire recruits on the many skills and disciplines necessary to serve the public as a firefighter.

Fifteen firefighters will be joining the ranks with the Maui Fire Department and will be assigned to Maui County fire stations on Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. New U.S. Citizen

Mike Prewitt arrived on Molokai in 2001 at the age of 62 as a citizen of the United Kingdom. Last month, he became a U.S. citizen.

“At that time [2001], I knew that Molokai was where I wanted to live,” he said, saying for the next nine years, he stayed on a six-month Visa that required him to return to the UK twice a year to renew. In 2013, I got married to my wonderful wife Maria Watanabe. After a few years I was determined to become an American citizen as I have always admired the American way of life.…

Uechi Promoted to Leadership at Maui News

Former Molokai Dispatch reporter Colleen Uechi has been named to the top editorial leadership role at The Maui News. Uechi began her journalism career as an intern with The Molokai Dispatch in 2014, and worked on staff until the end of 2015, when she joined The Maui News team as a reporter. She was promoted to assistant city editor last year. She now replaces Lee Imada as managing editor, who worked at the publication for 40 years.

Originally from Oahu, Uechi is originally from Oahu and graduated from Hawaiian Mission Academy in Honolulu. She studied intercultural communications and Spanish at Pacific Union College in California and after her 2013 graduation, taught English in Kazakhstan for five months.…

As the daughter of an engineer running a boat building business, being outdoors was natural. She loved to sail and experience life. With her love for God and spirit of adventure, she discovered the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America that we know as Maryknoll. She would have to wait a year before she could enter into religious life. She was invited to Maryknoll, New York to begin life as a Maryknoll Sister at the tender age of 19 years old.…
